    Chapter One

All of those past events had brought Archie Hamilton to this point of sitting in a cabin at Blue Mounds on that Saturday in November, 1979. He had waited for Angela Carter Chase for many a long and desperate moment.

There was no Madeline. There was no Lawrence. There was only Angela. And, for that reality, a single tear was brought to the eye of a man drowning in love's lake.

Having left that red shoulder bag on a chair, Angela began to empty out it's contents onto the kitchen table. Wanting Larry to have some of the comforts of their home, five pictures of this couple were placed around that sparsely decorated cabin. One item she'd treasured was placed onto an oak coffee table around ten minutes to ten.

A silver chest of under twelve inches in length had it's top left slightly open. Inside, Angie smiled at a letter that Larry wrote her when they were dating. Never known by his wife as a knave of golden quill, Chase realized a simple gift could bring the greatest reward. In that man's case, it was Angela's love.

A few moments passed ten that morning; she made her way into the kitchen. Hoping manager Moss had left a fully stocked cabin; Angela flicked the overhead light above the kitchen table on. Looking inside the fridge, it was bare and dark without a light bulb. She flipped open six cabinets to find something to eat, tinge of unease began to set in.

All Angela Chase could find was a box of eight packages of peanut butter and cheese crackers. That childhood treat of hers would have to satisfy an adult appetite for this Saturday.

When going to retrieve her husband from Sacred Heart the next day, Angela would have to make a trip to restock that barren kitchen. This cabin didn't even have candles.

Putting her mind at ease for a short spell was a stream of sunshine throughout that location. At least Angela had made sure there was a generator out in back of that cabin.

Tossing that snack box onto a kitchen counter, she returned to the living room and unpacked those boxes of clothes and other supplies.

11:30 rolled around quickly, as Mrs. Chase called Sacred Heart Hospital to ask about her husband's condition. She is the one that receives a surprise that Saturday, as Larry has had a telephone placed inside his room. For the first time since Lawrence's malady, he was able to have a modest conversation over the phone.

Angela also has a surprise for him, and that she was working on it right that moment. Since Larry's progressing in his recovery, he is quite cheered up at hearing that interesting news. In fact, Chase wants Angie to know he'll be released Sunday afternoon, instead of Monday.

Since it is a day earlier than she'd planned for, Angela beamed at the thought of them being alone at their special place all the sooner.

Finished talking with Larry, she begins to fix up the cabin as much as possible. When finishing up this light decorating for that afternoon, a call to Edward Longfellow was made that Saturday. At 4:30, Angela wants to know of any progress on that ballistics report.

Fears of lady justice's finger tapping onto Lawrence Chase's wary shoulders came to pass, as Eddie told her it would be completed within the next twenty-four hours.

Angela Chase's late afternoon was winding down with this depressing news coming from an old mentor's lips, while another person's anxiety slowly ascended in the dusk of Blue Mounds.

From across the way, Archie Hamilton is looking at her though binoculars when she walks upstairs to change out of those clothes. He slips out of his cabin and towards the generator behind hers. Fiddling with that power supply slightly, it would be unable to work when Chase made any attempt to start it up later.

Hearing Angela moving a table from one section of that upstairs bedroom, Archie took care of another problem. Volvo's radio knobs had been twisted beyond being operational. Next time the driver would try to pick up any news or weather information, only a scratchy buzzing sound would come through the car speakers.

Sunlight's glare fades to night's darkness, as Angela Chase tried to start that generator. Finding that it's incapable of working, she is drawn to a lighted cabin next door to hers for assistance.

Sweater of evergreen clung onto thighs over a pair of olive pants, as Angela knocked on that cabin's door at 6:45. This resident of Eau Claire had delight on those cheeks in seeing a friendly face in the middle of nowhere.

Angela's mouth was agape with a hint of joy at seeing the occupant of that cabin, Archie, what are you doing here?

Hamilton smiled at his visitor of that evening, I'm here with the family, acting as if he was mutually surprised to see her as she was him.

Seeing all of the comforts of a cozy household, Chase briefly looked beyond Archie, Oh, I didn't want to intrude. But, could I possibly borrow some candles?

Concern came from his being to her, Are you okay, Angela?

Well, my cabin, Angela twisted head towards where she was staying and added to him, The generator is not working, sense of a sigh came about, And, it's barely a bite of food over there.

Listen, gentle grin formed on Archie's face, as he played the part of a helpful Samaritan, Come inside, and get out of that night air.

So, um, where's Maddy and the boys? not coming inside fully, Angela looked around from standing in the doorway.

Lie was cast into the waters of this conversation, Well, a friend is dropping them off in the morning, Hamilton happily made this offer to a wayward woman with an encroaching appetite, I'm just about to sit down to dinner. Why don't you stay?

That's the best offer I've had all day, Angela's cheeks gave off a glow of alleviation from loneliness and an empty stomach, happily accepting this hospitality, I'd love to have dinner with you, Archie.

Just hearing Angie's jovial reply, was more than enough to set Archie Hamilton on that future road to revealing submerged feelings, Great, um, just make yourself comfortable, turning back to this dinner guest and beginning to walk towards that cluttered kitchen.

In that open doorway, Chase was about to come inside that cabin when a ringing telephone caught her ear from the location next door, Archie, I have to go.

Why? coming out of that kitchen with a pot top in one hand and a large wooden spoon in the other, Archie expressed heightened concern over her leaving him right then, "Angela?'

Phone's ringing, allaying his fears, she smiled, I'll be right back, as soon as I finish, okay? hoping this dinner offer was still available to her.

Sure, you come back soon, Angie, not giving this female any cause for his nervous edge, Archie Hamilton returned to that facade of an easygoing booster.

Angela Chase waved farewell and returned to her cabin quite quickly. On the other end of that phone, Lawrence said goodnight to his wife.

His voice was all she needed to hear to put her mind at ease.

Hamilton's door was left unlocked, as his guest twisted the knob and entered. Angela watched Archie setting plates down at the kitchen table, when he greeted her, Hope everything's alright, waving hand over to Chase, Please, sit down, holding chair out for this dinner companion.

Well, aren't you the gentleman, sitting and gazing up at him, Thank you.

Making himself comfortable also, Hamilton was seated and shook his head, Well, thanks. Enjoy it.

Rustic stew of beef, carrots, potatoes, radishes, and peppers was the main course. As for dessert, there sat a ceramic bowl of apple cobbler on a counter cooling off.

Her gushing over a spouse's progress overshadowed Angela's charming compliments on that meal's grand aromas. Hamilton sat there nibbling on that stew, while hearing this wife going on and on about how good Chase was doing.

Just glad he could be with her, Archie didn't mind this lengthy monologue from this married woman. That occurred until latter moments in their consumption of this stew.

So, Maddy and the boys are coming tomorrow? Angela asked about three persons who weren't sharing this fine supper with them.

Yep, a friend of mind dropping them off and they'll be hiking a bit while here, chewing chunk of potato and carrot at a moderate pace, Hamilton's lie drifted once more.

Well, when they arrive, Angie nibbled on a small cube of beef, while finishing up her sentence, I won't be here.

Puzzlement came over Archie's face, as she made that statement, Oh, why is that?

Angie chirped, I'm picking Larry up tomorrow morning from the hospital, placing fork down and taking a sip of white cranberry juice, while smiling with glee.

Tomorrow? Archie's body tensed up, as internal surprise overtook him, I didn't realize it would be so soon that he'd be released, thinking he'd have more time alone with Angie.

It's as much a surprise to me, also, noticing that shocked reaction from this host, she sipped that juice and placed the glass onto that table, Sunday is going to be a perfect day, wishing that next day would come like Jesse Owens at the Olympics.

Archie couldn't let the veil down to her yet, as he lifted his glass of juice, Here's to surprises, and tapping liquid container to hers.

Chase replied in kind with a glow about her, And, to all that makes us happy.

Yes, calmly replying to a woman who hadn't a clue of what he had planned for them, Life is all about happiness, Archie Hamilton sipped and gave a gentle wink to her.

This hopeful wife didn't know what the future would hold for her and a healing husband. But, one thing for certain was that Lawrence Chase held the heart of Angela Carter forever, Happiness is all that matters, taking a large gulp of that sweet liquid.

Beginning to dig into that apple cobbler that Archie had brought along his journey there to Blue Mounds, small talk was made.

Unlike a meatball rolled between two canines in Disney's Lady and The Tramp, a pearl of hidden passion was gingerly pushed from Archie's heart to the woman he loved.

Angela, we've got plenty of room here. Why don't you stay here tonight, Archie Hamilton made a proposal to this friend, who'd held his heart.

She smiled, yet wasn't completely comfortable in barging in on the lives of the Hamilton's, No, Archie. I don't want to outstay my welcome and push myself on you and Madeline, teeth glistened, as Angela declined.

Hearing his wife's name coming from Angela Chase's lips, Archie reverted into a shell of secrecy, Listen, I understand that. Hey, why don't you and Larry have dinner here on Sunday.

Chase accepted that offer, That sounds great. I better get back to my cabin, she walked towards the door and turned the knob, while looking back at
