About this ebook

The e-book follows the author's theme "How to Navigate the Social Security Disability Bureaucracy". The publication presents a 40-year perspective from an executive manager. The e-book project has two general objectives and three specific objectives. In general, the author seeks to help new filers "Establish Realistic Expectations" and to teach them the "Rules of the Game" when it comes to dealing with the Social Security disability institution. Specifically, the publication provides an instructive orientation on the SSA disability program so that an individual can secure early approval of his/her claim; avoid the backlogged SSA appeals system; and save thousands of dollars in representative fees.

    About the Author

    Fred began his 30-year career with SSA in 1971, as a GS-5 ($5,600/year) field office claims representative — a position that involved taking and processing applications from the public for Retirement, Survivors, Medicare, Black Lung and Disability benefits. At that time virtually all SSA contact with the public was face-to-face and was before the advent of on-line filing, telephone filing, etc.

    Over the next three decades, Fred occupied a number of positions at all levels and components of SSA including, but not limited to:

    * Field Representative;

    * Senior Hearings and Appeals Analyst (with the Appeals Council);

    * Regional Management Officer in Atlanta and Philadelphia (with the then-designated Office of Hearings and Appeals);

    * Field Management Officer (with the SSA Office of the Chief Administrative Law Judge);

    * Executive Assistant to the Atlanta Chairman, Federal Executive Board;

    * Liaison with the White House (Office of the Vice-President) and Justice Department for the 1996 Olympic Readiness initiative;

    * Executive Assistant to the SSA Atlanta Regional Commissioner; and,

    * Loaned Executive to former President Carter and The Atlanta Project.

    As a GS-15 for ten years during his career, Fred occupied an SSA executive level position, and as such had direct dealings with Commissioners, Members of Congress, and public advocacy groups. He was also a designated mentor for the SSA Executive Development program.

    During the early 1970's while with the Appeals Council Senior Analyst corps, Fred was part of a handful of colleagues chosen for temporary tours of duty to hearing offices around the country. The purpose was two-fold: 1) to write opinions and provide technical support for new Administrative Law Judges and back-logged experienced Judges; and 2) to provide justification that the pending Chief Judge proposal to hire permanent attorney advisors in support of Judges at the
