Chapter 1: On the move!
Hanna put down her book about Australia. She was 10 years old now and had always wanted to see a koala. She turned to her younger brother. He was 8 years old.
She wanted to tell him why koalas can only live in Australia. About how koalas can only eat leaves from special Gum trees. About how these Gum trees are only found in Australia.
Did you know that Koalas…,
she stopped.
Toby was playing Mario on the airplane game console. Hanna knew that Toby would never listen to her while he was playing a video game.
Grandpa was already fast asleep. Hanna looked out the window and said goodbye to her home in Taipei as the airplane lifted off. She knew one of the millions of lights down below was her apartment.
Hanna was excited to visit a place she had never been, but always felt a little sad to leave her father. He was a kind man who Hanna loved dearly, but since her Mom died, he worked a lot.
He was much too busy to take them on world adventures, so Grandpa would take them instead. Dad had always told her and Toby that the world was waiting for them. He talked of adventures that made the two children dream of wonderful things.
He always reminded them, You were born in Taiwan, but you’re an Earthling. The whole world is your home.
Hanna sat up in her seat. She thought of the exciting adventures she and her brother will have in Australia. She imagined swimming with dolphins and running next to jumping kangaroos. She hoped that the people in Australia would understand her English. She hadn’t practiced much in Taiwan. She had a Canadian friend in Taiwan who lived nearby, but of course they spoke Chinese together.
Toby suddenly put his controller
