About this ebook

Conquer the fear of public speaking!
How?
Read this book.
I have gone from being mute with fear at my first audition to a confident actor singer speaker and teacher. You can too. This book has all the short cuts.
I was locked into the ‘fear of fear itself cycle’ but gradually found ways to break free. My journey has taken 30 years but now armed with what works (and what doesn’t) I have compiled an easy to use ‘way through’ for anyone wanting vocal clarity in public situations.
I have included only the exercises and tactics that worked for me which are easy to understand and implement
‘Speak Up’ is a personal account of my struggle with stage fright and is an easy entertaining read.

    CHAPTER 1

    INTRODUCTION

What this book will not do, dear reader, is turn you into a brilliant actor, speaker or singer. What it will do is remove the fear you have of doing those things.

You see I did it back to front. Because I badly wanted to perform I studied singing and speech and gained diplomas in both. My reasoning conscious brain determined that if I knew lots about the mechanics of the voice I would therefore feel confident in using it in public. Wrong! So my next step was to delve headlong into self-development to find the magic bullet. Wrong again. The answer is a mixture of the two.

I do not regret any of the knowledge I have absorbed over the years (as my dear old Nanna used to say 'No knowledge is ever wasted') but the 30-year journey I took is not necessary for you. If you want to develop your voice by all means find a vocal coach but for overcoming the fear that stops you, this book has the answers. It will allow you to be as brilliant as you can be.

I am sharing with you the path to triumph

    About Me

I entered the audition room. There was a woman at the piano that smiled in welcome. I remember the hall was awash with sunlight and I even remember the dust particles floating in the air but I don't recall smiling back as I was frozen with fear. She cordially enquired if I had been in a musical before and then asked me to sing happy birthday. I remember trying and feeling surprised, amidst the mind numbing panic, that I couldn't make a sound. Not a sound! The surprise was quickly swamped with embarrassment and deep shame. The nice lady said they would be
