Non-lethal dependence
Mick was staring into space while listening carefully to the thick voice from the phone. News were bad indeed. Did he still have that pile of money he hid a few months ago? In his room there was an ordered mess
, as he loved to call it. He knew were each thing was, even if it was under the pile of clothes or under the desk, but this time he just couldn’t find the money. He could feel the panic softly installing in his nape and for good reason. You can’t fuel an addiction without money. It was a vicious circle, short and painful. He started to throw clothes in the air, maybe the money was there, searching in the pockets of his blue jeans, but soon his options were reduced to zero. Now he was standing on the couch, scanning the room as an ancient king who was enjoying his vast empire. He was trying to measure his options but they were very few. Right at that moment his father came in the room.
"My God Mick! I told you so many times to tidy your room. It looks like a pigsty."
"Dad, just leave me alone. I have no time to hear your endless preaching. I’m looking for something very important."
"Well, perhaps if your room was clean, you could find that thing faster. What are you looking for, exactly? Can I help you?"
"Uhm…nothing important. Hey, if you still want to help, would you lend me some money?"
"Haha, nice try, son. But you know how things work. If you want money to spend, you have to gain them all by yourself. I don’t want you when you’ll grow up to…"
Mick was no longer hearing his father. He was already trying to find other options. But who could help him if not his best friend?
David was also hidden in his semi-dark room, like any teenager who faced the same problem as Mick. The two stood in the position of the famous thinker, seeking a viable solution. "So, I can give you just only that much, David said pointing to the two bills in his hand,
but until next month, when the next shipment comes. This is all I have."
"Yeah, you were lucky to have money for this month. I couldn’t come up with anything", Mick starred into the void.
"Well this is what happens when you want all types. I told you, focus only on a single type and stay with it until you change it." David started to be a little frustrated by the situation and it was clear that his anger problems were not in the past. The fact that he raised his voice annoyed Mick.
"Look, David, I don’t want anything from you if you are making a big deal about it!"
"Gimme a break, dude. You came for help, I didn’t ask why. It’s not my fault that you can’t take care of your money and you buy all the crap. Besides you go out every night with your weird friends to drink and hang out with your girlfriend."
"Oh yeah? At least I have friends. You don’t even talk to girls on Facebook. You’re a loser!" Mick yelled and went off from David’s room like a tornado.
"What an idiot", said David to himself.
Mick was becoming more and more desperate, walking on the streets whispering, his eyes looking down. He looked up from
