    The brutalities of the Apartheid system in South Africa are well documented. What is less celebrated is Mandela’s magnanimity. Few people have made sacrifices on behalf of others, less where they should have hated. Nelson Mandela was the exception. The worst punishment we may subject our enemies to, is unconditional forgiveness

    I used to hate people who had wronged me, until I met a man who had better reason to hate than myself. I met Nelson Mandela shortly after his release from jail where he had languished on and off for over forty-years. I expected Mandela to be engulfed in the flames of hate. Literally swimming in it. Spitting fire. Cursing his jailers and vowing revenge at all costs. After all, it was the most natural thing to do.

    As we sat down to talk, I eagerly looked for traces of hate and bitterness in him. I anxiously waited to hear this man say what a terrible thing the Boers had done to him in his own land. Brutally squandering the best years of his life behind bars. That the only crime he had ever committed was fighting for the freedom of his people—including his jailers. When we deny others their freedom, we guarantee our own captivity.

    Never had it occurred to white settlers in South Africa that they were just as much prisoners of the very system they had created. I waited in vain as Mandela showed no bitterness towards the Boers. Instead, I was the one seething with anger towards his jailers. I was the one contemplating joining the ANC to help complete the job by driving those incorrigible sinners into the sea.

    But Mandela disarmed me with his contagious charm and free spirit. What a lesson I
