Watching my daughter running around the garden of her grandparents, I frowned.

As Emily ran, she would fling her left leg out like she was in a lot of pain.

She hasn’t complained, I thought. I haven’t seen her fall.

‘She must have fallen over,’ my ex partner’s mum Joan, now 84, said, coming over to join me.

‘But I’ve been watching her all day,’ I replied. ‘I haven’t seen her hurt herself.’

‘Well, she must have done something,’ Joan concluded.
