    About the Author

    Dedication

I would like to take the time to dedicate this book to the following people. Without their help and support, this book would not be possible.

First, to my father, for his willingness to let me interview him for this project. There was some doubt at first. But I reassured him it all would be worth it later.

Second, I also want to take the time to thank Xlibris, my new publisher, a branch of Random House, for sticking by me, waiting to hear when I was ready to submit my manuscript. With all the computer and medical problems I had, they were there for me. Thank you.

Along with my husband, Richard, for his support and for taking the time to go with me to do the research at libraries and bookstores and the Colonial Restaurant, I say thank-you. To my nice new computer, so I got to finish my book before it got sent out, I also say thank-you. I also want to acknowledge the last few months with my medical problems; Richard did the last few photographs for this book, and it was appreciated and quite good.

Also, here’s a special acknowledgment to a dear aunt who, before she died, wanted to have a copy of my first book. And she got it and was so pleased. I am only sorry she is gone now, so she cannot see the second one. So here is to her, and I hope she is watching me how this next book turns out. I miss her very much. Her photograph sits on our coffee table with my first book, watching me.

Finally, to the last persons whose names are kept confidential. But they mean a lot to me. They have truly been a great support in all I have done and continue doing. I am truly grateful I met them, and they are a part of my world today. They gave me their honest opinion, and I took action upon myself what I felt was best. I liked the idea more and more, and so as the saying goes, here it is. It’s for all the world to read, and I hope all will enjoy this as much as I had fun writing it.

    Introduction

To begin this book, I wanted it to be different from the other books out in the market pertaining to the pharmacy field. Most of the books I have read and viewed were books that were either reference only, or some history was in it, but nothing that stood out to me. I decided to make my book different to stand out and be unique. I wanted this book to be educational for all age-groups, including future pharmacists, to learn from.

The first half of this book will be about the early history, focusing on the Arabs, English, French, and finally the Germans. All these people played an important role in getting our pharmacy field going how it is today. We would not have the things we have today if it were not for these groups of people.

In the second half of the book, I will focus on our modern-day pharmacies. I will talk about the difference between small and large pharmacies and mention two big, giant well-known stores: Walgreens and CVS, being the top two companies in the pharmacy field. I will talk about Walgreens and how it got the ball rolling, leading us to others that followed and how successful they are today. Next, I will talk about the soda fountain and how this has become a success and an icon that has followed many businesses ahead in different variation forms in the world today—restaurants in particular.
