Planning Your Prep

By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

A few years ago, I went through a forum and read a post that went like this. 'Hi Everyone, I'm new here. I'm an IMG and I graduated 8 years ago. I am scheduled to take Step 1 in 5 months. What do I do now? Please help.' I remember thinking that this guy is in very deep trouble and I would not want to be in his shoes. This shows how unprepared he was for this exam. Before you even sign up for the exam, you need to know how you would tackle this exam, how long a prep time you would probably need to insure you would at least pass or better yet get a good score.

If you go through the forums, you will be surprised at how many people would jump into this exam without knowing what they are getting into. They think that going through First Aid a few times and wham, they're ready to pass what is probably the toughest medical board exam in the world. Worse, some even expect to get a 99 as if by magic. It requires you to consider your present capability and circumstances, how much time you need to achieve a level of competence to pass this exam and if you are desirous of getting a high score, how much additional time you need to do what is needed to achieve the desired score. Therefore to properly schedule your prep you need to know your capacity to learn, what your current situation is and what results
