10:00 A.M.
It was hot – hot and sticky.
For weeks, the farmers of the region had looked to the sky, hoping beyond hope that they’d spy a rain cloud. When they’d go near blind by the beating of the sun on their retinas, they’d shake their heads and go back inside with a self-promise that the rain would come. It always did. It was just taking its time this year…
When the rain finally did come, the heavens stayed open for a week straight. Gardens and fields quickly reached saturation points. Creeks and rivers rose to run along the upper edges of banks that waged a battle to confine them. A farmer’s relief turned to worry that it wasn’t ever going to stop. Uneasy jokes about building an ark bounced around between friends when they met at the Feed Store before a sigh of resignation was completed with: Well, we needed it…
