How To Kiss - Erin Agutter

    Why Do We Kiss?

I wonder what fool it was that first invented kissing – Jonathan Swift

No one really knows who first invented kissing. The best guess made by evolutionary biologists is that our ancient ancestors started kissing as it was the quickest way to learn about the health of a potential mate. Even today to a canny observer, the tastes and scents of a kiss reveals a lot about a person’s hygiene and likely health. As we evolved the kiss was able to reveal even more, including the kisser’s likely intentions and aspects of his or her personality. Is the kiss soft and pleasurable or is it too rough? Is the kisser selfish or giving? Can the kisser enjoy the moment or is he or she rushing to get through it? All this and more can be revealed through this most basic action, the kiss.

Human beings are not alone in kissing either. How does the song go? Bees do it, birds do it, even educated … well, that’s actually for something else, but it could be applied to the kiss as well. Amorous elephants have been known to intertwine and slide their trunks together whereas some fish have been known to lock lips for hours. World-renowned anthropologist Jane Goodell has observed our closet cousins, the chimpanzees, sharing kisses just like we do. The same evolutionary processes that led us to kiss are likely at work here too.
