    Foreword

I have long since said the most difficult thing I ever had to write was my children’s book Darrel and The Moon Balloon. I poured for hours over the smallest little rhyme – questions flooding my brain at every turn. Things like would a five year old understand this and is there not a better rhyme to help this make more sense and so on and so forth. I rewrote Darrel a million times before I got to the final draft.

For a twenty page story, that was a lot of hard work for me. But in all honesty it pales in comparison to writing a sequel to Bloodhound – the book you have in your little digital paws right now, Broken Wings.

Firstly, the circumstances I found myself in were not ideal – we packed up and moved ourselves to Germany – then we moved back to South Africa, then I changed jobs a couple of times – moved to Cape Town, moved back to Pretoria and now we are on our way to London. Not the most conducive environment to knuckling down and writing.

Added to that, the first draft of what was supposed to be the Sequel ended up in the bin halfway through. I was just not happy with it.

I felt like I was forcing myself to write something in a style that I just did not enjoy in order to make up word count.

Now, if you know a bit about the publishing industry, you know that a lot of books on the market can get to the point of their story in twenty-five thousand words or less. But the Publishing companies cannot sell a book that thin for a premium price – so a lot of writers have to ‘pad’ their books with nonsensicals in order to make their word count as high as possible. I was forcing myself down the same route, but as said, I found that this was not for me – primarily as I never had the intention of submitting Dixie’s story to a publishing house in the first place and I have no interest in selling physical copies – it is a digital world out there baby and
