Chapter 1
Samuel ignored Dorian's efforts to have him stay calm. Apollo, how could you be so reckless? What were you thinking? She's not some common whore for you to pleasure yourself on! She's our daughter, for Christ sake. You're like a brother to me. Where's your loyalty?
Samuel said accusingly.
How was I to know she'd get pregnant and sprout a child within a single day? Look, I didn't see this coming and I certainly didn't expect Zenya to turn into a woman overnight! You really think I'm prepared to be a father? Did it ever occur to you that I already know I'm irresponsible with shit like this? Hell, I don't even own a pet, for Christ sakes,
Apollo admitted.
Well, now you'll have both,
Ramon added.
Ramon, you're not helping,
Samuel said in a short tone. He poured a glass of whiskey and downed it to steady his nerves.
Dorian stood alongside him. Do you love her?
he asked Apollo.
He was surprised Dorian had asked him. Yes, I feel something deep inside of me,
he revealed.
The only thing deep inside was your dick, asshole,
Sam shot back.
"You know, Sam, I would have figured you of all people to understand what love feels like when you least expect it. If memory serves, you nailed Dorian right here in Drake's office! Did anyone give you shit? No, they didn't, because we put our own feelings aside to support you with all your personal, numerous endeavors! Look where it landed us. I served time for your sorry ass, and this is the thanks I get," he contended.
"Nailed. Really? Samuel reiterated in a harsh tone as he got in his face.
You want game, motherfucker, go ahead and say that again, he said provoking him. Sam was annoyed that Apollo held his position and didn't back away.
So, what did you think, you could sleep with Zenya as payback? Is that what this is about? Money and sex, right? It's all that really matters to you! You're so frigging shallow you make puddles look deep."
Oh, is that right, King Samuel, heir to the throne? Like you haven't been chasing the almighty buck your whole fucking life! I'm not the schmuck who's inherited a castle, subjects, security, a fleet of limos and personal drivers. Look in the mirror—what the hell's your story?
Apollo responded.
Samuel aggressively shoved his shoulder and Apollo rammed him right back. Sam jabbed him with a right hook, busting his lip. Apollo threw his hat and jumped him, knocking Dorian over in the process. They each threw punches, jabbing each other's faces, neither person willing to back down.
Ramon shrieked, "Oh my God, stop it! Are you guys' crazy? You'll kill each other!"
Shelby moved out of harm's way, clutching her belly. Samuel, stop, you're hurting him. You're far too strong now,
she urged, unable to gain his attention. She noticed his wings poking out from under his jacket as it began to fall off his shoulders.
Dorian tried to pull them apart. Samuel, stop, please,
he pleaded, knowing that the stress had elevated his temper.
Samuel let out a loud roar and lifted Apollo off the ground by his neck while Dorian desperately tried to release his grip. Suddenly, a woman's voice sounded with a deafening scream. It startled everyone and it made Samuel promptly release Apollo. Another scream came, even louder this time.
Dorian and Samuel simultaneously ran out of the office shouting, "Zenya!" They leaped over the rail and spotted her below inside the temple.
Apollo nervously raced down the stairs, trying to catch up with them. He approached and found she was on her hands and knees in a solid scream. Oh my God, she's having the baby! What the fuck is going on? How could this be possible?
he said, completely disoriented by the sudden event.
Samuel held his shoulders. Pull it together, Apollo. This is it. You've got to stay focused. Do you hear me? This is fucking serious!
Tears stung Apollo's eyes. He felt hollow. I can't do this without you, man, for real!
he confessed. Sam, please forgive me, I'm frozen in fear.
He looked deep into his eyes with immense pain and sorrow.
Sam met his gaze. There's no turning back now. You're about to become a father. Get your sorry ass over there and help her,
he said, rustling his hair.
Dorian was already trying to assist. Zenya, don't scream. Try to breathe and push it out,
he said, holding up the back of her dress. It's almost here!
Dorian announced, somewhat distressed.
Apollo watched in amazement, seeing the top of its head, and insisted, "Dorian, do something! You've delivered your own children—that makes you the most qualified."
Dorian stared in disbelief and responded, "I hardly think ripping my sister open under demonic influence qualifies me!"
Just then Father Bingham and several members of the clergy entered the temple, having heard the ruckus. What's happening? Can we help?
they all began asking at once.
Samuel acknowledged their concern, saying, Zenya's in labor. Don't we have a nurse on staff, or anyone with experience that can assist?
Father Bingham replied, Yes, of course!
He asked a priest in their group to fetch her, and a female priestess of the order stepped forward.
I have assisted in such matters,
she said, kneeling to try to speak with Zenya. Dear, I'm here to help you. How long have you been in labor?
Dorian watched as Zenya crawled away, moving behind him. Honey, Rev. Meryl won't hurt you. She's trying to help,
he said hoping to console her.
Zenya hissed and clutched her father's legs in fear. It was clear she was not open to perceived strangers.
Dear, this child's coming whether you want it to or not. Let's figure out how we can keep you both safe,
she suggested. She slowly moved closer. Who's the father here?
Her eyes scanned the group, and she noticed that Ramon and Shelby were standing behind Apollo. It became obvious to her that they were both staring at him.
Apollo stepped forward and uttered, I guess I am.
You guess? Could there be another possibility?
she asked, looking at Sam and then Dorian in disgust.
No, it's me, of course. It's all happening so fast,
he replied, seemingly dumbfounded.
Zenya let out a high-pitched scream that sounded as if it could shatter glass. She frantically stood and tore her dress off. She spread her wings and flew to the upper level, directly above the temple.
Apollo ran up the stairs after her, worried sick for her safety. He shouted, "I'm coming, Zenya! Hang on, honey!"
Ms. McGovern, the resident nurse, arrived on the scene, rapidly asking, Where is she? How far apart are the contractions?
She looked toward the ceiling as she heard Zenya's scream echo throughout the temple. She looked startled and said, I had absolutely no idea she was pregnant!
Father Bingham escorted her up the stairs with Rev. Meryl. He filled her in as best he could, although no one had all the answers needed to comprehend exactly what was happening.
Samuel went to retrieve her dress and noticed it move. Ah, Dorian, I think we have a problem,
he alerted. He cautiously reached to pick up Zenya's dress and revealed her offspring. Jesus,
he uttered in astonishment.
Apollo wrapped Zenya in his sport coat and lifted her into his arms as Father Bingham and Rev. Meryl followed him. Apollo shouted, "We're taking her to the infirmary."
Nurse McGovern cautiously instructed Dorian, Grab the baby!
Samuel watched Dorian tuck the premature child into his robe to keep it warm. He escorted him, thinking the situation looked grave for the child. He turned to see Ramon trying to keep Shelby from emotionally falling apart.
Ramon, bring her along and we'll have her looked at by the nurse,
Sam said.
Come on, Shelby, let's go. Maybe she can give you something to calm your nerves,
Ramon said. He tried to escort her along, but she fainted. "Samuel," he shouted, completely terrified.
Samuel came running over, advising Dorian to wait in the aisle for him because his hands were already full holding the newborn. OK, Shel, it's all right. I got you,
he said, lifting her into his arms.
Ramon caught up with Dorian. Is she all right?
he asked, utterly confused, as he walked alongside him.
Dorian answered, I think she fainted. I'm sure she'll be fine.
He'd barely finished getting the words out when he noticed Ramon stumble and clutch one of the dark-stained pews lining the aisle.
I think I'm going to be sick,
he mumbled, hunching over and holding his stomach.
Dorian stopped in his tracks. Ramon, listen to me,
he said, glancing over at him. Shelby needs you to be strong. She could potentially go into labor very soon.
Dorian, I don't think I'm cut out for all this. Childbirth, women's issues—it's beyond my capabilities,
he confessed.
Do you honestly believe any of us are any more prepared than you to contend with all of this?
Dorian asked. The temple grew quiet. The others had left, and Samuel had to go ahead without them.
Ramon replied, No, I understand. I'm sorry. I feel sick. I won't be of any help. I actually might make it worse. Go ahead without me!
Mr. Garcia, I have an extremely sick child tucked inside my robe. I know you're frightened, but your friends need you. I strongly advise that you don't let them down. You really need to do this! Come, walk beside me. I'm right here next to you,
Dorian assured him.
He stood next to Dorian and took a deep breath, still looking weak in the knees. Ramon felt as if it had truly become too much for him to deal with.
Dorian adjusted the child and held out his hand in support. He gazed at him, uncertain he'd take it. It's OK. I don't bite in the daylight,
he said, hoping to encourage him.
Ramon took his hand and walked beside him. How's the baby doing?
he asked in an attempt to direct the attention where it belonged.
I'm uncertain. I don't know much about babies. It looks dark,
he said. They exited the temple and headed across the manor toward the infirmary.
Dark, as in blue, like, not breathing?
he asked, alarmed.
Dorian took another look. Well, no, it's breathing,
he said hesitantly.
Ramon looked inside his robe. Dorian, what in God's name is it? It's extremely tiny. Will it live?
he asked, uncertain what else to say or do.
I'm not sure. It doesn't look promising, does it?
he replied.
Why do you suppose Zenya left it on the floor?
he asked as they arrived at the infirmary.
I'm guessing she didn't know what to do. She's still childlike, having only been in existence here for about five months or so. What were you like at that age, you know? I think we need to be understanding of this,
he said.
Ramon held the door for him and replied, Are you kidding? I'm still liable to go into the fetal position as soon as I find a chair!
Well, it's about time. Bring that baby over here, please,
Nurse McGovern insisted, rolling a hospital-type bassinet toward him.
Dorian thought it looked similar to what he remembered his children being in not too long ago. He felt reluctant
