About this ebook

"Where do you get your ideas?" A simple question, but when you blink and find yourself crouching in the Martian dust, or staggering under the weight of new-found wings, the answers are far from simple.

    ---

It’s cold out here. That shouldn’t be possible.

The sun’s so bright. Brighter than on Earth. At the base of the mountain, I can see farmers, scratching away at the red dirt with their long tools. They’re tall, these Martians. Skinny. I can’t tell what color they are; the sunlight leaves nothing but dark silhouettes.

None of this is real, of course. It’s not even original. If I think too hard, I can see how it’s made of clichés. Too much Bradbury, too many science fiction movies. I suspect, if I walked down there, they’d look remarkably like Grays.

    I’m still cold.

I don’t know what would happen if I walked down there. If I stood up, left the rust-stained dust and scrubby violet vegetation (purple’s the prevalent color of the plants here, much like green on Earth), and followed the winding trail to the bottom. If I said, Hello.

    I don’t know if they’d understand me. I don’t know if I could leave.
