    The Bichon-Frise’s long history begins with being bred and developed as a companion dog. Their diminutive size made them very easy to transport and they could accompany their owners just about anywhere. Add to this the fact that they did not shed and were always of a very engaging temperament and it is all that is needed for a great boat dog and carriage traveling companion. The Bichon is used to having companions themselves and will always expect and require a good amount of personal attention to stay healthy. It is for this reason that the Bichon is at its best when participating in the showring.

    Bichons are a regular sight in conformation shows and are usually seen winning one competition after another. Bichons trained for competition are often done so from a very early age. Their intelligence in addition to a natural proclivity for showing off makes them a constant center of attention in many events. The social Bichon rarely becomes intimidated while in the ring like other breeds; rather, they seem to be able to soak in the experience. The breed was long favored by royalty and aristocrats and a regal air is still very much present in the Bichon. In the ring, when the Bichon is shown in its standard lion's mane cut, that regal air is even easier to observe.
