Michael Hetherington L.Ac, BHlthSci, is a qualified acupuncturist, Oriental medicine teacher, and yoga teacher based in Brisbane, Australia. He has been practicing yoga since 2000 and working with Chinese medicine since 2004.     Introduction to Zen

    The word Zen translated into English means something like ‘absorption’ and ‘meditation’ suggesting that Zen is referring to a kind of medative state.

    Zen sprouted up in China in the 6th Century AD. It is thought that the early teachings of Taosim, around 800 years earlier, and teachings from the Mahayana Buddhist tradition from India, laid the foundations for the teachings of Zen to originate.

    The word ‘Zen’ is a Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese word ‘Chan’ which was derived from the Sanskrit word of dhyana. Dhyana refers to a meditative state.

    The unique thing about Zen is that the teachings de-emphasizes the practice of studying and memorizing scripture and instead preferring the simple practices of zazen, or sitting meditation, and contemplation. The teachings and practices of Zen allowed for common people, and not just monks, to be able to reach stages of enlightenment. It was understood that enlightenment was available to all people, at any moment, one just needed the veils of illusion to be removed.
