THE DARKNESS IS INESCAPABLE
WHEN NIGHTMARES HAUNT IN CLEAR DAYLIGHT

The nightmares continue to trouble Darian, but this time they linger even while he’s awake. Whatever darkness that seemed to surround him during the night of the robbery seems to have latched onto him, and there’s no knowing what the next nightmare will bring.

Darian Lane woke up from a comma not remembering how or why he got there. His doctor had to recount stories of the night for him to recall the unfortunate event, and now he has to deal with putting his life back together again. Witnessing a traumatic incident has left deep scars in his memory. What’s worse is that glimpses of the horrible incident come back to him in his dreams.

After suffering multiple gunshots wounds, he is tasked to learn how to walk again with the help of a physical therapist. Darian felt the unmistakable attraction between him and his doctor, Jennifer the moment they met. One thing led to another and they indulged in a steaming tryst right in his hospital bed.

Their moment of lust was unlike any other they have both experienced before. Will their connection lead to something deeper?

What should Darian make of his terrible nightmares?

EXCERPT
The room was pitch-black and Darian couldn’t see his hands in front of his face. He could, however, feel someone standing close to him, watching his every movement, even in the darkness. He wanted to scream out in terror, but he knew that if he did, he would give out his position to whatever was in the room with him.

He stood frozen in fear, shaking uncontrollably. There was a sudden movement next to him and the brush of wind against his right cheek. Suddenly, a whisper broke through the darkness and sounded like a tornado siren in his ear.

“You killed her.”

As quickly as it appeared, the voice was gone. It was so quick that he almost didn’t catch what it said, and then the darkness started to fade away.

Slowly the room began to take on a form as light started to ease into the shadows. Darian looked around to see if he could figure out where he was and saw the familiar surroundings of his hospital room coming into focus. Standing over him was Nurse Jackie and a strange man he had not had the pleasure of meeting yet.

“Darian! Wake up, Darian! Can you hear me?”

Author

G. J. Winters

G.J. Winters “fell into” writing when a well-meaning teacher of his submitted his Creative Writing assignment for publication in the school paper. The local paper picked up the article and asked G.J. for publishing rights, to which the young G.J. agreed with some hesitation, as he felt “that wasn’t one of my best writings at the time.” The reality was that this article was written when G.J. was a junior in high school. The article, which was a fictionalized version of a local myth surrounding a famous abandoned house near a swamp, was an assignment turned in as part of a mid-term exam. The teacher, Miss Mendez, thought G.J.’s writing was “exemplary” and showed “natural, raw writing talent for a person his age." The assignment called for “providing details to a local urban myth – provide background, using a local resident’s POV, and close with a vague hint of authenticity and realism."The story, entitled “The Old Mansion by the Swamp,” appeared in the high school paper as a short story, but was later serialized in the local paper in 6 parts. G.J. added more characters and even a sub-story (which later became a story of its own, “I Was Shirley Massey” – a story which centered on a member of the fictional family who resided in the Massey Mansion in the late 70s and disappeared without a trace). With the success of both of his original series, G.J. thought to venture into writing longer stories, this time with futuristic themes, as he has always been fascinated with travelling through time, future crimes, apocalyptic themes, and stories set in civilizations from the future.G.J. identifies with sci-fi writers such as Isaac Asimov (“Kept me awake through most evenings in college.”) and Margaret Peterson Haddix (“My girlfriend at the time had fits of jealousy over my fanatical tendencies towards this author.”).G.J. holds a degree in Chemistry, is an intern at the R&D division of a pharmaceutical manufacturing company, and lives with girlfriend Deidre, a magazine editor.

    Chapter One

DR. FRANKLIN HAD to deal with a lot of people in the hospital. Being the resident psychologist was a difficult job; at least he thought it was, even if the rest of the doctors felt that he wasn't really doing anything to help.

Sure, there was the occasional patient that needed mental help, but in such a small town, it wasn't something that happened all that often. Usually, he had to deal with the family members when something bad happened during a routine surgery or something. Still, he enjoyed his job and he knew that he was making a difference, whether or not anyone else wanted to admit it.

Franklin looked through his planner to see what was on his agenda for the day. The nurses always looked at him in a funny manner when he pulled his old planner out. Most everyone in the hospital was using some kind of technology to store their notes, but he preferred the feeling of using a pen on paper. He transcribed sessions and flushed out his records on his laptop in the office, but he never had much use for anything else besides his notepad and planner.

Scanning through his appointments, he found that he had a severe gunshot victim that Dr. Sheppard wanted him to see. It seemed that he was having some issues recalling parts of the incident and was a bit too calm for the doctor's liking.

It sounds like Sheppard is trying to test me again. Franklin shook his head at the last incident that Sheppard had thought someone needed help.

A girl had come into the ER with what appeared to be slashed wrists from a suicide attempt, but it turned out, after speaking with her, that she was rollerblading and fell. When she put her hands out to catch herself, there were jagged bits of metal sticking out of the ground and they cut her wrists pretty badly. Her lack of emotion in the ER made Dr. Sheppard think that she was suicidal and needed a consult from him.

Franklin picked up his notepad and headed out the office door to find this Mr. Lane and see if there was anything actually wrong with him or not. He had to do the consult just in case there was something wrong, but he always got a small amount of pleasure out
