Back in the late 1940s, Valentine’s Day was an important event at Public School 164 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Thanks to our mothers and teachers, every classroom had a party.
There was also a valentine mailbox where we dropped our homemade or inexpensive five-anddime store-bought cards.
I especially remember our fifth-grade party.
Several mothers had baked big heart-shaped cookies with pink icing. Other mothers provided grape juice and paper cups.
