    Chapter 1

    Rodney marries Shanty despite…

Rodney grew up looking up to his father as his only role model. His old man did not seem to communicate much with him and he became somewhat independent. Being the eldest child was a little bit tough on him. His father owned a prosperous general dealer store and butchery. He seemed to have acute business acumen.

Rodney was the eldest son with three siblings. He imagined that he would have his own business when he grew up, but not necessarily the same type of business. Dealing directly with people can be challenging yet some people love messing with other people’s minds.

He spent most of his free time behind the counter, serving customers making his father proud. Some years later, he realised that something was wrong with the setup. Less people were coming to the shop. He decided then that he did not want that type of business. He did not want to a retailer but would rather be in the wholesale business.

His parents began showing signs of stress as they began quarrelling about matters he could not understand. His father sold the business and he left soon after he got married to Shanty. The wedding was a huge affair with most of Rodney’s friends attending. Fortunately, the family had enough support structures covering up for the absence of his father.

By then Rodney was working for an engineering company. He had a good relationship with his boss. His boss treated him like a son he did not have. However, Rodney’s mind was still under the influence of the apartheid policies of the previous government. He was yet to see any meaningful changes brought in by the new black government.

It took a while for him to accept that his boss was a mere mortal just as he was. Sometimes the race thing was baffling as a person but he accepted the law dividing the citizens, placing people into little boxes suffocating their brains. Even the government then was too arrogant thinking they had a solution.

The colour of his skin did not qualify him as a superior something. The notion of a white skin being the master of all became invalid. He would sometimes tell Rodney about his domestic problems. Rodney would also tell him about his life with Shanty. He realised that, domestic problems affected other race groups as well irrespective of social status.

He went to stay by his uncle after he realised that the tension in his home was becoming unbearable by the day. He had a feeling that his mother did not care much for him. This feeling gored his inner being. She always made fun of him thus denting his fragile ego.

His siblings were feeling sorry for him, as he was the only member of the family that could not sing a correct note. His voice box had a problem. Everyone else in the family had superb singing voices. Even his schoolteacher was aware that his voice was false. Fortunately, he was not the only one in his class with a faulty voice.

He probably felt that he did not belong and he probably felt unworthy to be around people that did not want to accept his flaws. Every child or grown up needs to feel valued otherwise some might seek validation outside the family structures. Every human being needs to belong for peace of mind and self-esteem.

At that juncture of his life, his uncle’s wife seemed to understand and accept him as he was. He was therefore comfortable to be in her presence and he began to regard her as his second mother.

He met Shanty while he was living by his uncle. He fell in love with her but her family did not approve of the relationship. She was still attending high school then. Despite all the commotion, they managed to steal romantic moments as most teenagers did.

One day she calmly told him that she was pregnant. The news were a shocker, he managed to remain cool though blinded by that thing called love. Looking at her face, he saw nothing resembling guilt or any other emotion. He did not make a fuss about her pregnancy even though he had doubts.

She was therefore unable to complete her college education. Everyone in both families would blame Rodney for disrupting her education. He was thinking that she could go back to school, but she did not seem interested. She had no ambition to do better in life. Apparently getting married would solve everything.

Everyone seemed to be in a hurry to find a husband and a job. Then a bunch of kids would follow. They found out later that maintaining kids was not cheap. His dreams began to disintegrate sending his confidence into the black hole. He became a casual drinker starting with beers and wines.

He was not mentally ready to be a father at his age of twenty-one. His mother was furious with him. She thought that he was still immature to have a wife. His father stood by him citing that he already had a responsibility towards the unborn child.

Even Shanty was too young to become a wife. He married her soon after he heard the pregnancy announcement. When their first child was born, he realised that he was born a month too soon. Red flags showed up in his mind warning him that something was wrong.

However, a few years down the line, his mother mentioned something that disturbed his mental health. She mentioned the possibility of Shanty’s half-brother being the father of her eldest son. She could never explain how she came to that conclusion. Rodney’s younger sister heard that and a chain reaction began filtering the minds of every member of the family.

It is questionable if Shanty knew that her in-laws were looking at her from a different perspective all rose-coloured glasses were off. Yet none could show proof of the allegation since none knew anything about DNA testing. Prior to that information becoming public news, she was the darling of the family.

Maybe she had no idea that most members of Rodney’s family were watching her. Her half-brother usually came to visit not knowing that everyone thought little of him. The boy looked so much like him and Shanty decided to take the boy to a boarding school.

The other three kids remained with Rodney’s mother. No one confronted her nor hinted anything negative about her son. Sometimes people may chose to live a lie rather face the truth.

His mind was busy creating excuses for Shanty but his subconscious recorded his doubts. He never mentioned that to anyone. His friends were telling him of the things she was doing, he brushed all that aside as if she was not doing anything wrong. She seemed to be having an affair with a married man. In retaliation, butter for fat, Rodney began chasing skirts out there, but two wrongs can never make it right

He had a problem with his manhood though. He was never able to satisfy any of those girls and soon they spread the rumour about his handicap. Yet he did not stop because he thought that with more practice he might be able to perform better. Instead, his libido seemed to deteriorate. He was too young to understand the responsibilities of being a husband and a father.

Most young women gave him the attention he needed to make him feel loved. Most of the girls thought that he was a handsome young man. However, all that attention misled him into thinking that he could have all of the girls at the same time. Love was never an ingredient in his relationships.

He was simply proud to have a bevy of beautiful young girls around him. Even some of his friends began to envy him. None of them knew that he was taking chances with the girls.

Rodney was a hard working type of person. He never gave up on anything. Maybe that was why he would not ditch Shanty because of her shenanigans. He was patient enough to plod along and get satisfactory results. His boss tried on many occasions to encourage him to work faster but failed.

He knew though that at the end of the day, Rodney’s work was without doubt excellent. He did not do things to prove anything to anyone or to show off. The people around him were moving ahead rather too fast for him.

Some of them tired too soon before seeing sight of their intended goals. He came along plodding behind and picking up the pieces. He was knowingly raising another man’s child as his own. He was trying to do the right thing. He always applied his mind to whatever task he had to tackle. Even as a small boy, he was always tinkering with something. His hands were seldom idle.

His brain was always searching for something to do. He would always find or see something that someone did not do right. He would either silently criticize the result of the sloppy work or try to fix it. In his mind, everything had to be at least 99% right. Shanty began calling him Mr. Perfect. In reality that is almost difficult to achieve but not impossible.

He knew that creation is perfect. The laws of nature are faultless and steadfast. The laws, which govern human nature, can never change any natural law or perform any modification exercise to suit individual desires. Even the creator himself does not temper with any of the established laws. Nothing ever behaves out of character.

If you throw a boomerang, it will always come back to the source. It will not suddenly change course and fly somewhere else. It will always come back to the thrower because of its design.

The human body functions precisely according to its design. Every cell has a duty to perform. Every organ in a human body performs its duty without fail unless there are foreign entities, which may cause disruption by contaminating the human cells.

Therefore, whoever or whatever started the cycle of existence has to be perfect and well balanced. However, everything has an opposite side. Some people may remain in the realm of negativity while others may choose to be positive. If Satan is a bad influence then God is a good influence.

Even so, everything originates from the same source. In reality there is no good and bad. The idea of things being good or bad is a mere opinion of individuals. God proclaimed everything he created to be good as translated by the human mind for human comprehension. However, Satan knows that some of the things could have a devastating effect on human beings. All the herbs used by indigenous people to heal or create havoc grow freely in the wilderness.

Yet medical science uses the same herbs to cure diseases and produce antidotes e.g. snake bites, but never do harm to human life. At the same time, some people produce harmful drugs capable of destroying the community fabric.

Thus, we find some people abusing certain things for his or her temporary pleasure. Every human being has both good and bad elements in his or her configuration. Some people might highlight negative thoughts and act upon those thoughts.

Rodney chose to evaluate life’s events from a positive point of view. Thus, he enjoyed the lightness of being positive about things. He tackled negative emotions with acceptance as part of living. Shanty thought that he was being unrealistic, living in a fantasy world.

Sure, no one is perfect, a figure of speech used by most people to justify mistakes. He was no exception in any manner. He felt anger and joy and all other emotions felt by normal human beings. However, he reacted differently to these passing emotions just as he would watch dancing clouds in the sky changing formations.

Rejection of such negative thoughts may cause emotional upheaval and pain. His ego seldom controlled his decisions. However, sometimes his ego would throw him off balance. The recovery period would sometimes take much too long for peace of mind.

Then he would do regrettable things and suffer the consequences. He knew that he was responsible for his actions and that no one else could do things as he could. The other person might be better or worse but never the same.

Shanty believed in an eye for an eye ideology. She believed in revenge thus she carried grudges along with her. Her burden would cause her to nurture almost all negative feelings.

She would then resort to using stimulants such as liquor or drugs. Even sex was a useful gateway of channelling her energy. She was seldom happy and if she struck a happiness note, it would not last long before she became bored and irritable.

The heaviness of being selfish caused her pain and agony. She learned early in her life how to manoeuvre along the tricky by-ways and highways of life. She learned how to survive the harshness of life. Living with her sister was another life lesson because of her husband. He believed in traditional values of his ancestors.

She was only eighteen years old when she fell pregnant. She could not go on studying because she was not very bright in the classroom. She was obviously good at something; no one is useless or hopeless.

In the end, she learned that men could only value a woman if she was able to give of herself without reservations. That theory can only be effective if both parties are willing to play the game on equal terms.

She could not understand why Rodney never regarded the hardships of life as problems. She resented his attitude and she would sometimes mock him by using vulgar words. She would say something nasty about his dick.

Human beings have by decree, a vast field of choices. The choices we make can either bring harmony in our lives or may cause disruption and distort our judgment of events and of other people. Sometimes people behave and do things, which are detrimental to their own mental health.

Society expects us to behave in a certain manner. If someone goes against such norms, such a person can become a nuisance to society. People might shun such people and too many negative reactions might follow. The state of mind determines how we react thereby revealing our basic character. However, sometimes we react spontaneously according to our individual karmas.

According to the decisions we make, like or dislike will affect our emotions. We therefore either like or dislike certain people or objects. On a higher level, like can become love and dislike can become hatred.

Creation is a result of love. Love binds everything together. People gravitate towards each other drawn together by the love emotion. Hatred is disruptive and causes chaos in people’s emotions.

Human beings have a strong natural love emotion. This emanates from the source of creation. Loving each other is a natural state of every human being. However, some of us live in an unnatural sphere of existence under the influence of the devil.

We no longer live in the Garden of Eden where love of everything was abundant. Satan introduced doubt and disobedience in our minds and since then we became outcasts. He brought about the downfall of man by sweet-talking Eve into breaking the law.

She tasted of the apple before Adam did. There were no sexual activities until they were out of the Garden of Eden. Some may have a different view on that issue. Shanty was one of the people that thought Adam and Eve were sexually active in the Garden of Eden.

We can no longer love sincerely, thus, human love will always fluctuate according to external influences. Any form of love that is justifiable lacks something. Some of us rely on nature but others rely on his or her decisions and abilities for survival.

In any situation, the decisions we make create a certain foundation for continuation or disruption. Whether it is a work environment or in a relationship, we need to make appropriate decisions for continuation or for termination.

Most of the time, we make decisions based on our personal interests. Such decisions lack inclusion of others around us. Alienation is a painful experience. When Christ cried out on the cross, asking God why he forsook him, he was surely feeling alienated from the heavens. That in itself is an indication of the intensity of his physical pain.

Christians believe that Christ was the most spiritually enlightened being ever to set foot on this earth. Non-Christians think differently. To them, Christ was just another prophet that visited this earth.

Maybe there is merit in their deductions but who are we to judge. Shanty had no religious thoughts or intentions. Rodney was following his mother’s example. She was a devout Christian.

Human beings do not possess such magnificent spiritual power as Christ displayed, thus our pain of alienation would be much greater. Some people might interpret alienation as rejection. None can appreciate rejection of any calibre.

Yet some people do not accept other race groups as human beings coming from the same source. Shanty always thought of Rodney as inferior to her because she was coloured. Her grandfather was a white man from somewhere in Europe.

People belonging to certain ethnic groupings regard themselves as privileged. Such false ideologies can cause friction and even wars. Hitler wanted to create a pure German race yet he had non-German ancestors in his family tree.

Chaka, the Zulu tyrant, had the same ideologies. All his warriors were strong and tall. Any short man was not eligible to be a warrior. They probably raped the women of the tribes they conquered. None has pure uncontaminated blood in his or her system, be it a white person or a black person.

Since everything begins in the mind, some people may allow unhealthy thoughts to grow abundantly. The thoughts would then become words. People may then speak to others and action would result from spoken words. The actions might become habits, which might be difficult to control.

Once the habits are established, they then form the character of the individual. Others might refrain from entertaining such thoughts. Rodney and his wife filled their minds with thoughts of fornication. Human beings have a strong inclination to copulate.

Maybe the animal brain, which is still evolving into a new brain, has a strong grip on human behaviour. They could not stick to each other without including other people in the mixture. That philosophy kept them together ever since they chose to legalise their relationship,

The sexual awareness became dominant after the fall of man in the Garden of Eden. God instructed Adam to know Eve and they had two sons. There were no marriage licenses then. Therefore, Rodney and Shanty had every right to desire each other. Nothing else mattered more to them. Then they faced life’s challenges and soon they veered off the track.

The colour of the skin did not make any difference. Shanty had a light complexion with silky long hair. Rodney was a typical black man. He preferred women with light complexion. He once had a fling with a Caucasian woman.

They both thought that every other living human being would have the same thoughts and desires continuously. Whenever they saw someone of the opposite sex, his or her imaginations would begin playing flicks in their heads.

Rodney was in a sense, beyond redemption because he could not hide his lust. He never wore jockeys because jockeys can be restrictive; he preferred boxer shorts to allow freedom of movement.

Shanty could, most of the time keep a low profile. However, when she was in her house, she would remove her underwear. Occasionally, she would even forget to wear her underwear. The habit began to define her character.

Rodney and Shanty had four children together but he had a question mark about their firstborn child. He never questioned his wife about the boy. He thought that it would be unfair on the child.

He always treated all children alike. However, as the children became teenagers, the boy began showing signs of rejection. Rodney had no idea how and why he gained the information about his real father. Perhaps someone told him about his biological father. He did not even want to use Rodney’s surname anymore.

That was the beginning of cracks in his relationship with his wife. The boy began defying Rodney openly using uncouth language. The family began to suffer the consequences as Shanty became more protective of the boy. Rodney stopped bothering him for anything.

Rodney was by then owning a mini bus and he was ferrying people to and from work. He met a girl on one of those trips. She was by no means beautiful but she was attractive. He kept on looking at her thighs as she was sitting on the front seat. He felt his ding-dong shifting position and he tensed up a little.

She was the last passenger in his mini-bus. He did not say much to her but his ding-dong was revolting. Neither of them felt the need to say much after formally stating their names. The girl’s name was Chantelle. She spoke fluent Afrikaans. Rodney could understand Afrikaans but he responded in English.

She spoke with a hoarse voice as she told him that she was living by herself. Her husband left her for another woman and she instituted divorce proceedings. She seemed to be a free soul. She was in a perfect space for him to explore.

He knew of rumours about coloured women being extremely provocative. Maybe that was why he married Shanty. She was a living evidence of temptation. After Adam tasted of the apple, he saw Eve in her full natural regalia. He knew instantly that his dick had to penetrate her. Rodney was in that state of mind waiting for permission to penetrate her.

Nothing about her suggested sadness or any other negative emotion. She became aware of his erection and she became restless. Her mind began to issue instructions. She felt the heat between her thighs become intense.

He did not know what happened to her skirt but it seemed to shrink to incredible proportions. He did not question her motives. He watched her shift her torso on the car seat. She moved closer to him.

He saw her open inviting thighs. His curious hand ventured to touch her bare thigh. She did not complain as he expected her to do. He actually thought that she was smiling. He shifted his hand towards her inner thigh. Those thighs felt hot.

His finger became naughty as it began to explore. He moved the piece of cloth aside and he felt her pubic hair. Then he found her clit and touched it lightly. She seemed to move her torso forward as he slid his long thick finger into the hole.

Do not go too deep with that finger.

He saw her hand move over his thigh towards his hard ding-dong. He felt her soft touch and he grimaced. He had no idea how she managed to expose the ever-hardening tool. He thought that it could be interesting to share a few private moments with her. Her slim fingers felt warm and he loved her touch. He wanted to stop his mini-bus but he could not.

She said, I like this thing.

    Do you want it now?

Not now but some other day, maybe tomorrow.

    Where will I find you?

You can come to my house or pick me up at the same place where you found me standing.

He withdrew his finger from her as she gave him directions to her home. Her hand was still holding his tool and massaging it. He thought that he was going to explode right there in his mini-bus.

She stopped massaging him but she squeezed the thing. When they arrived at her home, she pulled her skirt to its original size. He stopped the vehicle and forced his tool back into his pants.

She said, I will probably see you tomorrow.

I hope to see you soon.

She then alighted and walked into her yard. He looked at her legs and he thought that she had sexy legs. He drove off to his home. As he drove into his yard, he saw his neighbour jumping the boundary fence. He parked his car and he found his wife in the lounge stark naked. He was certain that she just had sex with his neighbour. None of them said anything.

His nostrils picked up the faint fishy smell in the room. He always knew that she was not faithful but that night he realized that she was fooling around with their neighbour. She confirmed his suspicion by refusing him entry that night. Such is life, he thought and he fell asleep without complaining.

He woke up early as usual and prepared himself for work. His wife also got out of bed. He watched her luscious body as she went to the kitchen. She came back with a glassful of water. She swallowed her contraceptive tablet and she drank the water in the glass.

She lay on the bed with her thighs wide open. He was still in his shorts and his manhood could not resist the temptation. It sprung out of the short pyjama pants and followed the faint scent of his wife. He removed his pants
