THE Colonel’s son, after convalescing from measles back in London with a nanny, joined his parents at the fort.
They’ve invited you to play,
said Charlie’s mum, because you’re the only boy near his age. Watch your manners.
Charlie skipped up the hill to the Colonel’s house, army-built but on a more salubrious scale to those in Married Quarters. It had a large garden with flowering shrubs, while a bowl of stone on a pedestal encouraged birds to bathe and play. This was the sort of garden Charlie enjoyed. His own was little more than a backyard of gravel that grew weeds better than any of the flowers attempted by his parents.
As for the Colonel’s son, he surely must own lots of expensive toys because the army gave colonels a higher wage than it did staff-sergeants, who according to dad knew more but got paid less.
