    The Thing in the Basement

    I discovered the thing’s existence a few days after my wife’s departure.

    She concluded that the many hours spent I in the office, outweighing the ones spent by her side, undoubtedly proved that she wasn’t part of my priorities. No ultimatums, nothing at all. Apparently, I didn’t catch the signals she was sending me; I should have been more in tuned to her needs. She should have understood, what she was blaming me for was the very proof that I wanted to provide to her needs, making sure she wouldn’t lack of anything. One night I came home from work and she was gone.

    She had taken her half of the closet’s contents, emptied the drawers, took the things or the furniture she wanted and left a simple and concise note on the kitchen table:

    I am leaving you.

    I will call you.
