Fire Moon Rising - Vikki Young

    Chapter one

Fayette was born on the most remembered day in history. A beautiful purple sun filled the day, and a fluorescent purple moon shone that night. She was born a royal fairy, fulfilling a prophecy that for many centuries had been believed to be true.

When the purple sun and moon rise in the sky, a female fairy princess will be born, who must aid in the Fire Moon War!

She must keep her first love safe from harm, by combining the three!

Fayette was born with wavy black hair that was fine and soft. Her eyes the brightest green. Everyone who gazed upon the princess said, she had a mischievous twinkle in her eye. Fayette had a fantastic childhood, full of love, her parents, the king and queen, doting on her. During her childhood odd things would happen around her. Small amounts of fairy power collected in her fingers giving the princess abnormal magic for her age. Amazed by this, Fayette would show off doing fairy tricks and illusions, wowing the local townsfolk, who started calling her ‘magic fingers’. Her magic power became somewhat legendary. As Fayette got older she came to love the name and vowed that she would do nothing but good with the power she was given. However, the princess had a few unguided mishaps, and on one occasion accidentally set a local's hut on fire. She was severely punished for that incident!

As a teenager she was taught to spin, garland and weave, which bore Fayette to distraction, making her rebel against her parents and the world around her. Whenever she felt angry or wanted to be alone, the princess visited her favourite swing in a far corner of the castle grounds by an old overgrown pond. A big ancient willow tree stood nearby that would ripple softly in the spring's breeze. If she sat quietly on the swing long enough the odd fish jumped to the surface making her giggle. The pond surface was scattered with lush green lily pads, which burst forth with white flowers every year. Bored one day of the swing Fayette discovered a bubbling stream beyond a small red brick wall, close to the ancient willow tree. On the other side of the wall tall ferns and reeds grew making it an ideal hiding place for the weary princess. It became another of Fayette's secret places, and as she grew up the princess spent more and more time over the wall, always with a picnic basket full of different pastries she had snuck from the castle kitchens. Fayette would sit upon the bank for hours at a time, listening to the animals around her who had become used to her presence. A little blue kingfisher would sometimes fly down to catch fish from the stream or peck at the bread that Fayette scattered by her feet.

One day, as the princess sat by the stream, reading and eating snacks from her basket, she saw movement out the corner of her eye. Glancing up she noticed a large creature standing behind the willow tree. She gasped out loud in surprise and astonishment. Elegantly a goat like creature with two long twisted horns, black fur with golden highlights and long black slender legs stepped out. The leaves rustled and danced in a sudden gust of wind, and Fayette instantly knew, Its magic.

Very good, my child!’ the creature said telepathically, aware of Fayette's thoughts. The goat like creature stepped closer, making eye contact with the princess, ‘I am the head of my kin’ the creature spoke into Fayette’s mind.

What are you? What do you want? Fayette asked, unsure if she wanted to know the answer, her mind suddenly invaded.

We are Markor, I am here to help you,"

Why do I need your help? Feeling the princess's apprehension, the creature spoke again, "What’s wrong?’

You're scaring me! Fayette replied, moving back.

    Look at me!’ it demanded.

Instead of turning and running which her inner mind was screaming for her to do, she reluctantly focused upon the Markor and was instantly lost within the large black eyes. After what seemed hours Fayette blinked and looked away, her mind reeling with strange thoughts.

What?! Are you! Fayette breathed stumbling backwards, tripping over her basket, no don’t tell me! I don't want to know! She quickly gathered up her things, keeping the Markor in her sights. Bolting up the slope Fayette vaulted over the wall, making a dash for the castle. A sudden gust of wind swept up behind the princess, whipping the picnic basket from her grip. She didn't stop to retrieve it or look back, but held her shoulder bag tighter to her chest in fear.

She approached the castle in a state of near panic, the strange encounter un-nerving her. Fayette had no idea what it meant or why it had happened. With her head bent Fayette didn’t notice a hooded figure wandering in her direction. She was so busy clutching her cloak around herself that Fayette ran straight into them. The princess fell awkwardly to the ground spilling the contents of her shoulder bag everywhere. Believing the Markor creature had followed her up to the castle, Fayette cried out in terror.

I’m sorry, the figure said, squatting down to help her up, I should look where I’m going.

No it’s my fault, Fayette said lifting her head, and finding herself looking into a pair of blue eyes, its this wind. Gathering up her things, Fayette shoved them haphazardly back into her bag. Her only concern was getting back inside the safety of the castle and away from the perceived danger, but the hooded stranger insisted on helping, making Fayette fumble, dropping her things all over again.

    Sorry.

It's okay and thank you, she said standing up and glancing nervously around.

My pleasure, say could you help me? the figure asked.

Sure, Fayette replied smiling restlessly, once again clutching the cloak tightly around her.

Can you please tell me where the servant kitchens are? I've been wandering aimlessly around here for ages.

Of course. I was heading that way myself, Fayette said, follow me.

Thanks, I’m Saefh by the way, the cloaked figure said pulling his hood back, revealing a young man, slightly older than Fayette, with black shoulder length hair and a wide smile. They followed the wall of the castle until they approached the outhouse; a small entrance nestled in the side of the castle, one Fayette used constantly to avoid her parents.

Nice to meet you, I’m Fayette. Are you new here? she asked curiously, not recognising the young man.

Yes, I’m the new groundskeeper. Why do you ask?

"Because everybody here knows where the kitchens are!" Fayette replied laughing, making Saefh blush. Talking to Saefh was a good distraction, and Fayette's heart beat finally slowed to a steady rhythm, her encounter with the Markor suddenly forgotten. Saefh smiled back at her giving Fayette butterflies in her stomach.

How are you finding your new position at the castle? Fayette asked.

Well the grounds are quite large so I haven't quite got my bearings yet. The rose bush in the front courtyard with the red, white and pink flowers are hard to manage due to the big thorns.

Yes, I’ve always thought that bush deadly, why father got it I’ll never know, Fayette said, amused.

Here look at this. Saefh drew back his cloak sleeve, revealing a badly scratched arm.

That looks deep! Does it hurt? Fayette asked concern spreading across her young face.

No, but this one does! Saefh said pulling his trouser leg up to reveal a long deep scratch the length of his shin.

That looks sore and infected! Come I shall have it dressed! Fayette pushed the door to the kitchens open. Bringing a draft into the hot kitchen, the staff stopped what they were doing to observe who had entered. For a second the servants looked Saefh up and down whispering quietly, until they realised Fayette was standing there.

You, Fayette said, pointing to one of the servants, a young fairy, gather a cloth, a bowl and some healing ointment.

Yes your highness, she bobbed. Saefh looked at Fayette in a new light realising he had been conversing with the royal princess.

Minutes later the young fairy came back with the required items, good now will you please attend to these scratches, Fayette said, directing the fairy to Saefh's cuts.

    Of course mam.

So you are princess Fayette then, Saefh said, wincing as his cuts were cleaned.

"How perceptive of you, Fayette smirked, So Saefh, what do you enjoy doing the most around the castle?"

I have to say hunting is my favourite, it gets the adrenaline pumping. Those wily game birds dodging and ducking the hawks are funny, running every which way. The hawks swooping over our heads and the hounds chasing the birds out from their hiding places. So much fun, he paused gazing into Fayette's eyes until he spoke again, you should try it sometime.

Maybe I will, Fayette contemplated him. She examined Saefh's wound, That’s very good, she said to the fairy who had been tending it.

Thank you mam, will that be all.

Yes, thank you. The fairy left to tend to her chores, leaving Fayette and Saefh alone.

    Suddenly DINNG DONNG DINNG DONNNNG.

That’s the dinner bell! I must go! Fayette cried jumping, I cannot be late. Pulling her bag onto her shoulder she dashed across the kitchen to a stairway that led to the upper levels of the castle.

Wait! Saefh yelled leaping down from the counter, banging his leg, but his shouts were lost in the clattering of pots, pans and kitchen noise. He craned his neck to look but Fayette had gone.

Fayette was out of breath as she stepped into the throne room. Her hair was untidy, there were grass stains on her dress and her cloak was ripped where she had jumped the wall earlier. The princess's parents were waiting for her arrival, sitting on their thrones. They were an imposing pair. Queen Fianna was tall, slim and elegant. She wore a silky red dress covered in small red gems, which matched her long curly red hair perfectly. Rubies glistened around her throat, wrists and ankles. A small tiara sat atop her head with a ruby at its centre so whichever way the Queen moved red sparkles followed. It was a bewitching sight and one King Xaeh never tired of. He matched the queen's height and was slender and athletic. Long black hair with blue highlights fell gracefully down his back and piercing bright violet eyes mesmerised anyone who looked into them. A silver blue circlet sat neatly on his head with an aquamarine shaped bug at its centre, which hung between the king's eyes.

Look at you! What have you been doing Fayette? That is no way for a princess to be seen, Queen Fianna pointed at the ripped cloak, Go and change for dinner at once, her mother said sharply, whilst checking her own appearance was immaculate.

Yes mother, Fayette sighed. After her encounter with the Markor and Saefh, Fayette had completely forgotten how she looked. The princess left the throne room, quickly heading to her chamber where her lady in waiting, Mia, a young Pixie, greeted her. Gold freckles sprinkled the Pixie's face and a mop of short purple hair covered her small head. She had two gold wings, which fluttered back and forth as she went about her work. She was straightening up the bed when Fayette entered. Evening your highness, Mia said bobbing.

I thought we agreed it was to be Fayette, Mia. I need my dinner dress please, Fayette said, swiftly undressing herself.

Yes Fayette, Mia replied, rushing to the wardrobe in the far corner of the chamber. She took a white lacy dress off a hanger and helped Fayette into it.

Mia, have you seen the new groundskeeper? Fayette asked staring out the window whilst holding her arms up, allowing Mia to zip up the dress.

Yes I saw him this morning wrestling with the rose bush in the front courtyard. Why?

Has he been shown around the entire grounds? Fayette asked breathing in as the dress suffocated her.

Yes I think so why? Mia stepped away from Fayette, your all zipped up.

I bumped into him just a couple of minutes ago and attended his leg, Fayette said, spinning around to face Mia, He asked me where the servants kitchens were.

"Everybody knows where they are!" Mia replied.

    That's what I told him.

Do you know his name? He is very handsome, Mia said, bending down to pick up the cloak and clothes Fayette had thrown on the floor. Mia returned to the wardrobe, picking out a pair of white satin shoes.

Saefh is his name. He seems really nice too, Fayette said, pausing for a moment to lose herself in thought, recalling Saefh's deep blue eyes. She sat brushing her hair and daydreaming on her bed, while Mia buckled her shoes. Fayette are you alright? Mia asked once she was finished.

Yes, I’m fine, Fayette replied standing up, Oh, my parents! They will be waiting. Fayette rushed out the door hoisting her skirt above her ankles, making it easier to run. She raced down the hallway to the top of a large staircase, abruptly stopping at the first step. Composing herself, Fayette walked slowly and elegantly down the red-carpeted stairs to the throne room, where her parents were still waiting. They stood majestically together, gazing out a huge window, which overlooked a large lake and forest. Fayette’s feet echoed through the huge throne room, making her parents turn to face her.

Fayette, you look lovely, that's much better, the Queen said.

Thank you mother, Fayette smiled. She acknowledged the king, Hello father.

You do look lovely, the king said, Come dinner is waiting. He offered his arm to the queen and led the way to an adjacent dining room.

A long table had been laid out covered with a crisp white cloth. Smoked ham was neatly presented with fresh crisp vegetables. Three crystal goblets sat beside three silver plates. Crystal pitchers full of freshly squeezed pear, apple and grape juice, from the castle gardens, enriched the already decorative table.

Where have you been all day? the queen asked, before delicately placing some meat and vegetables onto her tongue, savouring the taste.

I was at the bottom of the lawn, by the pond and swing, Fayette replied, enjoying a mouthful of food.

The weather hasn’t been very good today. You could of caught cold.

Mother, I have not got a cold, besides the sun has been shining all day. Fayette poured some apple juice and sipped from her goblet.

Fayette, how many times do I have to tell you not to go down there!

Fianna! the King said sharply, enough! Fayette is going to be 22, I think she can manage to get to the pond and back safely.

You always stand up for her, Xaeh! The queen retorted pushing her plate away in frustration.

She is old enough, the King finished, this is no meal time discussion.

The rest of the meal went without incident and Fayette wondered if she should mention the Markor. In the end she decided against it, knowing it would only worry her mother further.

As they were leaving the dinning room after the silent meal, Fianna spoke, Fayette, don’t go down there again.

Yes, mother, Fayette replied, I’m going to retire to bed, goodnight mother, goodnight father. She kissed her parents lightly on the cheek.

Goodnight dear, Fianna replied. The princess walked up the red-carpeted stairs and her parents returned to the throne room, heads bent together, talking in hushed whispers.

Fayette trudged through the halls feeling a little angry with her mother, but knowing it was only because her mother cared so for her. Returning to her chamber the princess found Mia placing a pan of hot coals in her bed.

Hello Fayette, Mia said, bobbing cheerfully. Mia's disposition was nearly always cheerful and optimistic which made her small gold wings flutter constantly in excitement. Her choice of clothes matched her cheerfulness. A gold-layered skirt covered purple and gold stripy leggings, and on her top was a lacy black shirt with gold trim. On her feet she wore a pair of pixie boots, her favourite item, never going anywhere without them. Fayette said a quiet hello, seating herself on the edge of a four-poster bed. Blue velvet curtains hung loosely around each side to keep out cold winter draughts. The bedclothes were bright red, (her mothers favourite colour) and the bed throw was violet, (her fathers). The open window let in the first moon rays creating pale shadows on the floor. On the windowsill was a small golden dish filled with jewellery size quartz crystals. Nestled next to it was a porcelain kingfisher and a chalk rock with small holes carved into it, some of which were filled with colourful feathers. Dotted around each of the windows in Fayette's chamber were small plant pots filled with ferns collected from the stream. Bluebells gathered from the small woods, and roses from the courtyard filled a small round vase, complimenting one of the ferns. A dark brown mahogany wardrobe with white wooden flowers as handles stood in the far corner of the room. A full-length mirror hung inside with a space to the left where the princess's dresses swung freely. On the right side of the mirror were a set of four drawers each with a bird painted upon them. The first was a kingfisher, the second a toucan, the third a waxwing with a yellow tip on its tail and waxy red feathers. The last bird was a snow bunting with brown feathers and a white head. The princess loved the paintings and often gazed at them when she was contemplating her day.

Are you alright? Mia asked, the quiet princess.

    Yes! I’m fine.

    You seem a little upset.

My parents are a little tense, I’m not sure why. But mother worries about me more than usual.

I’m sure it’s probably nothing, Mia replied.

Yes, your right Mia, it probably is nothing. I'm just tired so I am going to retire for the night, I will see you tomorrow, Fayette said, kicking off her shoes.

As you wish Fayette. Do you want help getting out of that dress?

No I am fine thank you.

Giving a little bob Mia left the room.

Fayette wandered around her chamber lost in thought. She looked out the window up at the moon before closing the shutters. Walking past the flowers she picked out the dead one's, putting them in a small bin. Noticing the porcelain kingfisher was not in it's rightful place on the window sill, Fayette looked around for it, only spotting it when she bent down. Realising her lacy dress had brushed it off the sill; she reached down to pick it up. As she stood up, Fayette felt a strange sensation run through her head, a rushing feeling, followed by a sharp pain. Feeling suddenly dizzy, Fayette fainted dropping the kingfisher, which smashed on the floor.

As Fayette regained consciousness, she saw three blurred figures by her side, who were talking in quiet voices. As the she came round the princess realised she was lying on her bed, her parents and the royal doctor by her side.

Is she.... is she going to be...be alright? Fianna asked in exasperation, holding tightly to her husband and daughter’s hands.

She’ll be fine, just let her sleep, The doctor replied.

Mother is that you? Fayette whispered, focusing on the figures once more, tightening the grip in her mother’s hand.

Yes dear, it is me, just relax everything will be alright.

Close your eyes and get some sleep. We’ll keep checking on you, her father said, leaving the room.

How do you feel? Concern showed in the lines of the doctor's face.

I feel very tired and drained.

It's alright, Fianna said, just close your eye's.

Fianna bent down and kissed Fayette on the forehead, stroking her hair until she fell asleep. After sometime, Fianna left the room quietly, red sparkles following in her wake. The queen felt more at ease knowing her daughter was being watched over by the family doctor.

Fayette didn’t sleep very well that night, and came down with a fever. The doctor dabbed her fevered brow with a damp cloth, but Fayette's face changed, from a beautiful golden brown to a very pale white. The doctor stayed with Fayette most of the night doing what he could. Mia, who had been summoned to Fayette's chamber by the queen, was charged with fetching the items the doctor required. Fayette kept rolling violently in her sleep and several times woke up screaming in pain from a burning sensation in her head. The king and queen checked in from time to time but the doctor and Mia seemed to be doing all they could to keep the princess calm and comfortable.

Give her space, the doctor commanded, when the queen came rushing in after another of Fayette's screaming episodes. Fianna moved away crying quietly in the corner, with Xaeh close by comforting her.

    Oh Fayette, she sighed.

Fianna, Xaeh said, watching his daughter, I think it is time we sent for wizard Unba. Fianna nodded.

I’ve given her some strong medicine so hopefully she can sleep a little easier, the doctor said, turning to face Xaeh and Fianna.

I hope she’ll be alright for the banquet tomorrow, Fianna sobbed.

I’m sure she will, all she needs is a little rest. She must avoid doing anything too strenuous.

What kinds of things? Fianna asked.

She has lost a lot of energy, so will be unable to run around, dance or even walk for some time, the doctor replied looking grim, Fayette is sleeping, now it is best we all got a little rest ourselves.

I agree. Come darling let’s leave Fayette to rest, Xaeh said.

I need to stay and look after her, Fianna cried.

I shall stay with her, Mia encouraged, if anything happens I shall call the doctor instantly. You need to rest your highness.

Come, we have a busy day tomorrow, Xaeh said, escorting his wife from the room.

All through the night Mia stayed by Fayette’s side, never leaving the room. Occasionally the doctor would appear to see how Fayette was doing, checking her temperature and giving her more medicine.

How is she doctor? Mia asked.

She is doing fine, this medicine will have helped her recover a lot by the morning, the doctor replied with a smile, "Mia, I will be back at midday, do you think you can manage until then?

    Yes of course doctor.

Good, I think the worst is over for now, she should sleep soundly, he said, collecting up his instruments and leaving Mia alone. Holding Fayette's hand, Mia dosed off sometime in the early hours of the morning. She awoke to a soft knock on the door. Rubbing her aching neck she roused herself. Fayette was still sleeping, so Mia gently let go of the princess's hand, which she was still holding. The pixie opened the chamber door. Good day doctor, Mia smiled.

    How is she?

Still asleep, Mia stretched and fluttered her wings.

It had been a long night for everyone, and Mia was glad to see the midday sun shining through the trees outside the window.

Mia, will you open those shutters please, the doctor asked pointing to the window, the fresh air will be good for Fayette.

Mia quietly opened the shutters, letting the sunbeam through the windows into the room. Fayette opened her eyes as the warm sun touched her pale face.

Good afternoon Fayette, how are you feeling? the doctor asked softly as Fayette tried to sit up. Supporting Fayette, the doctor fluffed up the pillows behind her.

I feel a little disorientated and hot, but generally I am feeling much better, I think, Fayette said, leaning back, briefly closing her eyes. The doctor placed his hand upon Fayette’s forehead. You do feel a little hot, he said, but it should pass, you have some colour back in your face which is a good sign. He looked over at Mia who was staring out the window watching marquees being assembled on the long lawns.

She never left your side you know, he said. Fayette looked up at Mia and smiled, making Mia smile back, wings fluttering. Mia approached Fayette, sitting next to her on the bed.

Fayette! How are you feeling? Mia asked.

Much better Mia thank you, but what happened? Mia and the doctor exchanged worried looks.

What can you remember? the doctor asked.

I remember looking for my kingfisher and then I got a sharp pain here, Fayette pointed to her head, Then I fainted.

Your parents will talk to you later Fayette. I shall be back in a little while to see how you are, the doctor said, Mia may I speak to you a moment please?

    Yes of course.

The doctor and Mia stepped outside, Mia if anything else happens please inform me immediately.

    Yes sir.

There is one more thing! Fayette needs to rest, nothing too strenuous! At the queen's banquet, not too much dancing, she has only regained a little strength.

I understand doctor, I will keep an eye on her.

Mia returned to the room, finding Fayette trying to sit up. Rushing over to her, Mia helped her up, Fayette don’t strain, you must take it easy.

I can move myself, Fayette said, throwing off the bed covers and quickly standing. Wobbling, the princess fell back onto the bed.

    Please take it slowly.

I feel fine. Fayette attempted to move again, but Mia quickly restrained her, your highness...

Mia, please stop calling me that! she paused, call me Fayette.

Of course,...............Fayette, Mia said, It is a fine day for the queen's banquet. She propped Fayette up again before going over to the wardrobe. Opening the doors she glanced at the rack of dresses. Gazing at an orange and black dress, Mia contemplated it then shook her head, pushing it along the rail. Which one? she said to herself. After looking at a few dresses Mia still couldn't decide which one to choose for the princess. She was about to ask Fayette, when she remembered a dress stored away in the cupboard above the wardrobe. Balancing on a stool, Mia retrieved a clear bag, which held a purple dress.

I think your going to love this, Mia said, enthusiastically. She took the dress out of the bag, placing it up against herself, admiring it in the body length mirror. The strapless dress was made up of three different layers and shades of purple. The bodice was deep aubergine and laced up the front with black ribbon. The calf length skirt flowed out from the bodice at the hip like a four-pointed star, two layers of translucent indigo chiffon and two layers of violet silk. The whole dress was edged with silver and sapphire gems. To finish the outfit off was a wide silver belt patterned with multiple spirals. An amethyst for a clasp held it together.

Your aunty gave this to you? Mia said, holding the dress up to Fayette, How come you never wear it?

I don’t really like it that much, Fayette said, honestly.

Why don't you just try it, it's really pretty, the pixie urged.

Okay, Fayette got up slowly. Taking it steadily and after a few minutes of zipping and lacing Fayette stood in front of the mirror staring at herself.

It's actually not too bad, Fayette said almost to herself. She twirled unsteadily around and asked, So what do you think?

You’ll be the bell of the ball, it fits you perfectly, Mia replied, with a beaming smile and flutter of wings. There was a knock on the door, followed by a voice, can I come in?

Father! Fayette said, rushing to the door, opening it and hugging the king tightly.

Wow! That was a lovely greeting and you look stunning. he said, when she stepped back into the room, I haven't seen that dress before, is it new?

Aunty gave it me for a present.

Ah yes that’s right, I remember the day my sister gave you that, Xaeh said, daydreaming. Seconds later he turned to Mia, Give us a moment.

Certainly your highness, Mia bobbed, saying farewell to Fayette and leaving the room.

Fayette and her father walked out onto a balcony at the end of Fayette's room where they stood briefly in silence. The fresh air hit Fayette making her wobble slightly. She took a deep breath to steady herself, listening to the birds softly singing.

Fayette, the king said, focusing his attention on her, the doctor says you’ve made a miraculous recovery, he paused, how are you feeling? Can you remember anything about last night?

I'm feeling a lot better, but a little tired. I don’t remember much.

That’s okay, what can you remember? Fayette retold the incident, And did you have any visions or dreams? Xaeh asked his violet eyes scanning his daughters face, not wanting to hear the answer he thought might be coming.

There had been a great battle, she said, reliving a fevered dream, A Great Plain, littered with dead bodies. You and Mother were there, a funny old man and the new grounds keeper, she said, a confused frown appearing on her face, I ran to you and mother, but as I approached, you transformed into pink blossom, and blew away on the wind. Fayette began to cry.

It’s alright, Xaeh drew his daughter close, I’m here.

But Father what does it all mean? Fayette asked a little scared.

    That you are growing up.

So it's going to be okay then? What about that dream?

Fayette you were with a fever most of the night. It was probably just that, his thoughts turned to the prophecy, wondering if Fayette's dream was some sort of omen. For now he dismissed it, You are tired, but everything will be fine. Perhaps you should stay in bed rather than come to the banquet, her father said softly.

I want to come. I can already feel my strength returning, Fayette insisted.

Alright, You may attend, but if I see any signs of tiredness, then it will be straight back to bed. Do I make myself clear Fayette?

Yes Father, she replied reaching up and giving her father a kiss, thank you Father.

Good, be ready for seven as the guests will be arriving then.

The King stood silently for a moment, thoughts of war troubling him, and then smiling at his daughter he turned and left leaving Fayette alone. Not noticing her father's serious face, excitement built in the princess for the coming evening. Fayette tore back to her chamber door and called loudly for Mia.

Fayette was rummaging through her jewellery box deciding what would go with her dress, when Mia appeared at the door holding a rose. Fayette cocked her head questioningly to the side, staring in curiosity.

Oh, it’s from Saefh, Mia said, holding out the rose.

    But how? Fayette asked.

Jilka appeared and left it with me while you were talking with your father. Here. She passed Fayette the rose, who smelt it. It smells lovely, Mia will you please put it in the vase?

Yes your high...I mean Fayette, Mia replied with a flutter. Fayette wondered if the rose bush had given Saefh any more cuts when he had acquired it.

There was also a message for you, Mia said handing Fayette a small envelope. Eagerly opening it Fayette read the message.

Saefh has asked for a dance at the banquet tonight, Fayette told Mia, who raised her eyebrows enthusiastically.

    Will you dance with him?

We shall see! But most probably, Fayette laughed.

Fayette took Mia’s hand, and twirled her around the room dancing, it was only when Fayette stumbled that they stopped breathless. They collapsed on a small sofa laughing, enjoying the silly moment.

Come on let’s get you ready, Mia said, getting the jewellery and hairbrushes out. They spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing in Fayette's chamber, the princess wanting to conserve all her energy for the evening's festivities.

As darkness fell, the lanterns were lit down the long castle drive for the arrival of the carriages. Glancing at her fairy clock Fayette saw the time, the guests will be arriving any minute now, she said wandering onto her balcony.

Look! Mia pointed, as they observed carriage lights appear down the driveway, the first carriage is arriving. Fayette and Mia watched a large black carriage roll up the long drive to the castle entrance, pulled by two large blue roan horses donned with purple plumes and blinkers. Somebody stepped out of the carriage. A female fairy, wearing a grey fur coat and a big green hat, followed by a male fairy wearing a tailored suit of grey. Aunty and Salb, Fayette said, watching them enter the pool of light spilling from the castle entrance.

Mia finish helping me or we will be late, Fayette said, sitting on her stool in front of the dressing table.

Mia placed the brush down, picked up some jewelled clips and began pinning the odd bits of Fayette's hair into place. Have you decided on the jewellery? Mia asked.

Yes, I’ll wear my pearl set, Fayette replied. She leant forward opening a small two-door jewellery box and took out a pearl necklace and bracelet.

Mia, please come down when you have changed into your dress.

I don’t have a dress. Mia stared sheepishly at the floor.

Well, we can rectify that easily enough. Look in the wardrobe you will see an orange dress hanging up, Fayette said, quickly now! With a flutter of wings Mia hastily ran to the wardrobe. Yes that's the one. Mia quickly changed into an orange and black dress, which luckily fitted. It covered her leggings and boots, which she was thankful for as they clashed terribly with the dress. Fayette passed her an amber pendant edged with a rare semi precious gemstone, Bixbite. Mia placed it over her head and hung it neatly between her small breasts.

You'll do, Fayette said smiling, Let's go.

They left the chamber racing for the stairs, eager for a glimpse of the arriving guests, slowing only when they came into public view. Linking arms they glided down the stairs catching sight of the banquet hall. Their attention was quickly averted to Fayette’s parents who were standing regally by the entrance door greeting guests as they arrived. Mia quickly let go of Fayette's arm and stepped in line two paces behind her. They made their way quickly over to the King and Queen who turned to greet them. The King and Queen looked splendid in their ball gowns and Fianna, (still wearing red), simply sparkled with delight at seeing Fayette up and about.

You look lovely darling, your father said you were feeling better, just be sensible tonight, her mother warned, she looked at Mia, you also look charming Mia, enjoy the festivities. Fayette your aunty and Salb have just arrived, she paused, did you know they were getting married?

No! I didn’t. I shall go and congratulate them immediately. Come Mia, Fayette said, giving her mother a hug and leaving the queen to greet more arriving guests.

From the castle entrance to the banquet hall, multi-coloured banners hung. Fayette and Mia glanced excitedly at each other as they entered the banquet hall. Upon the ceiling of the banquet hall small Pixies, Fairies and Angels danced and fluttered in tight formations creating fractals of infinite colour and depth making the crowd below ooh and aah in delight. There was a dance floor in the middle of the room with small round tables neatly arranged around the edge. On a dais at the end of the room two thrones sat empty in front of a huge table, awaiting their King and Queen. A band played quietly in the background on a balcony above. The walls glittered with small fairy lights of every colour making the whole room glow and sparkle. Servants busily laid tables with food and drink, occasionally topping up quests glasses. Wow! Mia said, Doesn't it look great. There are so many guests here already. I thought your aunty was the first.

Me too, Fayette replied, looking around, how am I supposed to find her? Mia, you wait here by the door, while I find aunty and I will be back as soon as I can. The large crowd consumed Fayette leaving Mia alone. The room rapidly filled with more guests, squashing Mia further into a corner. Servants rushed every which way with silver trays full to the brim with delicacies and fancy cocktails. Fairies of all sizes, in bright gowns and suits paraded, danced, talked and ate. At the far end of the room a small group of fairies laughed merrily, There she is, Fayette said to herself, squeezing through the crowd, I'd recognise that laugh anywhere. Aunty! Fayette called approaching a fairy wearing a green skirt and jacket. The fairy in green waved Fayette over and embraced her.

Hello, darling! her aunty said, How are you?

Mother just told me your getting married, Fayette said excitedly.

    Yes that’s right!

In the summer, Salb said butting in, placing his arm around the green fairy's shoulder.

Well congratulations, Fayette said hugging her aunty again, How are you Salb? she asked releasing her aunty.

Very happy, he replied smiling and winking at Fayette’s aunty who smiled back.

It's great to see you both, have a lovely time tonight. Please excuse me but I am needed over there, Fayette said pointing to the far corner, I'll see you later.

Yes dear, you go and enjoy yourself.

Fayette walked away from her aunty smiling, and headed back to where she had left Mia, who was feeling very lost and out of place. Mia, not having much experience at banquets and royal occasions marvelled at all the fancy gowns, food and decoration. Finally after much pushing and shoving, which wasn't how Fayette was supposed to behave, she made it back to Mia who was relieved to see her.

Thank goodness, Mia breathed, I was starting to panic.

Come on let's get a table, Fayette said pulling Mia by the arm. They were making their way through the throng towards an empty table when Mia spoke, There he is, she pointed towards the hall doors. Fayette looked up catching sight of Saefh just entering the banquet hall, wearing black breeches, white stockings and black shoes with big gold buckles. He wore an ivory silk waistcoat and a deep blue tailcoat. Fayette bent her head blushing, go and say hello! Mia said, shoving her in Saefh's direction. Saefh caught Fayette's eye and smiled brightly, she smiled back. They walked towards each other, and met at the empty table, hi Fayette said, thank you for my rose. It was very sweet of you.

My pleasure and you both look amazing, Saefh said admiring Fayette and Mia, Oh and Mia I have a surprise for you.

Oh, I love surprises, Mia squeaked.

Good, then cast your eyes to the doorway, Saefh smiled. Mia craned her neck over the crowd to see a young man dressed the same as Saefh standing nervously by the door looking in their direction. Saefh waved him over. As he approached Mia recognized him as one of the stable lads.

Joesph? Mia said, What are you doing here?

I could ask you the same thing, he laughed, Saefh talked me into it. He managed to get these clothes from one of the butler's so here we are, you look lovely by the way.

Thank you, she blushed. They had just started chatting enthusiastically when Xaeh and Fianna glided into the room casting silence over the guests, and stopping the band in mid song. The King and Queen moved through the parting, bowing guests, making their way to the high table at the front of the dance floor. Fianna sat down on her throne before Xaeh spoke, Fayette, he called out, Fayette, he called again, looking out into the crowd, making her blush. Fayette will you please join us, he called again. Everyone turned to look for Fayette, who was already moving through the crowd towards the high table. Saefh never blinked or looked away, transfixed by her.

Let’s wine, dine and dance! Xaeh announced, Let the banquet begin. As he sat down next to the queen, the waiters stepped up their service filling goblets and offering food. A flurry of activity swept around the king, queen, Fayette and other quests at the high table, offering a multitude of delicacies. The band strummed a quiet tune while the quests ate. Fayette sat next to her father, who was leaning across his wife to talk to a brown haired knight, Sir Isicon, who kept glancing and smiling at Fayette. She briefly smiled back at the knight, not forgetting her manners. Fayette found sitting at the table boring and kept looking over at Mia, Saefh and Joseph, who seemed to be thoroughly enjoying them selves. The conversation with the knight ended and Xaeh spoke softly to her, Fayette you are at that age where marriage is becoming important.

Father! Do we have to talk about this now?

That young knight I was talking to has high aspirations, he would make a good husband and I think he likes you, Xaeh said.

"Of course he likes me, I'm a princess," Fayette replied sarcastically.

There is no need to take that tone Fayette, you will have to face this issue soon. We need to secure an heir for the kingdom and safety of our land.

Father please your embarrassing me, I know my duty to the kingdom, she said burying her head in her hands.

And what is wrong with Sir Isicon, is he not handsome or exciting enough. He is one of the royal knights after all. Have you seen his sword skills, he’d be able to protect you. He comes from a strong bloodline Fayette. I would be happy with that union.

Father I have you to protect me, Fayette answered.

    For the time being, yes.

    What does that mean?

We shall discuss that at another time, think on what I have said Fayette for time is running short and....

Darling leave her alone, Fianna said, interrupting Xaeh, this is not the time, let her go and enjoy herself.

Thank you mother, father may I join Mia?

Of course. Fianna would you dance with me? he asked, turning to the queen, who nodded. Xaeh stood giving the band a nod, encouraging them to play louder. The king and queen stepped lightly onto the dance floor followed by many others. There was a lively feel in the air as Fayette joined Mia, and the princess was glad to be away from her father's pressure. The band played a fast jig so Fayette and Mia danced together while Saefh and Joseph looked on. Once the band had finished the song, everybody applauded. A little out of breath Fayette and Mia rejoined Saefh and Joesph at their table.

Are you alright? Mia asked, remember what the doctor said.

Yes, just a little out of breath is all, Fayette replied, I'm fine honestly.

Here, Saefh said, passing her a goblet of water.

Thank you. Fayette sipped the water.

They sat in silence until the next song finished and a different one began, come we should dance, I can manage this one, Saefh said, taking the water out of Fayette’s hands and leading her onto the dance floor followed by Mia and Joesph. Scanning the room Fayette glanced at her parents. Her father had a grimace upon his face and Fianna looked worried. I wish my parents would be happy, Fayette said to Saefh, as they began to dance.

    Aren’t they?

    Do they look happy?

No, I can’t say they do Saefh replied, glancing at the king, why is your father frowning? He spun Fayette. The king and queen watched the pair intently from their thrones.

Who do you think Fayette is dancing with? Fianna asked.

    I’m not sure, Xaeh replied.

He is the new grounds keeper! Sir Isicon said, leaning over.

How do you know this? Fianna asked.

I have seen him with the stable lads, when he’s not working! You hear things, the knight replied.

Thank you Isicon, Xaeh said, turning his attention back to the dancing pair.

He dresses nicely, Fianna said admiring Saefh's outfit, look Fayette is laughing and smiling,

Is that all you care about? Appearances? Xaeh questioned.

No, of course not, I care about Fayette and how she feels!

The music soared to a crescendo as the dancers twirled together in a large group before the band finished the song, and once again everybody applauded.

That was fun, Fayette said, leading Saefh away from the dance floor.

Are you alright? Saefh asked, as Fayette began holding her chest and breathing heavily.

Yes, I’m fine, she sipped some of the water, please excuse me, Fayette said, quickly leaving the hall.

Is she alright? Mia asked rushing back from the dance floor.

Saefh didn’t reply, but hurried after Fayette. Fayette what's wrong? he called, catching up with her in the entrance hall.

I just need some fresh air, I have got a little hot and feel light headed, she breathed.

I will escort you, you must not be out on your own. Together they stepped out into the cool night air, that’s better, Fayette said, breathing deeply.

I can see you like dancing, Saefh said, once Fayette had got her breath.

Yes very much so. They walked around the lawns in silence before Saefh spoke, I am going hunting tomorrow if you would like to join me, and rumour has it you've never been before.

The rumour is true, Fayette laughed, I would love to try it, I don't know why I never have. I'm not sure my parents would approve. They don't approve of most things I do, she laughed again, I am always in trouble, so one more thing won't hurt.

I don't want to upset your parents Fayette, perhaps it's not a good idea.

Don't worry about them I will take care of it.

Great, it will be fun. Meet me in the courtyard for noon, he replied smiling.

Noon, it's a date. It’s getting cold out here, Fayette said shivering. Saefh took off his blue coat, placing it around Fayette's shoulders, thank you.

Do you wish to go back inside? Saefh asked.

Yes, my parents will be wondering where I am.

They returned to the castle entrance where Mia was pacing and Joseph was leaning calmly against a large stone pillar.

Where have you been? Mia cried, Your parents look stormy. If anything had happened to you...

But it didn't, did it, Fayette said, Come on let's get back inside before I am missed too much. They re-entered the banquet hall where the band had started to play a slow piece of music, I love this song, Fayette announced.

Me too! Saefh replied excitedly, Come, let’s dance!

Smiling Fayette shrugged off the coat, reached out her hand, pulling Saefh to the dance floor. Starting in opposite corners of the dance floor Saefh and Fayette took their starting positions. As the music got underway the pair made their way into the centre of the floor, their eyes meeting as they twirled around one another passionately. As the music became faster the pair spun away from each other breathlessly striking a pose. A lull in the music caused for a pause, giving them an opportunity to stare intently into each other's eyes. The flute player twittered softly and Saefh twirled Fayette around a few more times until the flute died down and a drum was struck. Once again they struck a pose. The other fairy guests watched the dance in amazement. Saefh pulled Fayette close to him, leaning her backwards and finishing the dance. Saefh placed Fayette slowly back onto her feet and the pair swayed together blissfully. The guests stood mesmerised for a brief moment, before erupting in applause.

Thank you, Fayette said smiling at everyone, suddenly realising their dance had been the centre of attention, please enjoy the band and dance, she added before leaving the dance floor.

Xaeh scanned the room looking for Fayette, who had been swallowed up in the crowd. Spotting her with Saefh, Joseph and Mia, who were talking and laughing amongst them selves he strode through the crowd towards her.

My father is approaching, Fayette said, as the king drew next to them. Saefh, Joesph and Mia bowed and bobbed low. Fayette smiled brightly at her father.

Are you enjoying the banquet father? she asked trying to deflect the king away from Saefh, who he was glaring at.

Young sir, I thank you for making my daughter laugh and smile, what is your name, Xaeh asked, reaching out his hand to shake Saefh’s.

Saefh sir, I am the new groundskeeper, he bowed again.

I know what your job is young man! Xaeh snapped.

Father, you were just complimenting him....

    Fayette go join your mother.

For a moment she stood there not obeying her father and said, father please don’t. You just said Saefh was making me smile and laugh. Especially after last night. I thought of all fairies you would wish to see me smile.

Fayette, I will not tell you again, Xaeh cut across her. She didn’t move, I am sorry but I will not obey you. This lovely man has placed a smile upon my face!

Fayette! Do not make me ask you again!

Rooted to the spot, with no intention of moving, Fayette spied her mother across the room. The queen's eyes twinkled with admiration and she was smiling, giving Fayette more courage to defy her father.

Excuse me father! The princess kissed Saefh lightly on the cheek, Thank you Saefh, I had a lovely time, and then Fayette left the room, Mia in tow, infuriating Xeah.

Fayette you come back here, he bellowed. Saefh made a hasty retreat before the king could chastise him and quickly followed Fayette out of the ballroom. He knew the king would probably have his job for dancing with the princess and even for just being at the ball. Groundskeepers were never invited to the ball, but he had wanted to dance with Fayette and he decided it had been well worth it.

Fayette wait! he called catching up with her.

Fayette turned around, facing Saefh knowing that her father was watching them from the hall doorway.

Fayette, thank you the last dance was fun. Shall I see you tomorrow? Saefh asked quickly, knowing he only had a few seconds before guards escorted him out. She looked at her father defiantly and turning to Saefh replied loudly, Yes, you shall. Saefh kissed Fayette on both cheeks, "that is how we say goodnight in my Kingdom," he said letting go of her. He darted quickly out of the entrance, heading to the stable house where he lodged.

Mia! Come, Fayette commanded as she lifted her dress and marched towards the staircase.

Watching Fayette flaunt herself in public made Xaeh furious. The king wanted nothing more than to chase after Saefh and make him pack his bags. However he knew this would do no good and Fayette was right, Saefh had made her very happy. Thinking on this he returned to the banquet and to his wife who was waiting for him by the throne. Xaeh apologised to her and then his quests realising he had acted inappropriately. He thought it funny how he chastised Fayette for behaving badly when he was no better.

Several hours past before the banquet finished, but Fayette never left her room.

I thought your father was going to really shout at Saefh, Mia said hanging Fayette’s dress up.

So did I, I can’t believe he did that, and in front of all our guests, Fayette replied, "And he says I behave badly!"

Are you going to see Saefh again?

Yes, tomorrow if father hasn’t banished him from the kingdom. Fayette stood next to the window watching several carriages leave, it looks like the banquet is over. Fayette turned from the window, you know, I wouldn’t blame Saefh if he didn’t want to see me again. It’s understandable after the way father treated him, I wouldn’t want to face the kings wrath, Fayette paused, I would of thought father would of been happy to see me laugh and smile, especially after last night.

Talking of last night, how are you feeling? Mia asked.

I am feeling a little tired, but I had fun, Fayette replied, you know, father tried to talk to me about marriage.

    Oh really.

I was a little embarrassed, Fayette admitted.

    Did he say who?

Yes, he mentioned Sir Isicon, Fayette said, there was a slight pause before they both burst into laughter.

    Is your father serious?

    Yes!

What did you say when he mentioned Sir Isicon?

I told him he was embarrassing me and joined your table, Fayette explained.

    "Surely there is
