The knock still echoes in my mind to this day. I can see the young man standing at my door, his face both grave and innocent, the wind whipping through his sandy brown hair. Your husband didn’t make it, m’lady, he said to me. The storm took him.

No...no, you’re wrong, I mumbled. He’s lost, that’s all. He’ll be back.

But looking into his eyes, something burst inside me. I reached for the door, trying to shut out both the messenger and his awful message with one motion, but I swooned and fell before my hand reached the handle.

That was twenty-seven years ago. I never remarried, and in many ways, I am still unable to shut that door.
