Chapter One

Griffith McCallister sped around the turn on Ranch Road 2222, holding tight to the side of the road. He probably should not be going so fast, considering he didn’t really know his rental car that well yet. Not like he’d understood his Mustang at home. But the little Prius the rental agency had convinced him to upgrade to had a real kick to it, more than he would have expected. Energy-efficient cars had not been created for their ability to get from zero to sixty in the blink of an eye.

He pushed down on the gas. The hills were steep, which made sense considering he’d arrived in the part of Austin, Texas referred to as Hill Country. It seemed only fitting he should see some actual hills.

Sighing, he took a moment to admire the views laid out before him. He’d never been to Austin before but he could see already why so many people talked about how much they loved the city. He didn’t waste time dwelling on fanciful musings, not when so much reality required his constant attention, but the moment he’d stepped out of the airport, he’d felt the energy of the city enter through his pores.

Relax.

Griffith shook his head. He’d come to work. His clients wouldn’t exactly appreciate him soaking up some local flavor, at least not on their dime, or before he’d brought them back their property.

Pharmaceutical companies weren’t known for their patience and goodwill toward mankind. Not when the bottom line happened to be in danger. Zenith-42 had been stolen, and it needed to be returned to its rightful owners before its patent could be filed fraudulently. His clients expected him to deliver the drug back to them. Why shouldn’t they? He’d always managed it in the past.

If people only knew how many things nearly went askew in the drug industry on a daily basis….

His GPS beeped at him, indicating he’d almost reached his location. He’d need to turn in about 500 feet. Great. It had been an easy enough drive. Now he’d get the information he needed about the location of Dr. Victor Cruz and be on his way. All he required to accomplish this small feat was
