Angel Teachers from the Animal Kingdom - Lorraine Miller

    CHAPTER THIRTEEN

ANGEL TEACHERS FROM THE ANIMAL KINGDOM

    Lorraine, Lady and Samantha, 1997

Even as a small child, I was aware of my connection with the animal kingdom. My astrology chart indicates I have most of my planets in earth signs, which would explain why I am happiest when surrounded by nature and have a profound respect for all living things.

Unfortunately, we never had any pets when I was young. However, I grew up in a small town on Long Island at a time when children freely walked or rode a bicycle to get around on their own. When riding through town, it was as if I were a dog or cat magnet, having them appear, seemingly from nowhere and follow along with me as I pedaled. Often one would follow me all the way home, but I was never allowed to keep it.

There was a gentle and friendly older dog that came around for handouts to all of the homes in our neighborhood. He was a retired Army service dog who had seen military action, and everyone just loved him. One day, right before my eyes, he uncharacteristically went berserk and attacked a cat and mutilated it. A police officer was called to shoot the suffering cat, and they took the dog to be euthanized. My stepfather explained that the dog probably had a war flashback or something, but I was inconsolable for the longest time, grieving for both the dog and the cat.

My sensitivity to animals continued as I became an adult. When seeing one which had been injured by a car, I would get so emotionally upset that I would have to pull over to the side of the road to gather myself. Many times I held or comforted an injured creature as it died, even a bird or a rabbit.

Although it still disturbs me to this day, I have learned to detach my emotions and accept that such occurrences are beyond my control. When my own pets make their transition, I lovingly assist them by holding them in my arms and speaking gently. This allows me to offer my creatures love and comfort for a peaceful crossing over without fear, knowing they were a part of God’s blessing and grateful for the time we had together.

Nothing soothes me as much as the sound of a bird chirping or singing, the playfulness of kittens and puppies, or the beauty of a horse running free. I enjoy watching a lizard lounging on a wall on a hot day as it does its pushups, and seeing it turn its head to listen when it hears a door slam.

I have observed how even a mother mouse will fret and worry over a sick baby, just like a human mother. Are we really all that different? The consensus opinion is that animals don’t have feelings, and perhaps much is instinct, but anyone who is observant and tuned in to the animal kingdom knows that many animals are certainly capable of emotions.

Although I understand the law of nature and survival of the fittest, I grieve for the thin, hungry coyote as well as the rabbit it catches to keep alive. So while my mind understands the necessity, my heart cries that it has to be this way.

A psychic reader once told me that I was here to help the animals evolve. To the contrary, I have evolved because of them! I have learned more about love from the animals I have lived with than from most of the people I have met.

Knowing that everyone has their own unique destiny which may not involve animals, I feel fortunate not to have missed experiencing the most honest, unconditional, love one can receive in this life. In turn, I hope that in some way I made their lives more blessed, whether they were to remain in my life or be placed in the care of
