    Run with Me

    By Edith Edremoda

Fabian, what took you so long? Jessie demanded.

My friend laughed at me as he approached, holding his schoolbag in his hands.

Why Jessie, if I didn’t know better, I would think you were excited to get beaten by me again today.

Fabian and Jessie had been friends since kindergarten. They lived on the same street and went to the same school. Their school was nearby, so ever since they were old enough, they walked home together.

They made a habit of racing down the street. And despite the fact that she never, ever won, Jessie competed enthusiastically. She was convinced today was the day she would win. She knew she would win because she finally knew her weakness – she lost momentum while descending the mounts of sand.

It didn’t matter that Fabian was nine and she was eight. She was bigger physically, noticeably so. People told her she was.

I will win today. You will see, Jessie told him tauntingly.

I don’t think so, but you can try, Fabian replied, unfazed. You know what?

    What? Jessie asked.

I will let you have a head start.

When they got to the beginning of their street, Fabian said, Okay Jess. I will count to twenty. That will be your head start.

You don’t have to, Fabian. I will win – with or without it, she replied confidently.

No you won’t. But I want you to eat your words. Fabian laughed as Jessie prepared for the race.

Smiling, she looked at the hurdle in front of her. She had always loved to run. But her love for it had grown along with her. The local government was repairing the road to their houses, and they made it more fun.

The street was riddled with potholes, and the government had decided to pour asphalt on it. Before they could do that, they had to pour sand on it to level the ground. The sand created an undulating terrain for Jessie and Fabian. Each had a space of about one kilometer between them. They would run on top of it, sand filling their shoes. Then they would run down it and continue to the next one. Up and down they went ... until they got to the end of their street. The first person to get there was the winner!

Initially, they ran for the fun of it. But the more they ran, the more intense the competition became. Fabian always won, and Jessica was looking forward to winning – even if it was just once.
