What sort of loophole? Hadyn said. He joined the wise ones at the large glass table with a sculpture made from glowing crystals in the center.

Steel beamed a sharp-toothed smile that deepened the wrinkles on his bald grey head. Simple! A subject has to create a requisite amount of sculptures as per the contract. If Levi doesn’t make his eight works of art then the curse can never be carried out on him.

Hadyn blinked a few times while casting a droll stare over Steel. Pioche put his face in his hand in his seat beside him.

Obviously. He tried to slow the build-up of his anger. Mortals are compelled against their wills to perform their end of the agreement. They have no choice.

Electra piped up quickly, as though trying to save Steel’s revelation. Of course, of course! But all Levi has to do is remain hidden here.

Then the curse goes to his brother, whom I’ve agreed to protect.

Nonsense, Steel said. You’re going to carry out Levi’s contractual obligation on his behalf and fake his death.

Hadyn stared at him. "If I pretend to die disguised as Levi, Darius won’t get any power.
