About this ebook

Alexandra tells everyone she's a witch, but she'd rather nobody knew she was for sure. Most people buying love potions from her don't need a spell; they just need an excuse. And real love spells, she tells her friend Rob, often turn out badly: if it wasn't fated to be, there's always a price.

But she likes Rob enough that when she drunkenly reveals her secret to him and he begs her to make him a love potion to win the heart of his newest crush, Caroline, she can be talked into it. Also for a price...

    The Love Potion

So you really are a real witch, huh?

Alexandra put down her scotch. She liked Rob a lot, and getting drunk with him and listening to him wax poetical about the latest girl he was pining over had seemed like a hoot when she was goading him into it. But she was starting to wonder if she'd been thinking with a part of her that was dreaming of a very different sort of bad idea. And it was already turning out to be a bad idea.

Levitating his mai tai was definitely a bad idea.

Rob wonderingly plucked it out of the air, and took another sip. He smacked his lips, as if testing to be sure it still tasted the same. Wow. I'm sorry I ever doubted you!

Alexandra closed her eyes, and rubbed them with her fingers. "Don't be. I don't actually want people to know. Please don't spread it around. I'm going to blame the alcohol for my doing that, and if anybody asks, I'm going to tell them it made you hallucinate."

"But... I thought you wanted people to think you could do magic?"

"I want people to think it. I don't want them to know it. If they knew for sure it was real, they'd be a lot pickier about the results from the love potions I sell them."

I thought you told me the love potions were all placebos?

They are. That's what I mean.

Wait, wait. But you can do real magic... but you only sell people placebo love potions? Why don't you sell them real ones?

Alexandra looked at him, sighed, and downed the rest of her drink. Slowly, she reached across the coffee table for the bottle, refilled her glass, and leaned back into the overstuffed cushions of her raggedy sofa, smoothing her mid-back-length hair, pink in its current incarnation, behind her. Staring into her refilled drink glass, she held it up until the amber liquid caught the room's light in a fine point. Customer satisfaction is much lower with real love potions.

    How's that?

She turned and looked him in the eyes. His distressingly innocent blue eyes, set off by long dark lashes she'd always envied, were certainly not helping. She buried thoughts of how much fun it would be to ruin that innocence. "Think of it this way. A love spell is trying to force a relationship
