Ronald Bell ran back into the house through the front door. On the verge of exploding into uncontrollable sobs, his face was wet with tears. He grabbed his youngest son, who was already a large young man for seventeen, by the arm.
Don’t you let your mother out of the house! Do you understand me, son? I mean it!
Sure, Dad...okay. What’s wrong? What’s going on?
said Saul.
Ron?
his wife, Yvonne, called from upstairs. I don’t think Sam is up here.
Don’t let her outside,
he warned his son again. Ronald ran back out through the front door and turned right toward the back of the house.
Always one to be respectful of his parents, Saul wondered how he would keep his mother inside the house without physically restraining her. He also wondered where his older brother was and what was wrong with his father who displayed an obvious state of panic.

Ronald Bell learned to accept that his eldest son, Samuel, struggled every day of his life to maintain a sense of equilibrium. The second and third grade teachers claimed the boy was an intelligent child who often became distracted and prone to bouts of fury. Ronald and his wife Yvonne, at first in denial after the principal’s recommendation that they have their son checked for hormonal imbalances, finally complied. To their surprise, eight-year-old Samuel required several medications to calm a continuous storm which dominated their son’s thought processes.
After three months over the summer trying to adjust the prescriptions to a stable level, Samuel passed by his father in the living room one Saturday morning. Ronald lowered his newspaper.
Whatcha got there, Sam?
I dug up some more daffodils from the greenhouse for Mom.
