    There's one thing you need to understand. John Levin is not my dad, he's my step-dad. Not that there was anything wrong with John. My biological dad was a true loser and I was happy when Mom through him out of the house. I didn't even think John was that bad a choice – given some of the men she dated, she certainly could have done worse.

    It's just that as a young girl I'd gotten a bad view of men, and I didn't think I needed another one in my life. So I would be respectful when I had to be around him, pay him common courtesies when we were in public, and happily took his money when it came time to go off to college and I needed tuition.

    So you could say we had a strained relationship and not be far off the mark. Mom would occasionally comment that I seemed distant, but didn't seem to be too bothered by it. She seemed more concerned by the run of boyfriends I had during college. As I said, I wasn't particularly interested in men... except for when I occasionally felt like a flesh
