Introduction:
With the loss of his Fiancée Jack felt empty. Life seemed meaningless without Amanda. This leads Jack to take unnecessary risks. He focuses on stopping all enemies that threaten the United States and its allies.
The CIA has Jack exactly where they want him. But the Russian’s have other ideas. They will use a proxy country to cause havoc on the west like never before, to collapse the free market system and prepare there Arab allies to destroy Israel.
Jack finds himself in a malaise of deceit, not knowing who he can trust. Sara Johnston, CIA field agent assigned to gain Jacks trust knows Jack is working beyond his limits to near exhaustion.
Russia cuts off the gas and oil supply to Europe and transports lethal surface to surface missiles to Iran and Syria. The missiles are handed over to Ishmaels Warriors. Israel releases the information to the US and Jack is once again assigned to foil their plot. But little does Jack know there is an inside informant passing information back to the Russian’s and he is caught in a trap.
Ishmaels Warriors unleash a volley of missiles on Tel Aviv with deadly accuracy. Israel prepares an attack on Lebanon, Iran and Syria. The US President tries to stop Israel for fear of an all-out Middle East war.

Chapter One

Hostile Intent

Hilton Hotel, Arlington

Jack stands alone on his balcony and gazes at the sunrise. A new day of torment. It`s been two years since Amanda was killed. Jack remembers vividly that sunny day in Hawaii when he heard the news about Amanda Miles, Jack`s Fiancé. All seemed to be going so well for them. It just didn`t make sense. He remembers Amanda`s laugh and her smile. Holding her close in his arms was a time when the world stood still. Now filling that void with work. Even after killing many top terrorists, Govt. leaders, Generals, we seem no closer to solving world problems.

Jacks’ mobile vibrates….

Jack! It`s Bernard. Morning buddy you`re up early?

Couldn`t sleep Bernard. I`m still thinking about her. She permeates my every thought.

Jack, I know it`s hard but Amanda would want you to carry on and live life to its fullest.

That’s not possible without her.

Silent pause.

Well Sara is on her way to pick you up for breakfast and brief you on the latest developments.

I`m not hungry.

Well Sara doesn`t take no for an answer Jack, so clean yourself up and get ready. I`ll catch you at Langley.

Without a word Jack hangs up. Bernard is worried about him and wonders if he should have ordered Amanda killed.

Knock! Knock!

Coming!

Sara Johnston was one savvy CIA agent. She was also very beautiful. Tall, fit and manicured to perfection. Long blonde hair and piercing blue eyes.

Jack, good morning. I hope you are hungry?

Good morning, Sara. I could do with a coffee.

Coffee! Well, that won`t do, lets head on down to Dan & Brads and get some bacon, eggs, hash browns, orange juice and then finish with a coffee? Sara has a wide smile which emphasizes her pearly white teeth and full lips.

Jack just stares at her with no expression. He follows Sara to the restaurant in the Hotel.

Well Jack, I’m a little worried you are over doing it?

Don`t be. I’m fine.

I believe Bernard told you I was going to brief you this morning?

That’s right. What`s this screwed up world doing now that requires my attention?

Sara knows Jack is hurting and wants to comfort him, but that wouldn`t be appropriate at this time so she continues with the briefing.

She hands Jack a sealed A4 envelope.

Jack, the Russians know who you are and what you can do. They know you can morph into anyone at any time. I guess this was coming. They are testing the waters to see how far they can go before we react. Meaning they have upped the ante big time.

How so?

They are threatening to cut off the Oil and Gas to Europe.

That’s just plain dumb. They would lose so much revenue it just doesn`t make any sense.

I guess they are so pissed at us they just don`t care. The President is talking to the new Russian President Joseph Krakov in the hope of diverting this catastrophe.

What`s the worst-case scenario?

Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Germany, Croatia and Turkey will be first hit, as the gas will stop pumping through the Ukraine. Secondary effects will be Britain, France etc. Gas prices will soar, people will freeze, old and the very young will die without warmth this winter. The US is not immune. If prices rise in Europe and anarchy starts the US will be hit with less exports, higher prices and the trickle-down effect continues through every economic sector."

Do we know of any breakthrough with the President?

No not yet. We`ll know more when we get to HQ.

Then let’s roll.

They enter the front doors of the CIA. The front desk officer greets them:

Good morning Mr. Sanders, Ms. Johnston. Mr. Roth is expecting you both.

They take the elevator to the 6th floor, passing through security checks and layered doors. They knock and walk into Bernard Roth’s office.

Jack, Sara, take a seat. Can I get you coffee?

I`ll take a shot of coffee Bernard. What’s this I hear about the Russians wanting to cut of the Oil and Gas to Europe?

Well Jack it’s complicated. See, the Russians are pissed at us taking down Ishmaels Warriors, Muslim brotherhood in New York and interfering in their internal issues, let alone their proxy countries that they support. They want to show us they still hold a super power status.

So they freeze out Europe?

Well at this stage it’s a threat nothing more. They say the Ukrainians are stealing revenue through syphoning gas. Don`t ask me how they do it but that’s what the Russians are saying.

Ok Bernard what`s the mission?

Become the Russian President and find out his intentions and report back. Nothing more. Easy mission for you Jack.

What about Sara?

I`ll be here as your back up Jack. You`ll always have radio contact with me. If you suspect anything un-toward then get out as fast as you can. The Russians know we`ll make a move with you at some stage and I fear they may be setting a trap.

She is right Jack. Be careful.

I`ve been in dangerous situations before and this is a synch. Don`t sweat it.

Jack prepares to morph into the Russian President, Joseph Krakov. He cannot get Amanda out of his mind.

Jack, you look tired. When you get back take a few days off. Rest up.

Thanks Bernard I may just do that. I haven`t been sleeping lately.

Amanda?

Yes, Amanda.

Bernard looks at Sara with a purposeful stare. Sara knows she has to take Jack’s mind off Amanda. She needs Jack to focus on her and the missions ahead.

Jack morphs into the Russian President. He is sitting in a cabinet meeting listening to his Chief of Staff demanding they proceed with operation Stalingrad.

Mr. President with your approval we will precede immediately. Which option do you prefer Mr. President, A or B?

Jack is speechless and doesn`t know how to answer. Immediately the Chief of Staff calls on security to arrest Jack Sanders. Jack morphs immediately back to Langley. He finds himself back in the same room he left, with a full crew waiting on standby.

Bernard, they caught me out. They knew it was me. I`m losing my edge.

Jack what happened?

I couldn`t answer the Chief of Staff’s question. I found myself in a cabinet meeting. The Chief of Staff said something about carrying out operation Stalingrad. They asked me which option I preferred and I couldn`t answer the question. I panicked and fled."

Then they know we are onto them.

Sara if they know we are onto them, then we are in trouble.

Yes, sir we are, the Russians will up the ante immediately in retaliation.

Let me run this up to the President.

Jack let’s take a break. My treat.

Sure, Sara let’s go. Bernard, do you want to join us?

No Jack you two go ahead. I`ll call you as soon as the Oval Office responds.

They head down to the restaurant in the CIA Building. Jack is still tense after the Russians discovered who he is.

I feel very uncomfortable about what just happened. I mean how did the Russians discover me so damn fast? It makes me feel nervous and I have never been nervous before on a mission.

It is surreal or maybe just coincidence. I mean they did ask you the question, right? How were you supposed to know the answer?

True Sara you`re right. I guess I`m over reacting.

Jack, I know about Amanda, and I know you are still hurting. But I also know you need to move on and enjoy life. Amanda would have wanted that.

I guess you are right Sara. I haven`t dated a woman in two years. I`ve forgotten how.

Well Jack you and I are going out tonight on a date.

Jack looks at her with surprise.

Okay Sara a date it is. Dinner at Marcels tonight! My treat.

Jack dials Marcels and books a table for two.

2401 Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest. I`ll pick you up at around 7:00pm?

Why thank you Jack. I am looking forward to it.

Sara has a wide smile on her face as she puts her hand on Jacks. Sara`s mobile rings.

Bernard what`s happening?

Sara the President wants Jack to go back to Russia. We have to find out what operation Stalingrad is?

We`ll be right up Bernard.

Jack, the President has requested you head back to Russia to find out about operation Stalingrad?

Let’s do it.

Sara holds Jack’s hand tight.

Jack be careful? Our dinner date will keep until you get back.

Don`t worry Sara. I’m Teflon. I`ll be fine.

They head back upstairs to the operation room.

Jack, I need the plan for operation Stalingrad. It could save countless lives Jack, so let’s beat the Russians at their own game.

I understand Bernard. I`m ready.

With that Jack is gone. He appears in a dimly lit room at the Kremlin. He scans the entire room. He speaks into the receiver buried deep into his ear.

This place is very quiet. I feel like I’m being watched but no-one is here in the office.

Jack, its Bernard, just stay focused. The sooner you get the information the quicker you can get the hell out of there.

Roger that Bernard.

Just as Jack had stopped talking the office door burst open with the Russian Secret Service, screaming for the President to hit the floor. Shots are fired and Jack is hit twice. Once in the thigh, and one shot grazes his stomach. Jack morphs immediately. He returns to Langley’s control room and collapses on the floor, blood everywhere. Sara screams. Bernard immediately calls emergency services. Bernard puts his face close to Jacks.

What the hell happened partner?

Jack is half conscious and whispers into Bernard’s ear.

They knew it was me Bernard, they knew.

Bernard knew straight away they had a Russian informant on the inside.

Jack you will be okay, no major arteries hit. The Paramedics are on the way. Hang in there buddy.

Jack manages a smile. Just like old times Bernard.

Yeah Jack, just like old times.

Memorial Hospital, Langley

It has been 10 hours and Jack is out of surgery and resting in a private room. Police officers guard his room. Bernard sits by Jack’s bed with his head in his hands. Sara walks into the room.

Bernard any change?

Not yet Sara. The Doctors say he`ll be able to talk tomorrow morning. They have him doped up at the moment.

How did they know? I mean the Russians; how did they know?

Insider leak? Has to be? I know Jack will be okay, but what worries me is they knew he was coming and secondly what are they planning? We know about the possible Gas and Oil shut down, but what else are they up to?"

What do you want me to do Bernard?

Starting immediately, we run a check on all computers, landlines, mobile phones, iPad, and every other electronic equipment that is used for the agency. I doubt we`ll find anything but it`s worth the try. Only twelve people knew our operation apart from the Presidents Team.

Does the President know what happened to Jack?

He does. The Secret Service is conducting an internal sweep for any leaks.

Bernard, I’m heading back to the office to get a team together to hit this fast and hard.

Just make sure you do this quietly and covert. If we do have a mole, they could run. The Russians will know Jack is in Hospital. Sara! I just had a thought. Let’s say Jack Sanders was killed while conducting a mission. We`ll hold a full-fledged funeral to make it authentic. Maybe, just maybe we can convince the Russians he`s dead. Then we can use Jack covertly once more and they will never know. But first conduct the sweep and find this bastard.

Roger that Bernard, and by the way that is a brilliant idea. Will you let the President know?

I will one on one, so no one else knows?

Perfect. Should Jack wake, please let him know I’ll be back in the morning first thing?

I will Sara, you can count on it.

Undisclosed Moscow Hospital

Russian President Krakov lies in the hospital recovering from the gunshot wounds. By his bedside are Dimitri Ruminov (Prime Minister), Ivan Krakov (Minister of the Interior).

The President understood the risk and wanted this in order to stop Jack Sanders, Dimitri.

Yes, but what a sacrifice for Mother Russia. We will tell him when he wakes that he stopped Jack Sanders, and we can continue with Operation Stalingrad Ivan.

Our informant will be making contact in 1 hour. We shall find out where Sanders is?

Yes, your informant has been most useful. If the Americans suspect anything get him out immediately?

Yes, Dimitri, we have an extraction plan in place".

You know Dimitri I have also had encounters with Sanders two years ago. He caused us all sorts of problems including infiltrating the Chinese. Now we know how to detect him he is an easy target.

He needs to be terminated once and for all. Then we can teach the Americans a lesson they will never forget. Ivan we continue to convene for Operation Stalingrad as scheduled tomorrow. We will keep the President up dated when he wakes up.

Understood. Dimitri the President`s wife is outside wanting to see him. We should step outside and let her see her hero. Our President?

Dimitri and Ivan carry on the conversation outside with new found enthusiasm. Ivan’s mobile rings.

Comrade let me take this, it`s our informer. Yes!

Jack Sanders didn`t make it. He is announced dead at 2:35am EST this morning. Your troubles are over Comrade.

I want proof he is dead. Call me when you have it. Oh by the way, good work comrade!"

The phone clicks off and Ivan looks around at Dimitri with a brood smile.

Our problems are over Dimitri. Sanders is dead.

Are you sure? If this is true, then we are in a better position than we previously thought.

I have asked our informant for proof. Until we receive it I suggest we keep this quiet?

I agree.

Memorial Hospital, Langley

Jack starts to wake. He slowly opens his eyes. He focuses on the roof until he hears a voice he is familiar with.

Jack. Jack. It`s me Sara. Thank God you are okay.

Sara, what the hell happened?

You don`t remember Jack? You were shot on a mission posing as the Russian President.

Okay I remember now. I feel like crap Sara.

They have you drugged up Jack. I am surprised you feel anything?

Thank you for being here. Has Bernard been here?

He was here last night. Jack, the Russians knew you were coming. We have an inside informant.

Son of a bitch. I knew something wasn`t right. I just knew it!

Yeah, well that’s not all Jack. Bernard is announcing that you died. Didn`t recover from the operation. It will give you time to heal and let the Russians think they killed you. When the time is right Jack you`ll be able to slip back without anyone knowing. But that will be further down the track. You need to mend. Doctors say twelve to fifteen weeks if your body responds to the new healing treatment.

Fifteen weeks! Man, I’ll go crazy!

Well Jack, I’ll just have to make sure you don`t.

Kremlin

Operation Stalingrad is about to be launched. With Jack Sanders gone the Russians believe they will now proceed unimpeded to teach the Americans not to meddle in Russian affairs and show them who is the true Superpower.

Chapter two

Brinkmanship

Operation Stalingrad is counting down to launch time. Twenty-four hours and the world will know Russia’s strength and dominance. No longer will she live under America`s shadow. No matter what the consequences.

Hospital Moscow

Mr. President it is good to see you awake. How do you feel?

Dimitri, I feel weak but determined to see our plans through.

Well Mr. President our plans have gone better than we expected. After you took the bullets from our expert marksman, we found out after Sanders was rushed to the hospital and that he passed away. He didn`t survive the operation.

Is this true?

Yes Mr. President, my inside source told me directly after you were admitted into hospital.

Then I am feeling better already Dimitri. Our plans are on target, and we are ready to shut down Europe.

Then we launch Stalingrad in less than 24 hours. What about the missiles?

We are preparing them as we speak. They are being loaded onto a ship at port Vladivostok.

Then we will see US President Doug Waters plead for forgiveness, and we will laugh in their faces.
