With labored steps the hulky metal suit travels across the arid, empty plains. No water. No life. Just endless rolling hills. Its heavy metal foot slips on the dead grass, but with a jerk the suit rights itself and resumes its toilsome trek.
Miles ahead there is movement. A ship approaches, hovering a hundred yards above the dead grass, its immense metal facets colored to match the landscape.
The ship dwarfs the suit, spewing gas as it comes to a halt. Smaller craft disconnect from the sides of the silver ship and surround the hill. The suit remains still as the hovercraft target its metal form.
Identify yourself!
a voice demands from one of the hovercraft.
The suits makes no movement.
If you are Jishiren, identify yourself!
The order is accompanied by several warning shots aimed at the cyber suit’s feet.
The massive ship lowers to the edge of the hill and a door opens at its base. A ramp lowers, and several armed, metal-plated suits step out. Their bright, painted shells glimmer in the sun. They approach the lone suit with guns trained at its head.
As they near the suit, they see it is badly damaged. Its arms are bound with thick iron shackles. Its facial screen is covered by a black cloth tied around the back of its head, blinding its vision.
The approaching suits halt a few paces from it.
Surrender, by order of the Surviving Twelve Colonies.
The damaged suit bows its head. It drops to its knees.
Metal hands catch it before it collapses to the ground. They lift the damaged suit and carry it through the door of the waiting ship.
Bright lights blink on inside the lab. A team of people enter, each wearing medical masks, gloves, and white uniforms. They turn the light toward the table, where the captured suit lays motionless.
An older man with white hair and glasses steps into the light. The Jishiren’s anatomy is different from a human’s,
he states. The younger assistants approach the suit nervously. Have any of you ever worked with one?
No, doctor,
the assistants respond.
Very well.
The doctor lifts a knife. We must open the suit immediately.
He inspects the damaged suit. He cuts free the cloth covering the facial screen which allows the Jishiren to see. The screen is opaque and doesn’t allow him to assess the state of the creature within.
The suit is covered with charring and grime, scratched and dinged on almost every surface.
Is it... still alive?
one of the assistants asks.
The doctor presses a lever to lower the table, giving him access to the suit’s front. I don’t see any major injuries, though he has seen some heavy action.
Sir...
An assistant taps the doctor’s shoulder.
He looks up. Entering from the side of the lab is Arisun, captain of the Jishiren aboard the ship, manning a large cyber suit colored in red and black metal. The door closes behind him and he crosses his arms, watching them.
The doctor hesitates a few moments, seeing Arisun’s opaque glare isn’t locked on him, but on the damaged suit. Arisun has come to stand guard. The doctor swallows and inspects the thick iron cuffs on the suit’s wrists.
We’ll need the torch.
They light a gas flame and the doctor carefully starts to cut the thinner metal locking the cuffs together. Halfway through, colored plastic starts to melt under the fire. The flame cuts through the plastic, then ignites the thin copper wire beneath.
The shackles, which appeared to made of solid iron, give a mechanical, then a computerized clink. They tighten on the suit’s wrists.
The doctor and assistants startle as the mechanized cuffs squeeze tighter with a jerk. The cuffs are unable to crush the suit’s arms, but something inside the suit is set off by the pressure. There is a click, then a hiss inside the suit’s arm.
And what follows those sounds makes the doctor and assistants cringe. A scream, muffled from within the suit.
The scream of a woman.
Move aside!
Arisun yells. He pushes the dazed doctor to the floor. The suit thrashes and arches its back. Arisun straddles it, pushing his massive weight to hold it down.
Whoever... whatever is inside is in pain.
Arisun digs his metal fingers between the cuffs and with an enormous growl he breaks them off. Electricity sizzles as he crushes them between his palms.
The suit is free of the cuffs, but its pain does not ease. Arisun works quickly, starting the sequence of adjustments of the panels and gears on the suit’s surface that will open it.
The assistants help the doctor stand and they step back. They keep their distance they as they watch Arisun move with the precision and speed that only a machine can possess.
Soon Arisun has unlocked the front cover, but instead of lifting on its own it blasts out cool air. Arisun locks his hands under the front plate and forces the joints apart.
Instead of seeing the gray flesh and pale eyes of the Jishiren, he reveals a human woman. She’s gritting her teeth in pain, her eyes are wet with tears. The doctor and assistants gasp when they see her, but Arisun stares down grimly.
That’s impossible,
Arisun’s deep mechanical voice echoes through the lab.
Her eyes flutter at his voice but she doesn’t look away from the light. Her body is thin, bruised and dirtied with dried blood. Above her right eyebrow is a strange tattoo of jagged and curly designs, set with pure metal.
She sucks in a breath between her teeth and pushes her head back, making her messy brown hair tumble around her face. Arisun traces her distress down to her arm. She’s trying to pull it out from the arm of the suit, but Arisun finds the suit is perfectly formed around it.
Arisun changes his demeanor, working on the mechanical arm like he did the chest of the suit to remove it. When her arm is freed he finds three small pins punctured her wrist, and blue tracks traveling up her vein from the injury.
Uszor poison!
the doctor exclaims.
Arisun grabs her upper bicep and squeezes it in his metal hand, cutting off her circulation. She cries out in
