First Day
––––––––
Kellyn woke up to the sound of his alarm clock.
Tick- Tick- RRRRIIIINNNGGG!!
W-what? Morning already?
He spoke to himself.
It was Kellyn’s first day of High School and he had never woken up so early before. This was a new change for him. He hoped today would be the start of something great. His older sister, Kyler, went to the same high school when she was his age. Unfortunately, Kyler wasn’t the perfect example of a good student. Between getting suspended 13 times and always skipping class, she somehow managed to graduate with a diploma for the Felicity Lance High School.
Kellyn jumped out of bed and neatly put his blankets back where he found them the night before. He quickly combed through his fluffy brunette hair and went down the hallway to the kitchen.
I made breakfast sweetheart!
Helen, his mother, said.
Kellyn sat down at the table and placed a giant scoop of oatmeal into his bowl. As he started eating, his sister came downstairs with a giant bag of tortilla chips and salsa.
Why don’t you ever eat normal food like your brother?
Helen asked while handing Kyler a slice of toast with grape jam on top.
Kyler took the slice of toast and ate it all in two bites.
I’m not a big fan of breakfast food. Plus, I start work in about fifteen minutes. No time to eat a big meal.
.
Kyler walked out the front door with her bag of chips and drove to work. The only place that would hire her was a small grocery store called Tomatillo’s. They sold all sorts of Hispanic foods and treats along with the occasional American prices. Every weekend Kellyn would walk up to the store and buy huge bags of tamarind flavored snacks for school the following week. Things are different for Kellyn now. His high school is very strict. No snacks and no sugar. Lunch is strictly pescatarien and if you expect anything besides water as a drink, you are in for a rude awakening.
Once Kellyn finished breakfast he went to his room to get dressed.
What should I wear? I have nothing!
.
He threw on his dirty grey hoodie and ran back downstairs to grab his backpack. The school bus was outside and he was going to miss it. Kellyn ran out the door with one shoe on and the other shoe still in his hand.
Wait! Wait for me!
Kellyn yelled.
He made it onto the bus safely and the driver looked at him in anger.
I do not make exceptions for late students.
He said.
Kellyn quickly found a seat in the very back of the bus and waited for the driver to pull away.
Why aren’t we moving?
Kellyn asked the girl sitting in front of him.
You didn’t pay the driver. Don’t worry, I got you this time.
The girl said, walking up to the front of the bus and giving the driver a five-dollar bill. The girl came back and decided to sit next to Kellyn. Did he already make a friend?
Stacey Vaughn
The girl sitting next to him had a beautiful caramel skin tone and dark brown eyes that matched her curly brunette hair. She wore round silver glasses and small gold hoop earrings that matched her nose ring.
What are you staring at?
She asked Kellyn.
He blinked and then replied, Your freckles. I’ve never seen anyone with freckles before.
.
The girl looked in amazement and gave a small smile.
My name is Stacey. Stacey Vaughn. I’m a senior here at Felicity Lance. I take it you’re a freshman. So is my little sister, Simone. I should probably warn you about the school; everyone has a clique. I’m in with the preps. What are you?
Stacey asked politely.
Kellyn didn’t know how to answer. He wasn’t good at anything. He can’t play sports, he doesn’t like music, and he is definitely not popular.
Oh, I get it. You’re a loser! Just kidding. Everyone fits in somewhere. Once we get to the school, go take a look around and find someone you like. If you need me during the day, I’ll be sitting near the water fountain with my girlfriend, Lilla.
Stacey said, smiling and moving back to her previous seat.
––––––––
Not too long after their conversation, the bus arrived at the school. Everyone got off the bus and went to pick up their schedules from the office.
Name?
The office secretary asked.
Uh, Kellyn Bliss.
Oh boy, If you’re anything like your sister, we’re doomed.
.
The lady handed Kellyn his schedule and he took a quick look. This year he had eight classes instead of his usual six. He read down the list of classes and was excited to see no Spanish class. He loved the culture but could never grasp the language. Stacey walked behind him and grabbed his arm.
I had that class last year! C’mon, I’ll show you the way.
she smiled.
They started walking to his first class, Trigonometry.
You must be awfully smart to make it into a 3rd-year mathematics class. I can barely understand decimals and fractions!
Stacey laughed.
I’m actually not that good at math....or anything in general. I’m just in this class because they ran out of room in the others.
Kellyn replied.
Stacey giggled and stopped once they reached that classroom. She gave Kellyn a quick fist bump and walked off into a sea of people much older than any freshman. These people had nice clothes, fancy shoes, expensive accessories, and flawless skin. These were the preps. Kellyn decided not to let the looks of the most popular clique in school get to him. Instead, he walked into class and took a seat in the back row next to a boy that looked awfully familiar.
Dayton Miles
Hey! Aren’t you a little young to be in this class?
The boy asked with a little eyebrow raise.
Kellyn knew this kid from
