Chapter One
Why Believe?
Comforted by the smell of fresh lumber and the sound of the constant pounding of my father’s hammer or the buzzing of his saw, I sat quietly and watched him work away at his worktable in the backyard. With my eyes closed, I could easily picture the long wooden table (which he called his workbench) and its contents. Sawdust and woodchips littered the surface of the table; the various tools of the trade stored in the trench-like pocket at the side of the table; and stacks of freshly shaved lumber under the bench were all familiar fixtures of this workspace. This place was my most favorite to hang out with my Dad.
My father was not a carpenter by trade; however, carpentry was his most favorite pass time. The workbench served as a work space for his many creations, and also as a homework center and ‘hang-out spot’ for me. Sitting on the stool, opposite him, countless homework assignments were completed, and numerous books were read. The old bench and the finished products that evolved there, all hold many exciting and precious memories for me. When I think of my Dad, I also think of that old work space.
I was in awe at the things that took shape in that creative space; pieces of wood evolved into finished products which all eventually found an abiding place somewhere in our house for everyday use. Sometimes I guessed my way through the creative process; this was an exciting pass time for me.
Is it a spice rack Daddy?
No
he answered. So I would guess again.
I know, I know. It’s a chair!
No. Guess again.
I would watch closely each time as the hammer fell, just to make sure he didn’t hit his thumb, and I would cringe when the hammer landed too close. Then I would cry for him if he missed the nail and hit his thumb. Nevertheless, I watched and watched, and guessed and guessed. Sometimes he was done in a couple of hours, or in a week or two. Bigger projects would take months to finish. No matter how long they took, my Dad always said It’s important to finish what you’ve started.
Sometimes I made things on the workbench too. I made miniature stuff for my dolls from the scraps of wood left-over from a project. My projects were crude and often poorly assembled, but my Dad always thought they were beautiful; the same way my Mom held on to his projects even though some of them were falling apart. He would help when he could to make my projects better. He made me see that I could accomplish whatever I set my mind to. I believed in myself just by watching him.
Then there were days when we weren’t at the workbench but instead we lounged on the sofa in front of the TV for our quality ‘quiet’ time of soccer watching and screaming on top of our lungs Goal!
right along with the commentator. Our screaming and shouting were usually rewarded with my Mom popping her head in the living room to see which team scored, Manchester was her favorite, and then she was gone in a flash to continue with her
