Sandra Ross

The moment Sandra Ross held her first romance novel when she was ten, she knew she was going to write romance. At thirty now, a prolific reader and a freelance writer, she's since then expanded her preferences from just romance to romance with a dash of now trending sub-genres—paranormal , fantasy, sci-fi even, and erotica. She loves challenging herself and would write on a dare. On a normal day, she would be found in her herb garden collecting spices for her kitchen or ingredients for her potions; in her huge eclectic Provencal kitchen with the big modern oven cooking pots and pans of food for her family of one husband and three kids (an ardent daughter and two boisterous sons) that'll probably last for weeks; in her library with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and an e-reader in her hands as she reads the latest erotic hit; or scribbling pages upon pages of different erotic lifestyles, searching for the one that feels like it was inspired by just the right mix of passion, story line, and sex. Aside from these activities, the rest of the time she'd be found in front of her laptop typing the latest Sandra Ross concoction for her readers.

    Tempting Liaisons - Sandra Ross

    Chapter One

THE MORNING SUN glowed warmly upon her soft skin as she lie snuggled beside his lean body in her king-sized bed. Lani Culpepper rolled on her side to watch Rick Baldwin's firm chest rise and fall with his breaths as she ran her fingers lightly over his chiseled features, stubbled face and dark brown hair. Rick peeks one hazel eye open and, with a devilish grin, takes her hand to kiss it.

You got me so distracted last night, I almost forgot to tell you, he said softly, his morning voice still thick and dark, I got accepted for that marketing job out in Atlanta. You remember, the exec position that I applied for, just for the hell of it?

Lani's eyes widened with a mixture of pride, surprise and alarm. She and Rick had been dating for going on a year now but Atlanta was about four hours away from her spacious Victorian home here in Savannah. Would they be able to survive a long-distance relationship? Worse yet, would he ask her to move away from the only home she's ever known?

That's great, honey, she piped up tentatively, but what about us? Will you-

Lani, you know I love you. This job won't change anything between us, he leaned over and pressed his lips to hers, engulfing her in a deep, luxurious kiss that melted all of her doubts away. She pulled her head back and sighed.

Good. Now how about some breakfast? she said while playfully nudging him out of bed. He groaned and rolled over, setting one foot at a time on the smooth oak floor. The same floor Lani's parents had once walked when they were alive. Now all she had left of them was Nana and this house. Without Rick in her life, things would get lonely pretty quickly. She shivered and tried to push away the thought while she got dressed.

The tantalizing smell of eggs, mushrooms and bacon wafted in the air as she made her way down the carpeted stairs towards the spacious kitchen. Lani paused in the doorway, appreciating the way her boyfriend's backlit form moved while navigating the stove. His face was all focus and concentration with a pleasant smile dancing about the corners of his eyes. Rick loved cooking almost as much as he loved his job and she enjoyed watching him display his skillful finesse. There was something poetic about the precision of his movements, the way he whistled softly to himself as he bustled around the kitchen, gathering spices. He turned to grab some pepper and spotted her spying on him.

About time you got down here, he said with a boyish grin. She sashayed over to him and wrapped her arms around his waist, I wanted to make sure I looked just right, she whispered into his ear, Before I eat this delectable meal. He twisted around in her arms until he faced her, until she can see clearly the bend in his nose from where he broke it as a boy, his hungry eyes and his salty lips searching her forehead, her lips, her cheek and her neck. His excitement bulged between them and she pulled away with a playfully scolding look.

Now, now. Not until after breakfast, she made her way dreamily to the solid maple table by the yawning bay windows, We wouldn't want the eggs to burn. She winked at him and he groaned, Woman, you'll be the death of me. A tinkling laugh escaped her lips as he finished their omelets and poured their fragrantly steaming coffee. Rick sat down heavily on the antique wooden chair across from Lani and began his meal. The whole house just seemed more alive with Rick here and Lani recalled with an ache the yawning emptiness of years spent in the grand mansion without her parents. Between mouthfuls, Rick shot her a look of concern.

Is everything all right? he asked tentatively.

She stopped poking at her omelet and broke off a choice piece with her fork, Yeah, I'm fine.

He didn't buy it. Rick set down his fork and reached across the table to take her hand, Then why do you look like you've got a load on your mind?

She laughed, partly to ease the tension, partly to rustle up the courage to be level with him, I just keep thinking about how empty the house was after my parents died. And I feel like with this new job, I mean it's really great that you get this opportunity but, she swallowed a lump in her throat, I don't want to lose you too.

    There, I said it.

He smirked at her and raised her hand to his cheek, putting on his best southern gentleman's drawl, Well, darlin' I'll be home every weekend. Right back here in your arms, and with that, he planted a light kiss on the back of her palm. Weekends. It seemed a reasonable compromise. She blushed at him, relieved.

    Chapter Two

SHE SNAPPED AWAKE, clutching the white linen covers tightly, her heart thudding wildly in her ears, her breathing quick and panicked, her skin flushed and her throat dry. A nightmare. She rolled over in bed to find emptiness where he should be. Where was Rick? She tossed off the blankets, petrified and scrambled for her cell phone. The movement jogged her memory and she paused as it sunk in. Today was his first day of work in Atlanta. She shuddered, breathed a sigh of relief and shot him a text, Had a nightmare. Miss you. <3

She showered to calm her nerves and soothe her fevered skin. When she emerged and got dressed in her business attire, a crisp baby blue pantsuit, her cell phone chirped and flashed Rick's name. A wave of relief washed over her. He replied. No nightmares allowed, silly duck. ;) Miss you, too. <3

Lani made her way down to the kitchen and, after some serious internal debate, elected to eat a bowl of cereal for breakfast. Rick certainly spoiled her. After a few bland spoonfuls of breakfast, she decided that next time, she'll eat out for breakfast. She stepped out into the sunshine, locked the house behind her, and began making her way to the shop. Another benefit of living in Savannah, she noted. Everything downtown is pretty much within walking distance. No cars need apply.

After she strolled several blocks underneath sidewalks lined with majestic oak trees draped in Spanish moss, she saw the familiar sign. The family business she inherited was a quaint boutique bookstore called Quills and Thrills on the corner of East Liberty and Price Streets near Troup Square. Set on the first floor of a cream yellow historic colonial house that her ancestors once owned, it attracted quite a few tourists, local artists, college students and the occasional hipster. In addition to selling books, they had a small gourmet cafe featuring fair trade organic coffee and hosted an open mic poetry reading every Tuesday night. As the owner, she also did her best to connect with local authors and offer them lecture and book signing opportunities, a practice which her Nana began long before Lani was born.

Although it wasn't necessary for Lani to be at the shop all day, she welcomed the distraction. Sarah Finstein, a cute red-headed art student that Lani hired a few months ago, was already sprucing up the cafe counter when Lani walked in.

Oh, good morning, Ms. Culpepper, she piped up cheerfully, Saw a batch of Girl Scouts milling around earlier. Maybe a few might stop by today. It wasn't unusual to see entire flocks of Girl Scouts from all over the country ambling around Savannah to visit the
