"I do not aspire to be the next great writer, a la Chaucer, Steinbeck, or T'Plana-Hath. Doctor, wait here a moment. I have some last minute adjustments to make to your entry protocol, and I’ll be right back.
I’m not going anywhere,
said David.
The captain walked down the corridor and disappeared around the left corner. To the doctor’s right stood two large metallic doors with an electronic sign which flashed NO ENTRY
in red letters. He turned away from the sealed entrance and debated leaving.
I can’t believe this, can’t believe this, can’t believe this,
he muttered to himself. His hands trembled from a mixture of anticipatory awe and fear. He pushed his hands into his pockets to try to control the shaking. I’m about to come face-to-face with what they think is an angel! This can’t be happening to me!
Across the passageway, a panel of one-way glass stretched the length of the hallway. David surmised there must be guards behind it monitoring everyone who walked anywhere near the forbidden doors. He walked over to the glass and considered his tired eyes in the mirror-like reflection.
I can’t stand this,
he muttered. I’m a psychologist who is talking to himself in front of a piece of glass while others are watching me. God I’m about to lose it. Got to remain calm. Stay calm. Relax,
he whispered, as he tried to control his rapid breathing.
He ran his fingers along beard stubble which revealed the length of time since a razor blade last met his face. His wife admired the half-shaven look. She always said a five o-clock shadow made him ruggedly handsome, like an outdoorsman. The wedding band on his left ring finger reminded him of how much he missed her.
Whatever the military contractors encountered was important enough to be locked away for either its safety or theirs–he wasn’t sure which. His intuition told him they were afraid of the thing, but getting to the what and why of that had become a tiresome exercise.
He peered closer at his reflection, and a sensation of déjà vu passed through him. A memory from years ago, almost forgotten, resurfaced. No, he told himself. This cannot be happening. It’s been a long journey to get here, but...when did everything begin?
For the previous three hours, he had been sitting in a conference room one level up with the captain, the colonel, and other military and contract personnel. The discussion produced no answers as to why the doctor had
