Betraying the Queen

Loki descended the stairwell silently, winding down the spiral steps like a wraith. He did not want anyone to discover he was there to spy on the Billow Maidens while they were making ale for the Feast of Bilröst. Queen Ràn was up to something, Loki thought, and what better way to find out what she was plotting than to eavesdrop on her daughters?

As he slid along the sandstone wall, humidity clung to his skin, a sweet odor filled his nostrils. Suddenly, a blissful sound echoed throughout the chamber below—laughter. The maidens were closer than what he had expected. Loki smiled, watching firelight dance along the narrow corridor. Cinders popped and cracked loudly. He rounded the path and ducked in the shadows.

This should do it, Blòdha said as she traipsed across the cavern with a large pitcher of honey perched on her shoulder. She poured it into the bubbling caldron and watched the brew splatter against the iron.

How much more do we need? Hevring asked.

Blòdha wiped the sweat from her brow and looked up at the ceiling. We have made ten caldrons so far. I think another five will do.

Another five? Bara whined.

The festivities will begin any time now, and that does not leave much time to prepare, Blòdha explained, The gods like their ale sweet and frothy.

They will be drunk before sunset, Bara giggled.

And bragging about their adventures, Duva added.

Tomorrow will be a day to remember, Blòdha went on, It will be a celebration that will change the course of time.

I do not feel like listening to this, Unn mumbled.

Blòdha threw another log on the fire and shot her a scathing look. Apparently, no one has bothered to tell you anything.

Oh, Blòdha, I am sure that you will enlighten all of us, Unn replied, rolling her eyes.

The Bridge of Bilröst will appear in the eastern sky and connect our world with Midgard, Blòdha explained.

That is nothing special, Hevring said, The bridge always appears during the feast.

The colors will glitter brightly just before bursting into flames, Duva added, They always do.

But this time will be different, Blòdha explained, Queen Ràn plans to cross it.

That is foolish, Bara spouted, Everyone knows Thor is the only one who has the power to do that.

Has the queen gone mad? Hevring asked.

The bridge is too weak for her to cross, Duva said.

Do not underestimate the queen, Blòdha laughed. She has discovered a way.

How? Læva asked.

A great sacrifice will be made, Blòdha said, narrowing her eyes.

Sacrifice? Hronn furrowed her brow.

"Yes, Hronn.
