About this ebook

This is a small book intended to stimulate further discussion. It opens with a short piece describing eternity as related to death.
The church is often attacked for being small-minded. This is because, .like most of us, it lives in a small box of assumptions about the world created mainly by theologians and Freudian psychologists who taught that we are all the same and that everyone operates from motives of self-gratification. We need to escape from this into a universe which is beyond our comprehension in its immensity and beauty as well as in the spontaneity of love and the vast potential loving energy of the human heart. Based on over eighty years of the author’s life experience, the book was prompted by Don MacGregor’s ‘Blue Sky God’ which reveals new scientific understanding about the nature of reality.
‘Omega God ‘looks forward rather than back and suggests that God IS LOVE rather than some external being. Observing how everyone comes to help in a disaster suggests that fundamentally we all care about each other and this is confirmed by mystical (unitive) experiences,
Jesus the Christ was born a man rather than the ‘son of God’. He became a more highly evolved human being.. We need to look at the myth of the virgin birth both from this point of view and because of the damage it has done to women throughout the last two thousand years. A more likely scenario of the conception and birth of Jesus is suggested.
Love is the key to evolution and we need to explore especially the phenomenon of ‘falling in love’, what the author calls ‘Inspirational Love’, spiritual discipline (including meditation), unitive consciousness and Christ consciousness. How does love grow in communities.?Although it is possible to experience briefly the full potential of love we are not yet big enough to live on this level for any length of time although this may become a reality in the future as we evolve into a whole new way of being. This is likely to come about as we show the love of Christ in the world in the sense of Theresa of Avila's “Christ has no body here on earth but ours.” Not everyone may be capable of this and it is probably for those who have been loved themselves to take on the responsibility of joining with others to create a new world.
This is happening on the internet through organisations such as ‘The Shift’, ‘The Peace Alliance’,‘Humanity’s Team’ and many more. It is also happening on the local level as people join to create a ‘Transition Town’ or join a sponsored run in aid of a cause about which they care. Already many in our churches are involved in feeding the hungry, caring for the marginalised and much more. But there is still a tendency in church services to be more concerned about our own pilgrimage to heaven, asking for forgiveness on the assumption that we can do nothing whereas we could be rejoicing in the Christ-given energy of love to take part in creating a new heaven and a new earth. Unfortunately the church has focused on worshipping Christ the man rather than emulating his behaviour .The church is dying but the phoenix could yet emerge if Christians realise that they can play a part in evolving humanity
Up to now human progress has been based on the intellect (the Tree of Knowledge.?) Emotional growth is only just beginning as women find their authenticity(the Tree of Life?)

"I have always been interested in exploring the relationship between the Love urged on us by Christ and the experience of falling in love (I have fallen in love six times during my life) and have talked to many other people about their experiences. When I was fifty I encountered the writings of Teilhard de Chardin with his prophecy that humanity was on the verge of an evolutionary leap and since then have been trying to understand what this could mean. Now in my old age I offer the fruits of my experience in “Omega God”. I hope that it may encourage further exploration.I was born in 1900 into a Methodist family. My father was headmaster of a boys junior school. I went to an Anglican school and for the time before Oxford Entrance lived in a boys school where my uncle was headmaster. I studied philosophy (& politics & economics) at St Anne's where my tutor was Iris Murdoch. While at Oxford I did a variety of temporary jobs to extend my experience of life and afterwards did a statistical job in hospital consultancy. Then I taught English in Finland and in an Italian Convent. Although I had originally felt that because I had a vocation I should be celibate my mother pointed out that a vocation can be equally lived out in marriage.I later married and had four children, two boys and two girls. My husband was a diplomat and this gave me the opportunity to learn about other cultures and to have friends from other faiths. Since retirement I have been part of retreats which enabled an exploration of life experience and recently have been attending a United Church in Dorchester (UK)"

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

    TIME / ETERNITY

Angelus Silesius says The soul has two eyes. One looks at time passing and the other sends forth its gaze into eternity.

Time is not an easy subject to contemplate. Some civilisations such as the Mayan and the Babylonian perceived time as circular. Our Judaeo-Christian civilisation sees it as linear, with a past, present and future. If the idea of eternity is considered at all it is connected with a future in heaven. But this clearly makes no sense at all. Eternity must inevitably involve NOW. We talk about the beginning of the world coming from infinity but at once we want to ask But what was before the big bang? or What happens after the end of the world? We cannot escape from this mental trap. Some have even said that ‘Time’ is just a mental construct to avoid everything happening at once. But as humanity evolves it seems essential to try and get a grip on the idea of eternity.

We are all aware of ‘Timeless Moments’ which involve a time of deep relationship with another person - or music or an experience of the beauty of nature often including an awareness of unity with the whole world. Such experiences give meaning to life.

When someone in a close relationship dies we need to feel eternity in meditation and revisit our memories of such a time rather than move in linear time and long for a time in the future after death when we think we might see them again in heaven. If we can find no solace from such remembrance then healing can be found in sharing with another person (thus also creating another relationship with eternal significance).

This suggests to me that the next stage of evolution for humanity not only involves a greater capacity to love, to understand our emotions more fully, to combine creatively but also enables us to overcome one of our last great mental blockages, - that of time itself. In such a new way of being we could say this daily prayer translated and adapted from the Sanskrit’:

Look to this day for it is Life -The very Life of Life

In its brief span lie all the truths and realities of existence.

The joy of growth, the splendour of action, the energy of love.

For yesterday is but a memory And tomorrow is but a dream

    But today well lived

Makes every yesterday a memory of happiness

and every tomorrow a dream of hope.

Look well therefore to this day…

    INTRODUCTION

"One day when we have mastered the winds, the waves and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love, then for the second time in the history of the world, we shall have discovered fire" ~ Pierre Teilhard de Chardin
