Chapter One
Mid March
Terry, are you crying? What is it?
I wiped my tears with a napkin. Oh, it’s just a sad story that a customer told me. I’ve been going through a weepy spell.
Bonnie patted my arm. I think it’s the dreary weather that’s got us all down. Come over and have a seat with Sean and me. You’ve been waiting tables all morning and deserve a break.
Bonnie and Sean were my closest friends and co-owners of ‘Crafts and Joe,’ a café and handicraft shop housed in an old train station in Greenbanks, PA. We’d been friends since childhood, had retired from teaching early and shared a love of dogs. When we weren’t at the store, we often hung out with our pooches at the Riverfront Dog Park. We’d all worked hard to help design and build the huge state of the art dog park along the beautiful Allegheny River. We were sure it would be a great asset to our historic and picturesque community. Sadly, the park had been the site of four mysterious deaths and had become the stuff of legend and superstition. It has been over a year since the last murder there, but most people were spooked at the idea of taking their beloved pets there. As members of the dog park board, we were working at trying to create a more positive image. Unfortunately the four deaths had touched each of us personally, and we were all having difficulty coming to grips with the far-reaching changes and emptiness they’d left in our lives.
I sat down at our usual corner table and smiled at Sean and Bonnie. Sean had George Clooney good looks, was a widower and the father of two teenaged boys. Bonnie was thin with unruly short red hair and the look of the mathematician that she was. We leaned very heavily on each other.
So what’s the sad story that brought you to tears?
asked Bonnie as she set a mocha latte in front of me.
My eyes filled with tears again. "This farmer in Ohio liked to ride his four wheeler ATV around his property and his dog enjoyed chasing after him. One day the dog was barking and carrying on something crazy as the farmer drove through the fields. The farmer was afraid that the dog might get his leg run over by the ATV and shouted at him to stay back. The dog still kept close to the ATV and was barking frantically, so the farmer pelted the animal with a small stone he had in his pocket. That seemed to keep the dog
