Preface
I have always been interested in the field of medicine. Although I was not interested in practicing medicine, I had always imagined having a career that was respected and directly involved in the latest medical advances. I also wanted a dynamic career that provided a high level of job satisfaction, global prospects, the opportunity to travel, significant autonomy, and financial rewards, as well as one that was in demand. When I began my career in the pharmaceutical industry in 2000, I found exactly what I was looking for in the Medical Science Liaison (MSL) role.
Prior to starting my career in the pharmaceutical industry, I was working in academia and had never heard of a Medical Science Liaison. Upon researching and learning about the profession, I decided it was exactly the career I had always wanted. Although I didn’t have any contacts within the pharmaceutical industry or the MSL profession, I was determined to break into my first role utilizing drive and a lot of persistence. As I learned about the requirements for the position at various companies and the hiring preferences of individual MSL managers, I discovered specific techniques and developed effective strategies that enabled me to break into the MSL profession!
Throughout my pharmaceutical career, I used many of these same techniques and strategies to successfully progress from an MSL into MSL leadership, which included leading MSL teams and operations in over sixty countries and regions across the United States, Canada, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, New Zealand, and Australia. As a hiring manager, I also observed the techniques and strategies utilized by numerous successful aspiring MSLs from various academic and professional backgrounds.
In the first edition of this book, I shared all the techniques and strategies I developed during my career, as well as those I observed from successful aspiring MSLs. To date, the first edition of my book has helped launch the careers of hundreds of MSLs around the world and received hundreds of positive reviews from those who used the book to successfully break into their first MSL role.
Since the first edition was published, and while leading the Medical Science Liaison Society, I have gained unique insights into the hiring preferences of hundreds of MSL leaders from numerous companies, as well as additional insights into the specific techniques and strategies utilized by successful MSLs. As a result, I decided to update The Medical Science Liaison Career Guide: How to Break into Your First Role to share these additional insights and valuable information.
This new edition includes substantially more content regarding what it takes to break into the competitive MSL profession, including numerous new sections, several expanded sections, multiple updated templates, two new appendices, over sixty updated links, and ninety-five new tables revealing the results from several global surveys related to MSL hiring practices and other relevant information. Much of the data presented throughout this book has never been previously published.
My goal for writing the second edition of this book was the same as the first edition: to provide you with the tools, techniques, and strategies you need to compete and successfully break into this dynamic, rewarding profession.
Introduction
A Medical Science Liaison career provides substantial financial rewards, numerous benefits, professional growth, autonomy, and a high level of job satisfaction. As a result, MSL roles are highly sought after, and as you may have discovered, breaking into the MSL profession is very competitive! However, credible information on how to break in is scarce; thus, the MSL career remains elusive to many.
Even with the appropriate academic and professional background, breaking into the MSL profession can be a long, rigorous, and highly frustrating endeavor. It’s nearly impossible to achieve on your own without the proper preparation and insights into the MSL hiring process.
So, how do you begin a career as an MSL? The Medical Science Liaison Career Guide: How to Break into Your First Role answers this elusive question! No other book provides a step-by-step guide on how to break into the MSL profession. Throughout this book, I will share strategies for distinguishing yourself from other applicants, including the secrets of how to successfully search for, apply for, interview for, and ultimately break into your first MSL role. I will also reveal the hiring preferences of MSL managers, as well as the most common reasons managers reject applicants throughout the hiring process.
Although MSLs are employed at multiple types of companies, including pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, medical diagnostic, and other healthcare companies, the techniques I provide throughout this book can and should be utilized when researching, applying for, and interviewing for an MSL role at any company.
This book is divided into three parts designed to prepare you for each stage of the MSL hiring process.
