About this ebook

In the midst of Zack and Kelly’s complicated lives, something evil and dark is brewing in the spiritual realm that co-exists alongside the human one they reside in. A spirit named Ryan is recruiting spiritual energy to completely destroy the barriers that separate the human realm, spiritual realm, and the abyss; a place where the demented, banished spirits have long awaited for their ‘Savior’ to release them into the human realm once again. For Ryan to gain the amount of power it would take to do so, he has to take over Zack’s body completely.
When Kelly finds that Zack has been attacked in his own home by Ryan, she decides to go along with a plan that was concocted by a spirit that has been haunting her for weeks. They decide to banish Ryan from the realm of the living permanently before he gains the power he needs to tear down the barriers, and before the human realm crumbles under the pressure of the excess energy that would be released from the abyss.

    Chapter 1

Kelly was lying in Zack’s muscular arms on the picnic blanket that he had laid out hours ago for lunch; she had fallen asleep while they were watching the stars dance above them in the moonlight. The stars shone just enough to make her small body visible as he watched her chest rise and fall with every breath that she took. The wind blew lightly as it knocked a strand of her bleach-blond hair into her face. Zack reached down and brushed it away being careful to not disturb her, and tucked it behind her ear; that’s when he noticed that she was wearing the gold earrings with a ruby surrounded by diamonds that he had bought her earlier today as a farewell gift. It made him smile at the fact that Kelly had agreed to accept his expensive gift. Normally, she would have gotten mad at him for wasting so much money on her, but today was an exception. Kelly was moving to Cambridge, Massachusetts to attend a Law Graduate program at Milton University tomorrow morning; so Zack had arranged for them to spend the day together, making sure that she had everything she was going to need before she moved away.

They met in grade school, instantly became best friends and have spent almost every waking moment glued to each other’s side since then in the small town of Summerville, Texas. When the other kids on the playground would pick on Zack for being different, though none of them knew exactly why he seemed different to them, Kelly would stick up for him and drag him into all the activities the kids tried to keep him from playing. When other girls bullied Kelly about her increasing acne during her first few months of puberty, Zack was there to pick up the emotional pieces. Every year they would grow closer and closer, then in high school their relationship took a major turn that neither Zack nor Kelly foresaw; after their many years of friendship, feelings had blossomed between the two of them almost overnight during their first school dance.

Both Zack and Kelly back then, found dating overrated and fully believed that it was just another way for someone else to take advantage of you while everyone else looked over it, as it was normal in high school society. Because of their beliefs, neither of them had an official date to the first dance of their high school career. It was break period, five minutes before the bell would ring that signaled it was time for the students to trot into their classrooms for lessons that hardly prepared them for college life, and Zack hurried his way to meet up with Kelly at her locker in the back hallway of the school.

Kelly shut the door to her locker and turned the knob on it in the opposite direction of the last number of the combination as she slung her overweight book-bag over her shoulder. Her black, leather, combat styled boots clicked on the floor as she walked along the glossy tile floor towards her next class when she felt a heavy tug on the strap of her book bag. Before she could spin around to see who it was that had nearly pulled her down, Zack swung his body in front of hers and leaned against the wall to block her from passing.

Hey. He gave her a sly smirk as he crossed his arms in front of his chest.

Kelly smiled up at him for a moment and then proceeded to shove him out of her way. What are you doing on this side of the building? Zack’s classes were scattered all over the school and the one he was supposed to be headed to now, was in the complete opposite direction of where he stood in front of Kelly.

He let his body cave under the small amount of pressure Kelly had used to push him out of the way and then made his way over to her side to walk with her to the classroom. I was hoping I could ask you a question real quick.

She readjusted the bag’s strap on her shoulder before it could slide down her arm then Zack took hold of it and pulled it over his own shoulder which made her stop in the middle of the hallway.

What? she asked, annoyance evident in her voice. Zack always helped Kelly out with everything, so it was understandable to herself, that she would be upset at his gesture. She felt that she was strong enough and highly capable to take care of herself now that they were four years away from graduation.

Zack’s brows furrowed above his eyes in confusion at her sudden change in attitude. Should I just forget it? Cause I can leave you alone if that’s what you’d prefer. He took the strap off his shoulder and dropped the black and grey messenger bag at her feet as he gazed into her emerald green eyes.

Her face went blank when she heard the hurt behind Zack’s voice and instantly regretted her tone, she softened her own voice before she replied. No Zack, what did you want to ask? She dropped her gaze to the bag at her feet and then looked back up to him with a silent plea for help. He recognized it right away, he had seen it many times before today. Zack shot her a sideways glance and stuck his tong out at her in obvious protest as he once again lifted the bag over his shoulder.

When they came within a few feet from the entrance to Kelly’s next class, Zack stopped walking and gently took hold of her hand into his own. She looked down at their hands as they intertwined with one another for only a minute before she brought her eyes to meet Zack’s kind and gentle gaze. She felt the heat rush to her cheeks as they turned a bright red that he had caught a glimpse of before Kelly turned her head away.

When she turned her head away from him he bent over and followed it with his face to try and keep their eyes locked on each other. Kelly, I was hoping you’d say yes to going to the homecoming dance with me. Zack let out a soft snicker as she struggled even more to hide her blushing face.

You mean as a, kind of like a date? she asked softly.

If that’s what will get you to say yes, then yeah. It’ll be kind of like a date.

Kelly laughed and looked down to her boots as she let out another laugh before she turned her now glistening gaze back to Zack. As long as it’s not the kind of date where you tell me what to wear and I won’t make a fuss about my make-up. Oh and how about we leave out the flowers too huh? No boutonniere and no corsage. Zack smiled.

Duh, what did you think this was, and invitation to the dance as boyfriend and girlfriend? As if! They both burst into laughter that brought tears to their eyes.

I’ll meet you here then at 7 o’clock Zackary. Kelly picked her bag up and walked into her classroom as Zack stood in the hall with the bell ringing. Oh crap!

That night Zack arrived at the school a few minutes early and made his way into the gym where the senior student council hung the final decorations on the walls. Though he had promised Kelly he would not bring any flowers into their friendly trip to the dance, he had a bouquet of autumn colored flowers tightly gripped in his hand. He walked around the gym floor in search of the perfect table for him and Kelly to sit at, one that wouldn’t be too surrounded by the other students but also one that wasn’t completely isolated.

He looked around at the many different tables and noticed they each had their own center pieces. Each table was adorned with a silk table cloth in their school colors red and white, and they all had fake diamond studs sprinkled along the table top. On one table to his left the school mascot, a mustang, was the center piece and on another table to his right was a mini score bored with the game scores from one of their winning nights. It was a very clever way to show the football team’s progress as they made their way into the homecoming game that weekend.

As he passed up all the tables in the back of the gym, he came across one that was sort of pushed away from the others that created an imaginary dance floor in the middle of them gym. Perfect, he thought to himself as he placed the bouquet of flowers down in front of one seat and then he left for the snack table.

When he made his way to the table with two cups of the fruit punch and a couple of chocolate chip cookies, students had already begun to file their way into the gym with their high heels and dress shoes clacking on the floor and the loud pop culture music playing in the background.

Hey there stranger. You sure do clean up nice. Kelly called out from behind him.

He handed her the cup of fruit punch that he had not drank out of. You startled me a bit. Zack led her over to the table and hesitantly handed her the bouquet of flowers.

Kelly took them into her hands as she sat her punch on the table before her. I told you no flowers Zackary. She was only upset with him for a few seconds, and then she brought the flowers up to her nose for a big whiff of their scent. They smell good though, she smiled back at him.

I’m glad you like them. Zack smiled back at her. He motioned for Kelly to sit as he pulled her chair out for her.

They spent most of that night talking about anything and everything that would come to their heads. Kelly brought up ‘what if’ moments about their future and made Zack comment on them truthfully. When the DJ announced that the last song of the night would be played and then the students would all have to vacate the gym promptly afterwards, Zack got a sudden surge in his heart to ask Kelly to the dance floor.

Hey Kelly? his voice was small against the slow song in the background. She didn’t hear him so he spoke louder. Kelly, I have a favor to ask of you.

Kelly looked to him, a little startled since he practically screamed into her ear. What’s up?

Dance with me? Zack held out his hand for
