There’s that damn howling again. Carrie wondered, not for the first time, if she was losing her mind. The stress of her job was wearing her down at work and now all the tension was following her home. She felt eyes on her when she climbed out of the subway, eyes on her when she walked back and forth from the grocery store, eyes on her especially when she jogged in the park. And the howling. At first she thought it was someone’s dog, but her neighbors, who reported every little noise complaint, had heard nothing of the sort.

She rolled over in her bed, sweaty beneath her thin sheets. On top of everything else, the city was in the middle of a heat wave, and her little window air conditioner couldn’t seem to keep her little Brooklyn apartment at a comfortable temperature. She suspected they’d turned down the electricity to the building, giving the machine less power to cool her room than it needed. With brownouts being reported in all the boroughs, she knew she shouldn’t be surprised.

Another howl. That’s it. I’m going crazy. Something has snapped in my brain. She writhed beneath the sheets. And I’ve been single for way too long.

She was inexplicably turned on. Was it her body searching for any release it could find for all the anxiety building within her? She'd been single for almost two years, and thought she was past the point where she missed the sex. Maybe the stress is messing with my hormones. It didn't matter. She couldn't stop the howling or change the climate, but she could at least relieve the needy throbbing between her legs.

With a sigh of defeat, she rolled over and pulled her nightstand
