I’m really not in the mood to be baking cupcakes, Madison.
However, after this statement I still walked over to the counter and sank into one of the high chairs. I had worked four nights in a row, including the weekend, at my job with the university’s residence security. It was one of the highest paid jobs on campus, but the hours really sucked; usually I had to work until four in the morning on the weekends.
It’s Valentine’s Day, Hana! You have to help me bake them for the event my club is having,
my roommate said as she started tossing various ingredients in front of me. Madison was part of the campus programming club, which was in charge of putting on events for all the undergraduates to enjoy. They were the ones who did movie nights on Fridays, semesterly concerts, and other holiday themed parties. Madison was also very into baking although that was connected with her magical abilities. Apparently students learned how to hone their sorcery with cooking.
In contrast, I had no idea what the can of ‘shortening’ I had picked up was meant to do. I’m not sure how useful I’ll be in this process.
She saw me put down the can and scoffed. Baking is not hard. Don’t tell me you’re one of those super anti-Valentine’s Day people.
With hands on her hips, Madison mock-glared at me with dark brown eyes.
N-no. Valentine’s Day is great despite the fact it’s a commercial holiday. I don’t have a problem with people who celebrate it. I just don’t really care either way.
I stood up, ready to leave and continued, Besides. I’m really tired from working and still have homework to do. I can’t use magic to just get it done.
I would have immediately escaped to the comfort of our shared room, but Madison moved too quickly. Planting herself in front of me, she crossed her arms. Hana Lee. You are a workaholic who does not know how to enjoy herself and take a break. I know you actually finished most of your work the other day. And you know that I’m not allowed to do that sort of magic anyway. I do my homework on a regular computer like you.
It was true. I knew this weekend was going to be intense so I had tried finish all my homework early. I also knew that this conversation was going to end with me baking. Madison and I were the only ones in the four-person dorm.
I don’t think I knew any other first year who worked as much as I did. It was just I had barely managed to pay the tuition and I couldn’t rely on my parents for any help--not that they didn’t want to. Money was just tight in my
