Fannie stood and peered into the cubicle. It was empty again. Scavengers had already been rummaging. Not that Lucy had left anything. Yet, Fannie wanted to find a small token or something.
She hadn’t known Lucy long. Lucy breezed in and out so fast heads turned. Well, Lucy made heads turn. She was one of those girls. Where, Fannah Housenhouser was not one of those girls. She never desired to be one of those girls either. Yet, in the short time she’d known Lucy, Fannie had started to evaluate her own life and found it lacking.
Disappointed, Fannie returned to her own cubicle empty handed and got back to working on her sales projections. She was good at it, but she had to admit it wasn’t as interesting as she’d thought it would be. Nothing about her life was. Lately, these thoughts played through her mind like background static noise, irritating her.
At promptly five o’clock, Fannie closed her files and rolled her chair back. She cleared her desk and unlocked the cabinet drawer where she kept her purse. She grabbed it, took one more look to double-check that things were in order and headed out.
