    PROLOGUE Unveiling the Hidden Battle

The world isn't what it seems, my friend. Beyond the surface lies a hidden realm, where a relentless clash between forces of good and evil unfolds. Supernatural beings walk among us, engaged in an eternal struggle on opposing sides of this cosmic war. It's a battle shrouded in secrecy, with no clear victor in sight. Depending on who you ask, they'll swear allegiance to either the noble cause of righteousness or the twisted path of wickedness. Long ago, the battle lines were drawn, dividing these extraordinary beings into two factions: the Verga, creatures who feed upon humans in various ways, and the Empa, those who resist such temptations. The conflict knows no end, with only one coveted reward that awaits them all—a soulmate, their destined consort.

Now, let me introduce you to Dahlia, a Kitsune—a mystical shapeshifter capable of assuming the form of a fox. She firmly believes that Kitsune, by their very nature, align themselves with the forces of good. Dahlia was blessed with the proximity of her consort, James, who was born into the same pack. Since their tender years, they have been inseparable neighbors and the closest of confidants. Their relationship was nothing short of magical, a bond so profound and unique that it defied description. While many Kitsune struggle to find their consorts, Dahlia and James were fortunate to have found each other early on, their connection destined and unbreakable. But fate can be cruel, and tragedy struck when an insidious Wraith claimed James' life, leaving Dahlia shattered, her capacity to love extinguished.

And now, the unexpected twists and turns emerge from the shadows. It was amidst the twisted wreckage of their mangled car that the Wendigo found Dahlia, moments away from her soul departing her earthly vessel. Against her will, he performed a mysterious act, infusing his very blood into her veins, defying the natural order and miraculously saving her from the clutches of death. She should have perished that day, for reasons beyond the physical realm. Yet, to the astonishment of all, Dahlia grows stronger with each passing day, defying the odds and the expectations of the supernatural world. Why does she continue to defy fate? How can she possibly raise their unborn child without the capacity to love? What motives lie behind the Wendigo's intervention, and why does he boldly claim Dahlia as his consort? Most importantly, a question looms large in Dahlia's heart—why does she find herself inexplicably drawn to believe his enigmatic words?

The stage is now set, my dear reader, for an extraordinary journey into a world where love, loss, and mysterious alliances intertwine. Through perilous twists and soul-stirring revelations, Dahlia's path will unfold before our very eyes, testing the boundaries of faith and resilience. This is her story, an epic tale that transcends the realms of possibility—prepare to be enthralled as we embark upon this extraordinary adventure together!

    Chapter 1: Damien's Unyielding Devotion

Damien must've drifted off again on the squishy bean bag chair by his sweetheart's bedside. It had become his nightly ritual for almost three months now, but he didn't mind. He'd willingly spend three years or even longer right there, by her side, if that's what it took for her to heal. Gratitude filled his heart every day, knowing she was still with him. But, he couldn't shake off the haunting reminder that he almost missed his chance due to his own fears and foolish pride.

Long before Damien even tried to make her his, he knew Dahlia was his one and only. There was this big obstacle between them, though—a Kitsune and a Wendigo, from opposite sides of the battlefield. She was an Empa, and he was a Verga. Despite their races being enemies, when Wendigos come of age, usually between seventeen and eighteen, they hear the soul's call of their beloved consorts.

When Dahlia's soul called out to Damien, he ran to her and immediately recognized her as a Kitsune. But fear grabbed hold of him, and he froze. A relationship between a Kitsune and a Wendigo seemed impossible, with all the bad blood between them. Instead of claiming her, he silently watched as Dahlia found a mate among her own kind. It hurt him to see them together, but he convinced himself it was better than the alternative. Yet, deep inside, his soul longed for Dahlia, pushing aside his thoughts and emotions. He tried to stay cool, logical, and distant, thinking it was easier that way, without letting emotions mess with his decisions.

But everything changed that fateful night when Dahlia and her Kitsune mate were attacked by a wicked Wraith while driving. Damien, way over in California, had purposely kept his distance. Why California, you ask? To create as much space as humanly possible between himself and Dahlia. Distance, though, couldn't protect him from knowing. Damien heard Dahlia's soul saying goodbye. She was on the verge of death. Something deep within him shattered. He was losing his sweetheart because he'd been a scaredy-cat, hiding behind a war he barely understood the purpose of.

Even though he was over a thousand miles away, Damien knew he'd never reach her in time, even with his super speed. And deep down, he didn't want to. He accepted the fact that Dahlia would pass away before he could get there. So, he started running, punishing himself for being such a numbskull, seeking self-inflicted suffering. He wanted to pay for his own stupidity and the choices that kept him away from her. The war between their races shouldn't have stopped him from being with his true love.

Damien ran with one mission in mind—to get to the spot where Dahlia's soul would leave her lifeless body. His plan was simple: to sit near her motionless form and mourn his loss. He ran non-stop for nearly two days, through day and night, way beyond what his body could handle. He refused to quit, not even for a bite to eat.

Around thirty hours after the crash, Damien arrived at the wreckage of the car. The wreck lay before him, a twisted heap of crumpled metal. It was clear that both passengers had perished. Flames still devoured the remnants, but no human had discovered the heartbreaking scene. He came as close as he could without being burned, and then, in a desperate attempt to keep her alive, he took a small, sharp knife from his pocket and sliced open his wrist. It hurt like crazy, but he didn't mind. The pain meant nothing compared to the thought of losing Dahlia forever.

With his lifeblood flowing, Damien leaned over her and whispered, Drink, my love. He hoped against hope that his Wendigo blood would be enough to bring her back from the brink of death. It was a daring move, a wild shot in the dark, but he couldn't bear the thought of losing her without a fight.

Miraculously, she stirred. Dahlia's eyes fluttered open, and her shaky breaths filled the air. She was alive! Damien's heart raced with excitement, and he couldn't help but let out a whoop of joy. He cradled her delicate body in his arms, feeling the heat radiating from her burnt skin. The scent of smoke and charred metal still hung in the air, mingling with the fresh smell of the surrounding forest.

Damien began his journey back to Ohio, his mother's place being the closest. He had to get there before sunrise, seeking shelter and safety for Dahlia. As he ran, the wind whistled through the trees, carrying the faint scent of pine needles and damp earth. His heart pounded in his chest, each beat echoing in his ears, a rhythm of hope and determination.

His mind raced with thoughts of what lay ahead. He knew his mother wouldn't be thrilled to see him with a Kitsune, especially after what had happened in the war. But Damien didn't care. Dahlia was his everything, his mate, and he would fight for her, no matter what. The taste of victory was on his tongue, as sweet and exhilarating as maple syrup on warm pancakes. He would prove to everyone that love knew no boundaries, not even the ones drawn by a senseless war.

Tears streamed down Damien's face as he carried Dahlia through the night, his fingers tracing the burns on her fragile skin. He blamed himself for her suffering, for not being there when she needed him the most. But he vowed to make up for it, to be there for her every step of the way. They were in this together, connected by an unbreakable bond. He felt her pain as if it were his own, but he also felt her strength, her determination to overcome the odds. And with every beat of his heart, he promised to be her rock, her guiding light.

As they approached his mother's house, the first rays of dawn painted the sky with shades of pink and orange. The air turned crisp and cool, carrying the scent of dew-kissed grass. Damien's heart raced with anticipation, knowing that his mother's reaction would be far from ideal. But he was ready to face her wrath, armed with love and the unwavering belief that he had made the right choice.

Chapter 2: A Heart in Flames

Flashes of blinding light burned through Dahlia's closed eyelids, causing her head to ache and her lips to tingle like a wildfire. The remnants of the accident flooded her mind, reminding her of the perfect day she had shared with James, celebrating their third anniversary and the conception of their first child. The beach, the five-star seafood restaurant—the memories were still vivid, like bursts of vibrant color painted on her soul.

But then the Wraith attacked, forcing their car off the road, shattering their dreams in an instant. Dahlia could still hear the haunting sound of James' head colliding with the dashboard, the light in his eyes fading away. It was the moment she lost him, the moment her world shattered into a million pieces. She felt her Kitsune howl in agony, her soul crumbling in grief. Trapped in the twisted wreckage, time seemed to freeze as she sat there, engulfed in pain.

Dahlia knew her time was running out. The car, engulfed in flames, became her fiery prison. With every breath, the searing pain inside her intensified. She closed her eyes, accepting her fate, waiting for her last breath to be swallowed by the flames. And just as her soul was about to depart, a figure descended from the heavens, not an angel but a semi-insane, human-eating Verga Wendigo named Damian.

Dahlia's senses came alive as she awoke from her ethereal slumber. Her eyes, still healing, struggled to adjust to the world around her. She could feel the warmth of Damian's touch, his blood coursing through her veins, bringing relief to her pain. It was as if his blood was an elixir, a taste that both soothed and excited her senses. The music playing softly in the background caressed her ears, a gentle melody that eased her troubled mind.

Damian, her self-appointed keeper, tended to her wounds with utmost care. His hands, careful not to touch her burns, moved like gentle whispers against her skin. She winced in pain as he changed her bandages, applying soothing salves that elicited a mixture of relief and discomfort. Yet, in his eyes, she saw an unwavering determination, a fiery passion to nurse her back to health.

Days blended into each other, following a routine of pain and healing. Damian spoon-fed her nourishing meals, each bite carrying a taste that reminded her of survival, of the love that kept her going. She felt a mix of emotions, a battle between her yearning for James and the growing bond she shared with Damian. It was a tumultuous journey, filled with contradictions and unanswered questions.

In her weakest moments, when pain consumed her, Damian's blood became her salvation. It washed over her like a warm fog, temporarily shielding her from the agony. He was her rock, her source of strength, even when she couldn't find it within herself. And in those vulnerable moments, she couldn't help but feel a flicker of something more—a connection, a spark that defied the boundaries of their races.

Damian's presence became her solace, his voice a balm to her wounded soul. He read to her for hours on end, immersing her in worlds of romance and adventure, transporting her away from the confines of her bed. The words danced in the air, painting vivid images in her mind, creating a tapestry of emotions that filled her heart.

But it wasn't just the pain and healing that bound them together. Dahlia witnessed Damian's unwavering dedication, his selflessness in caring for her. He was more than her keeper—he was her protector, her lifeline. She had never known such devotion, such unconditional love, and it both frightened and captivated her.

As the days stretched into weeks, Dahlia's body slowly began to heal. Her burns, though still tender, showed signs of progress. Yet, in her darkness, she was plagued by confusion and doubts. She couldn't fathom the possibility of loving again, not after losing James. The idea of her unborn child kept her anchored to life, but her heart remained guarded.

Damian's constant presence only deepened her internal struggle. Despite his kindness and affection, she believed that the divide between their races was insurmountable. Kitsune were creatures of light, while Wendigo were shadows of darkness. It was the way of the world, an unbreakable rule. And yet, Damian's presence challenged everything she thought she knew.

In the depths of her thoughts, Dahlia yearned for release, for the comforting embrace of oblivion. She wanted to escape the pain, the uncertainty, and reunite with James in the next life. But Damian refused to let her slip away. He held fast to his mission, tending to her needs, easing her suffering, and igniting a tiny spark of hope within her wounded heart.

Together, they forged a bond forged in the crucible of pain and healing. Dahlia clung to her memories of James, cherishing them in the depths of her soul. And as Damian's love wrapped around her like a protective cloak, she dared to believe that, maybe, just maybe, her heart had room for one more flame to flicker in the darkness.

    Chapter 3: A Mother's Love

Ina, Damian's mama, couldn't help but moan softly as she watched her son retreat to his room without feeding. Concern etched lines of worry on her face as she witnessed his weakening state. It was essential for a young Wendigo like Damian to have a healthy meal every day. Skipping meals only led to weakness and an insatiable thirst for blood.

Night after night, Damian bled for Dahlia, yet neglected to properly nourish himself, leaving Ina deeply troubled. She couldn't help but wonder how much longer he could continue like this. Determined to intervene, Ina made up her mind to bring a human donor home tonight to encourage Damian to feed more regularly.

Years ago, Ina's human consort had pleaded with her not to keep human donors
