A Choice
Emily and Johnny Holmes sat in doctor’s office nervously waiting for the doctor. They had gotten a phone call from Dr. Jean Clinton saying that she needs to see the both of them immediately. Emily was almost five months pregnant with their first child. It' hadn’t been a typical pregnancy, between still having morning sickness, instead of weight gain, she was losing weight, Emily was afraid that she was going to lose the baby she has come to love.
I wish the doctor would hurry up already.
Emily said nervously as she bounced her leg which she did whenever she was nervous or scared. Johnny placed his big strong hands on her leg.
She will be here soon, probably just had to deliver a baby.
Johnny reassured her
What if there is something wrong?
Emily asked nervously looking down at her small baby bump. Johnny lifted her chin up and stared in her brown eyes. Johnny has been in loved with Emily since the day she saw her. She was a sophomore and he was a junior when they both took the same Spanish class.
Whatever it is, we’ll get though it together.
Johnny promised as he took his wife’s hand and brought it to his lips. The door open and the doctor walked in.
Sorry for keeping you waiting, my last appointment ran late.
Dr Clinton apologized as she entered the room.
What did the test results say
Emily blurted out, before the doctor could sit at her desk. The doctor could barely look at the young couple. She knew that they would have to make a difficult choice.
I’m sorry to report but the biopsy showed that you do in fact have cervical cancer. And it’s my recommend that since you’re in the early stages of your pregnancy that you terminate it.
Terminate?
Emily shrieked
The sooner we start treatment, the better chances of your survival.
The doctor answered.
I’m not going to kill my baby!
Emily screamed. Never!
Emily ran out of the doctor’s office. Tears were running down her face as she ran away. She couldn’t imagine taking her baby’s life to save her own. She couldn’t and she wouldn’t.
Awhile later, Johnny found Emily sitting in the car. Tears flowed down her face, as she stared at her sonogram.
Please, please don’t ask me to kill our baby.
Emily begged. Holding back tears, Johnny leaned over and wiped the tears away. He then out his hand on her growing stomach. He didn’t want to lose his unborn child. He already so many hopes and dream for him. They didn’t know the sex of the baby, but Johnny was pretty sure it was a boy. He had visions of a boy, who had dark brown wavy hair like his own, with chocolate brown eyes like Emily’s. He would have long legs like both his parents and play basketball like Johnny did. Johnny looked over to Emily again. His Emily, his beautiful wife, his soul mate. He didn’t want to lose her either. He couldn’t bear life without her. As he sat in the car next to the love of his life, Johnny felt the baby kick for the first time.
Did you feel that?
Emily questioned That is a life inside of me. A baby, our baby, please don’t ask me to give that up because I won’t.
Johnny grabbed and hugged her. When he released Emily, the tears he had held back came flooding down his cheek.
I don’t want to lose our baby.
Johnny cried But I can’t lose you either.
You won’t Johnny.
Emily promised as she hugged her husband. As they sat in the car, husband and wife held each other and cried.
Life and Death
Johnny was sitting in the hospital room rocking his
