INTRODUCTION
What are the cool names for babies?
That’s one of the first questions most parents and interviewers ask us. Which names are cool? And how can I choose a cool name for my child?
Cool has taken over from such qualities as tradition and stylishness as the premier criterion of a name. Even those parents who want to give their children family names or names with ethnic significance often want those choices to be cool.
In the five years since the first edition of Cool Names for Babies was published, the cool factor has become even more important in choosing a name. The Web, the explosion in cool-related pregnancy and baby paraphernalia of all kinds, the fascination with celebrity babies (and their cool names), and the general obsession with coolness all fuel the passion.
So what’s new and exciting when it comes to cool names? And how do you choose a name for your child that’s cool not just today but forever?
Cool Means Unusual
The new cool names are almost all unusual. With once uncommon names like Madison and Ethan, Joshua and Sophia now in the Top 10, you have to move further and further from the mainstream to find a name that’s truly distinctive and, yes, cool. While fashionable classic names such as Jack and Emma may still be wonderful choices (and perhaps ultimately the right ones for you), you can’t really call them cool. And trendy names ranging from Aidan to Ava, Tyler to Taylor are simply too widely used to be considered really cool.
Cool Is Diverse
The first generation of cool names—Jodi and Jordan, Sunshine and Shane—were homogenous, designed to blur boundaries between genders, races, and nationalities. The new cool names, on the other hand, celebrate diversity by including names from around the world, ethnic choices that trumpet family heritage or move beyond it. Cool names include elaborately feminine names for girls, macho names for boys, and choices that play with gender stereotypes. There are names resurrected from ancient cultures as well as newly minted choices.
Cool Goes Beyond Convention
The pool of cool names draws from sources far beyond
