    1Chapter 1

Friends don’t stab friends in the back! Friends don’t try to take what doesn’t belong to them from friends! Then you pour whisky down his throat hopin’ that someday ya could take advantage of him. Well, those days are over! Travis was furious, his vein stuck out the side of his neck, staring at Burt into his beady eyes. Brody and Clem stood quietly, shocked. Their eyes were big as silver dollars. Your greed and whisky killed your friend, John, and ruined Lil’s family, mentally and physically. I’m glad you’re movin’! Brody, what is the narrow-minded traitor sellin’?

    Thousand acres, rundown house!

    How much? demanded Travis.

He needs two hundred dollars to get out of town, responded Brody, looking at Clem.

Brody, I’ll give him one hundred dollars, now! Travis never took his eye’s off Burt.

    I’ll take it! Burt muttered.

Shut up! I ain’t talkin’ to ya! I ain’t finished yet! Travis gave Brody one hundred dollars cash on the barrel head and reached into his shirt pocket and pulled out a small gold nugget. Burt looked at the gold nugget with interest. Brody, how much is this? Travis handed Brody the nugget.

Well, let’s see. You got one hundred dollars, Travis. Do you want to cash it in?

No! Brody handed the gold nugget back to Travis who then held it up in Burt’s face. Greed! Have ya ever seen a prettier site? Have ya ever seen a man shot in the back and come out the size of your fist? I have, his name was John Stamper, your best friend! This is what ya wanted the whole time!

Travis quickly slapped the gold nugget down on the counter. Crack! Everyone was startled and flinched. The reason I’m buyin’ your land is that I don’t want any neighbor like ya livin’ next to Lil and her two boys cause I don’t want ya to come back and try to get her land. I secured the land in Lil’s, Newt’s, and Cody’s names. You’ll never get it, and if ya ever say anythin’ to Lil or step one foot on her property, I will shoot ya!

    Burt was sweating, But I . . .

Shut up! I ain’t finished, yet! Travis picked up the gold nugget and again held it in Burt’s face, This is for ya, don’t cash it in. The next time ya take a shot of whisky or try to cheat someone out of a nickel, I want ya to take this gold nugget out of your pocket, look at it, and remember your best friend John who ya shot in the back! Travis shoved the gold nugget into Burt’s vest pocket. You make me sick! Now, get out of my sight! demanded Travis.

They all watched Burt walk to the door and open it.

Hey! Travis glared, Burt looked back. Have a nice day. Enjoy your trip. Remember John every time ya take a shot of whisky! sneered Travis.

Burt walked out and closed the door.

Clem put his hand on Travis’ shoulder. Boy, I’m sure glad you’re my friend. Nobody has ever stood up or talked to Burt that way! smiled Clem.

Yeah, I’m glad you set him straight, Travis. smiled Brody. He would come into town and act like he owned it! Good riddance, we don’t need people like that here in our town! Well, Travis, you’re the proud owner of the old Collins place. Good luck! smiled Brody. Just sign right here." Clem stood there and watched Travis sign the Deed and smiled.

Thanks, Brody, I got some more gold I want to cash in.

    Alright, let’s take a look!

Travis pulled out all the gold Cody collected for the past two months. Clem, I’m sorry I blew up like that but them kinda people irritate me to no end.

I know what ya mean. Burt got what was coming to him and I’m glad you said it!

Well, Travis, it looks like you got twenty thousand dollars here.

Brody, can ya put ten thousand in each of the boys’ accounts?

    Sure can!

Travis reached into his saddlebag and pulled out several big gold nuggets that he found in the old, rusty, metal can and handed them to Brody.

Boy, Travis, I’m sure glad you got his gold and not Burt, smiled Brody.

    Me, too! added Clem, smiling.

Now Lil and our two sons will never go hungry, ever again! smiled Travis.

Looks like you got another thirty thousand dollars, Travis! You’re the richest man in the whole territory around here.

Brody, it’s not mine, it’s Lil’s. Can I get one thousand dollars, one thousand into Miss Carrie’s school budget, and . . .

Clem was excited. Man! Travis, you’re gonna make Miss Carrie, very, very happy!

. . . And do ya think the town will want The Rev. to stay?

Yes, most definitely, why? asked Clem.

I come here to put in a good word for The Rev. and Margret.

It wouldn’t hurt! Travis, no matter what you say, it would help. He’s one of us now! remarked Clem with a big grin.

Alright, just between us three, I want to build The Rev. a place to worship and a place to live.

That would be fantastic, Travis! smiled Clem.

And I could look for places for sale around here, so they can build.

Thanks, Brody, but I don’t want the townspeople to know cause they might slack off and not help support The Rev.

You got a deal, Travis! replied Clem. They all shook hands in agreement. I can’t wait to see what happens at the meeting, smiled Clem. Travis, you’re in charge. You take control and have that building built. It will be the best thing the town has done in a long time! Clem was eager.

Alright. Brody put two thousand in The Rev.’s buildin’ fund. If ya need anymore, let me know, and the rest in Lil’s account.

You got it, Travis! You’re the best guy I ever met in my whole life. I’m proud to be one of your friends, smiled Brody.

Travis, are you sure you’re human! laughed Clem, patting him on the back.

Sometimes I wonder if’n I’m a durn fool! They all laughed.

Here’s your thousand and we’re looking forward to the meeting.

Thanks, Brody. Thanks, Clem! I’ll see you guys a little later. Travis shook their hands and walked out the Land Office door headed towards the General Store. He said his hello’s and howdy’s and greeted the townspeople along the way and met The Rev.

Hey, Travis! I been looking for you. Lil and Margret are getting ready. Lil wants to know what’s taking you so long to get the boys new britches!

    I’m headed there now!

Well, what took you so long? asked The Rev., he was curious. Travis smiled.

I bought the old Collins place! Two hundred dollars and gave Burt the what-for!

Oh, my goodness! You stole it! laughed The Rev.

No, I paid Brody two hundred dollars, what Burt wanted. They both grinned.

Here we are, let’s go in.

Travis reached up and rang the little brass bell above the door as he walked in.

Travis, my friend, how ya doing?

Good, Jed! smiled Travis, and The Rev. nodded.

I see you met up with The Rev. Boy, he was mighty powerful preaching yesterday. Had everyone crying, even old lady Kirby! They all chuckled.

That mighty power came from The Good Lord above! smiled The Rev.

Amen, Rev. Travis, take a look at this jacket! Jed quickly looked around and showed Travis the black jacket.

That looks mighty fine, Jed! smiled Travis.

Jed looked around to see if Ruth was watching, he pointed, Look in the pocket! Travis took out the little box that contained the two wedding rings and looked at them and admired them both.

Oh, my, that’s a big diamond! Beautiful! That’s perfect, Jed! Just what The Rev. ordered! chuckled Travis. The Rev. smiled and patted Travis on the shoulder.

Travis, I got to thinking. Why would you dress up and not your, huh, Newt and Cody? So I found these two jackets to fit your boys! Jed smiled.

Good thinkin’, Jed! I’ll take them. They match mine! Thanks, Jed! smiled Travis. Oh! And two bouquets of flowers. That one, blue and white, and . . . and . . . Travis mumbled.

The yellow and white! smiled The Rev. And two boutonnieres – one blue, one yellow!

    Thanks, Rev., I never . . .

    I know! laughed The Rev.

Travis, that will be twenty-four dollars and fourteen cents, smiled Jed.

Travis handed Jed the money. Jed, could you put these flowers on the school desk before the meetin’?

Sure can, Travis! This is going to be exciting, the meeting and all, smiled Jed.

I’ll be back to get my supplies later, Jed.

    I’ll be here! smiled Jed.

Thanks, Jed! Oh, about forgot, britches! I need two for Newt and Cody. Boy, I don’t know where my head’s at, about forgot my boys’ britches! Travis shook his head.

In the clouds! laughed The Rev.

Here they are, Travis, two pairs of boys’ britches. That’s another twenty cents!

    "Thanks, Jed!

Come on, let’s go! barked The Rev. Before we both end up in the dog house! They both laughed.

Thanks, Jed! See ya at the meetin’!

Bye, you guys, and good luck! smiled Jed as The Rev. and Travis walked out the door.

Travis gave the britches to The Rev. Rev., would ya kindly take these britches to Lil? I got one more stop to make.

The Rev. shook his head. Boy, you better make it snappy, or else! he yelled as Travis ran across the dirt street to Mrs.Kirby’s Eatery. Travis walked in and walked up to her. She turned and smiled.

It’s about time our local hero came in to see me. She smiled. Travis, what can I get you, a hug maybe? Travis smiled and hugged her.

Mrs. Kirby, can I have a table for six in about a half hour for lunch?

Why sure, Travis, anything for my friend.

Travis handed her five dollars and smiled, Keep the change!

Oh, my, big spender! She smiled.

Mrs. Kirby, after the meetin’ tonight, I would like to buy everyone’s supper. It’s gonna be real special, with The Rev. and all, but don’t tell anyone I did it!

My goodness, Travis. It must be special!

Now, how much would that cost me?

Well, if thirty people plus show up, that’s quite a handful, a lot of business for me, I love it! Say, about fifteen dollars should cover it! smiled Mrs. Kirby. Travis handed her a twenty-dollar gold piece.

Keep the rest! You’re a lifesaver! Travis hugged her and gave her a kiss on the cheek and quickly walked out the door and ran up the dirt street. Lil was waiting in the doorway of their room with her hands on her hips.

Travis! My goodness, aren’t you going to spend time with me and the boys? she scowled.

Yeah, Lil, the rest of the day, I promise. I had business to take care of first. He kissed her. I was thinkin’.

Don’t say it! she scowled, Travis chuckled.

I was thinkin’, he smiled, after lunch we could go to the General Store and look around and maybe do some shoppin’ for ya! He winked and smiled.

Uh-hum! Trying to smooth things over, aren’t you? Lil scowled.

Yeah! But look! I got this jacket for me for the meetin’, cause you’re wearin’ your new dress ya made, and figured the boys need to look sharp, too! So I got them one to match mine. Sorry, Lil, my mind, has been goin’ lickety-split in circles tryin’ to outrun a big bull breathin’ down my neck. I need to slow down! Lil looked him in the eye.

    Yes, you do! she scowled.

Travis walked over to her and gave her a kiss . . . I’m sorry! and hugged her. You’re beautiful and I love ya! I didn’t want to look like a saddle bum standin’ next to you at the meetin’. I’m proud of ya, Lil. She kissed him. But right now I got to get my bath cause I got us a table at the Eatery in a half hour! He smiled.

Alright, take your bath! But, the rest of the day belongs to me! she scowled. Travis smiled.

I promise! Travis undressed and crawled into a tub of hot water. O-o-oh! This is so relaxin’!

Don’t dilly-dally, you don’t have much time! Lil ordered.

Lil, I got somethin’ to tell ya!

Lil walked around the partition, What?

I ran into Burt Collins at the Land Office and gave him a piece of my mind and never step one foot on your land again! Or I’ll shoot him!

Lil was shocked and knelt down beside the tub. You did that, for me? She teared.

Yep, and the boys. He’s broke. I bought his land, over one thousand acres.

My land! You did what? Why?

I told him I’d buy it for two hundred dollars to get him out of town and never come back! Cause I didn’t want neighbors like him around ya and the boys.

Lil gave Travis a kiss and smiled. You stole his land! She chuckled.

Nope! I paid Brody just what Burt asked for – two hundred dollars to leave town! smiled Travis. Someday, I’ll make use of the land, or, when ya kick me out, I’ll have a place to go! He chuckled.

Travis! You shouldn’t talk like that!

    I’m just foolin’! Travis laughed.

I’d never do that to the man I love! She kissed him.

Hand me that towel! Travis stood up.

    Travis!! Couldn’t you wait?

Wait for what? Was someone watchin’ or lookin’ thru the window? He smiled.

Yes, me! But I won’t tell nobody! laughed Lil. She hugged and kissed his naked body. You just wait until tonight! as she watched him dress and put on his new jacket, and he watched her put on her new dress.

Lil, ya look beautiful with or without your new dress! He smiled, she giggled.

Travis, you look mighty handsome yourself. She smiled. With or without your . . .

Thanks, Lil! Travis gave her a kiss and a hug. Lil fixed his black ribbon bow-tie.

    I love you, Travis!

I love ya, Lil. Let’s get our two sons.

Pa! Ya and Ma look like a king and a queen! Ma, you’re beautiful!

Thanks, Newt. Here, try on this new jacket. She smiled.

Wow! It’s the same color as Pa’s!

Cody, here’s one for you, too!

Oh, boy! Thanks, Ma. Now we all look the same! smiled Cody. Lil helped Cody put on his new black jacket and black ribbon bow-tie.

They’re just like your pa’s! Boy, you three look sharp and mighty handsome! I’m glad I’m with you guys!

    Thanks, Ma!

Thanks, Lil! Travis kissed her. They all smiled.

They all walked down the stairs, Roy smiled. The Rev. and Margret were waiting in the lobby and saw Lil and Travis and the boys.

Lil, your dress is just beautiful! Did you buy it? Where? And how much? asked Margret. Lil smiled and giggled.

    No, I made it!

You’re kidding me! Margret was amazed.

No, Travis bought the material for me from Ruth at the General Store.

Well, after lunch we’ll have to go see! They both smiled and giggled.

Yes, that would be great. Maybe we could find some more, smiled Lil.

Lil and Margret, and the boys with Moonlite, walked in front of Travis and The Rev. down the dirt street towards Mrs. Kirby’s Eatery. The townspeople commented on how beautiful they all looked and how handsome the boys looked, and they smiled and waved.

    Rev., I got a problem!

What? as he looked at Travis.

I’m worried about Newt. He’s drivin’ himself crazy, he whispered, shootin’ that man.

About what? Oh, my Lord! That’s an awful burden, Travis, for a young boy!

    He’s got a guilty conscience.

The best way is to talk to him about it.

I have, Rev., but it’s still on his mind!

Well, when he feels ready to talk more, let him talk. Let him get it out and off his chest! Travis, it could be anywhere at anytime, between now or twenty years from now! The Rev. was concerned.

Oh, Rev.! He’ll go crazy by then!

Well, we got to let The Good Lord handle it. You can’t keep reminding him of it or he’ll never forget!

Oh, no! Rev., that’s the last thin’ I want to do!

Mrs. Kirby opened the door for Lil and Margret. Boy, don’t you two ladies look beautiful and your boys are just darlings. I’m glad you’re doing a lot better, Lil, thanks to my hero! She smiled.

Thanks, Mrs. Kirby! replied Lil with a smile as the women walked out of the way.

And look at these two handsome gentlemen. I wonder who they’re with?

Thanks, Mrs. Kirby! added The Rev. with a kiss on the cheek. And you look just as lovely! Mrs. Kirby blushed as they all walked back and sat down at The Rev.’s favorite table. Mrs. Kirby served them her lunch special.

Only the best for the best!

Thanks, Mrs. Kirby. They all smiled.

The Rev. blessed the food and the townspeople and for a good outcome on the meeting.

Cody asked, Pa, can Moonlite have a bite of my ham? His eyes said yes.

    Alright, just a little piece.

Cody ran to the door and gave Moonlite a piece of ham. She was tied up to the hitching rail. Several people stopped to pet the wolf pup and marveled at her beautiful colored fur.

They all finished eating and left the Eatery, heading for the General Store.

Travis! Oh, Travis! Miss Carrie was walking down the street towards them. How is my favorite hero? She smiled.

Fine. Miss Carrie, I would like ya to meet Lil.

Mrs. Lil Stamper! I’ve heard so much about you, all good, of course. You’re beautiful. No wonder Travis is so sweet on you! Miss Carrie smiled, Lil blushed.

Thanks, Miss Carrie. And these two special boys are Newt and Cody. They smiled.

Hi! Boys, don’t you two look handsome, just like your pa, and I’m glad your pa has taken interest in your schooling. She gave the boys a hug.

Boy, you sure do smell good, said Cody. Miss Carrie chuckled and looked at Lil.

Yeah, and Pa says you’re pretty! And ya sure are pretty, Miss Carrie, remarked Newt. Travis was embarrassed, the rest laughed.

Thank you, Newt and Cody. I get that a lot from the boys at school. Their fathers think that will get them a better grade in school. It doesn’t work that way! She smiled at Travis.

It wasn’t me, Miss Carrie! Travis looked surprised. They all laughed.

Travis, you’re a month late! scowled Miss Carrie. Travis was backed into a corner by a pretty schoolmarm.

    Well . . . I . . . I . . .

That’s alright, Travis. I know you can’t make it into town that often, so I got you some new learning books and gave them to Jed to put with your supplies.

Thanks, Miss Carrie! replied Travis, Lil smiled.

You boys are doing a wonderful job on your schooling. She smiled.

Thanks, Miss Carrie! Newt smiled. Miss Carrie, do you have any cowboy songbooks?

Yes, I do. I’m impressed, Newt! Most boys hate music, say it’s for girls. Do you sing?

    Yeah, our Pa taught us.

Miss Carrie put her hand on Travis’ arm, Lil noticed. You’re a special pa. So, Newt, what can you sing? smiled Miss Carrie.

Newt looked at his pa. They started to tap their boots on the ground. Travis started. Ridin’, ropin’ . . .

Cody said, Move ’um up, move ’um out . . .

Newt started, Rollin’, rollin’, rollin’ rawh-ide! Ridin’, ropin’, rustlin’, keep those doggies movin’, rawh ide! No matter where yer standin’, rope that steer and brand ’um and keep your six gun close to your side, rollin’ rollin’, rollin’, rawh-ide!

That was just beautiful! smiled Miss Carrie. All the people that heard them clapped. Travis, you made me so happy I’m going to give your boys, Newt and Cody, an ‘E’ in music. Miss Carrie looked at the boys. An ‘E’ is for Excellent. The boys were excited and gave Miss Carrie a hug.

    Thanks, Miss Carrie!

Boys, I’m going to give your pa an ‘E’, Miss Carrie looked at Travis and Lil, for being a wonderful pa and teacher! Travis, did you hear The Rev. is going to marry me and Rusty in a few days? She smiled.

Well, congratulations! But I’m sorry we won’t be able to stay for your weddin’!

I understand. You made up for it with your generous donation! Thanks! Miss Carrie got up on her tip-toes and gave Travis a kiss on the cheek. Lil cleared her throat! Miss Carrie said her goodbyes. Lil scowled at Travis.

    What donation?

I gave Miss Carrie one thousand dollars for her school budget.

The Rev. was moved. He put his hand on Travis’ shoulder. May God bless you, Travis! He teared.

    Thanks, Rev.! Travis smiled.

So, that’s why the boys got new books! You been giving her donations! Lil smiled. I’m so proud of you! I love you! Lil gave Travis a hug and a kiss. They all smiled and walked to the General Store.

    Chapter 2

    TOWN MEETING

They all were standing outside the General Store. Lil looked at Margret, Come on, Margret. Let’s go in and look around and see what we can find. I’m so excited! Maybe you can show me how to shop and get a good bargain! Lil smiled.

You bet I will! They both giggled as they walked into the General Store. The Rev. and boys followed them in.

Well, look! It’s Lil Stamper! shrieked Ruth with a big smile. And you look so beautiful in that dress. Ruth gave Lil a hug.

Thanks, Ruth, thanks for helping Travis pick out the material. I just love it, smiled Lil, and, Ruth, thanks for the necessities I needed and the special brew. It was heaven-sent. I’d like to get some more! She smiled.

Oh, Lil, you’re such a darling! I’ll help you, whatever you need anytime. I’ll even make you up a special package, just for you, every time Travis comes to town!

Oh, Ruth, that would be wonderful. You’re a lifesaver, only you would know! Thanks!

Why don’t you ladies look around for a bit? I’ll be back shortly! She smiled.

Travis saw Harry walking up the dirt street and stayed outside.

Harry, my ol friend! Travis smiled.

Travis! They both hugged each other. Travis, this is my wife, Sadie.

Sadie stood there and smiled. Travis was surprised she was just as big as Harry, just a few inches shorter than Harry, but just as wide and stocky.

Hi, Travis! She smiled. I’ve always wanted to meet you. Harry’s told me so much about ya. You’re my special hero. Ya made our lives so much better! Sadie stepped in closer to Travis and gave him a bear hug. Travis kissed her on the cheek.

Thanks, Sadie! Ya got yourself one good man and my real good friend. Ya ought to be proud. They all smiled. Hey, Sadie, Lil’s inside the General Store. I know she would like to see ya.

She is? Oh, boy! I would like to meet her, too! I hear she’s a little sweetheart! Sadie smiled and walked into the General Store.

Oh! Look, it’s Sadie! Ruth hollered and ran over to hug her. Lil, look, this is Harry’s wife! Lil was surprised to see such a big woman.

Oh, my goodness! Lil teared up. I’ve always been wanting to meet you. They both hugged. Sadie, thank you for letting Harry stay and help me. He’s such a good man and a true friend. I don’t know what I would of done without his help! teared Lil.

So, you’re the ‘pretty little nursemaid’ Harry kept talking about. Lil, Harry has such a big heart for helpin’ his friend. No wonder Harry didn’t want to leave and come home. She smiled, Lil blushed. I’m glad he could help, but more importantly is Harry found a true friend. Ya got a good man, Lil, and Travis has surely been good to us, thanks! Lil hugged Sadie and talked women talk.

Harry and Travis were still outside the General Store.

Harry, how’s work been for ya?

Kinda slow, Travis, but thanks to ya, we’re doin’ fine.

Ya want some more work, Harry?

Sure do! I ain’t that old yet! He grumbled.

I bought the old Collins place, one thousand acres, two hundred dollars! Travis grinned. Harry laughed.

Man, oh, man! That’s dirt road robbery! I bet you’re glad he’s gone.

Yep! All Burt asked for was two hundred dollars to leave town. So I paid it and told him I didn’t want to see his face again!

    Good for ya! Harry smiled.

Not now, but maybe later, we can fix the place up!

Yeah, that would be great! Maybe next spring sometime, smiled Harry.

Yeah, sounds good, Harry. Would ya be willin’ to build a place for The Rev., start in the next week or so? Harry got excited.

Ya bet! Yep, I would! Travis, you’re some kinda friend! shaking Travis’ hand.

Harry, I don’t know all the details yet, but I’ll know more at the meetin’.

I’ll be there, Travis! Harry smiled.

Harry, Travis looked around, I got a real big surprise for Lil after the meetin’.

Yeah, what? Harry was eager to find out.

Harry, I would like ya to be my Best Man!

Harry teared up and was shocked. Ya mean it! Travis, I’m so happy for ya! Harry gave Travis a big bear hug. I would love to, but, Travis, ya need to think more about it. Travis looked confused. I think, which is dangerous ya know! They both chuckled. I think, ya already got your Best Man! Harry smiled.

    I do? replied Travis.

Yep! He’s your right-hand man! Doggone it! It if weren’t for Newt . . .

Yep! You’re right, Harry! Travis smiled. Thanks, Harry! Come on, let’s go in!

Harry! Lil yelled and ran over to him and gave him a hug and a kiss on the cheek. I missed you!

I missed ya, too, Lil! But, don’t let my wife find out!

They all laughed and had a great time shopping around. Jed gave the boys a piece of hard-sucking candy.

Newt, look at these ropes. Pick ya out a nice lasso.

Ya mean it, Pa? shrieked Newt.

Yep! Can’t rope a steer if ya don’t have a rope, smiled Travis.

Thanks, Pa! smiled Newt. Newt quickly looked at the new lassos Jed had in stock and picked out one. Pa, I like this one! Newt grinned.

Good choice. Now you’re a cowboy! They both smiled. Cody, do ya see anythin’ ya like?

Not yet, Pa! I’m still lookin’.

Travis saw Lil admiring a beautiful saddle. Jed, Travis whispered, See that saddle Lil’s lookin’ at?

Yeah, it’s a beaut, fancy design, woman’s riding saddle! Jed smiled.

I’d like to get it for Lil. . . . Jed smiled. . . . Can ya put it in with our supplies so Lil can’t see it until we get home?

Sure can, Travis. Jed chuckled. Boy she’ll be surprised!

Travis smiled and walked over to Lil. He whispered in her ear, Boy, that saddle is almost as beautiful as ya are! Travis smiled.

Thanks, Travis! Lil smiled and gave him a quick kiss. I think it’s just beautiful, but I don’t need it! I ride bareback! She winked and smiled.

Oh, I get it! You’re playing a mind game with me! whispered Travis, she smiled. Travis looked at the price tag on the saddle. Ouch, ouch! They both laughed.

The Rev. and Margret got ready to leave and said their goodbyes.

Margret, thank you so much for your help. You made this such a wonderful experience for me. Lil smiled and hugged her.

You’re welcome, Lil, anything to help! The Rev. and Margret went back to the Rooming House for a nap before the meeting.

Lil hugged Sadie and Harry as they left to take a walk around town. Lil picked out some more material with Ruth. Newt was standing there daydreaming. Travis walked up to him and whispered in his ear.

Son, why don’t ya pick out somethin’ for your ma for her birthday. Newt got excited. But don’t let her see ya. It’s a surprise.

Alright, Pa! whispered Newt. I know what she wants. I saw her pick somethin’ up. She liked it!

Have Cody pick out somethin’, too!

    "Alright, Pa!

Have Jed wrap them up so your ma can’t see them!

    Alright, Pa! Newt smiled.

Travis walked over to Jed, standing behind the counter.

Travis, you look like a famous person and the town’s hero. Jed smiled.

Thanks, Jed! I really do like this western jacket ya picked out for me. It sure will come in handy for tonight.

Jed saw Newt acting kinda shady and suspicious. Travis! What’s your boy up to?

Travis looked. Oh, Jed, he’s gettin’ Lil a birthday present and doesn’t want his ma to see it.

Oh, sometimes when boys act like that they start to run for the door! They both chuckled.

Newt walked up to the counter and whispered, Pa, look! Newt held up his present.

    That’s great, Newt!

    Ain’t that design pretty, Pa?

    Yep, just like your ma!

Here, Newt, let me take that and wrap it for you.

    Thanks, Mr. Jed.

    Lil’s gonna love it!

Newt, did your brother find anythin’? asked Travis.

    No, he’s still lookin’ around!

Cody was standing by the saddle, looking at leather goods and then looking at the saddle. His little head was going back and forth. Travis saw him.

Jed, I think my son needs a little help. I’m gonna go over so he don’t spoil the surprise.

Yeah! Before he hurts his neck! Jed chuckled and shook his head.

Travis chuckled and walked over to Cody. He bent down and whispered, Son, what ya thinkin’?

Cody whispered, Pa, Ma’s got a horse, but . . . Cody walked over to the leather goods and pointed.

Travis walked over beside him and whispered, Which one?

Cody whispered, The one that looks like that saddle.

This one? Travis pointed. Cody smiled and nodded his head yes. Good choice, Son! Travis took it off the rack, looking over at Lil to see if she was looking. Travis whispered, Here, take this to Jed. Don’t let your ma see it!

Cody nodded and comically started to walk towards Jed sideways, with his back towards his ma, side-stepping. Jed chuckled. Travis thought it was too obvious and rushed up next to Cody, walking beside him to shield him from Lil. Jed almost laughed out loud.

Here, Cody, let me put those in a bag for ya! Jed and Travis both chuckled.

    Thanks, Mr. Jed!

Travis reached into his pocket. Cody, don’t I owe ya two pennies?

    Yeah, Pa!

    Here’s your two pennies.

    Thanks, Pa. Cody smiled.

Newt, here’s a penny for ya, too!

    Thanks, Pa.

Now, let’s see what Jed has for a penny? smiled Travis.

How about some candy? giggled Cody.

    Yeah! added Newt, smiling.

    I got hard-sucking candy, all different flavors, a small bag for a penny. I got . . .

Yeah, I want that! smiled Cody. Jed handed Cody a small bag of candy. Cody handed Jed a penny. Jed smiled.

Well, thank you, Cody! It’s been nice doing business with you!

Cody stuck a piece of candy in his mouth, Thanks, Mr. Jed!

Newt, how about you? asked Jed.

Boy, that’s a tough one, Mr. Jed! Newt eyeballed all the candy Jed had in his candy jar. Between hard candy and licorice! His mouth watered.

Boy, Newt! That is a tough one! smiled Jed. How about you get the licorice and you can trade one with Cody!

Yeah! That would be great, Mr. Jed, thanks! Jed smiled, Newt handed Jed his penny. Nice doin’ business with ya, Mr. Jed! smiled Newt. Travis and Jed chuckled.

Lil held up some material for some more clothes she wanted to make for herself, one in each hand, and got Travis’ attention.

Travis . . . Travis, which one do you like?

The one in the middle! He smiled. Lil was confused until she realized she was in the middle.

Oh, you! She smiled. Which color do you like?

    Both!

Oh, you! She scowled. You’re no help!

Lil, get them both! He smiled.

    You mean it?

    Yeah!

Lil was thrilled. Travis walked over next to her and picked up a white cowboy hat with fancy feathers and put in on Lil’s head, Hey, it fits!

You’re going to mess up my hair.

Sorry! Travis handed the hat to Ruth. Lil will take the cowboy hat, too!

    Why? asked Lil.

Well, ya got a beautiful horse. Ya might as well have a beautiful hat. We are shoppin’, ya know! Travis smiled.

Lil smiled and giggled, Oh, alright! Ruth chuckled.

And while we’re at it, ya need a pair of nice riding’ pants, too! He smiled. Ruth, rustle up a pair for the beautiful cowgirl!

Thanks, Travis! Lil gave him a kiss.

Boy, Lil, you got yourself a real nice and sweet cowboy there! Ruth winked at Travis. They all smiled.

I know! Isn’t he wonderful? Lil smiled. Travis, I’m done, I’m all shopped out. I don’t need anything else! She smiled. Let’s go to the meeting. Lil walked towards the door.

Travis pointed to the toiletry kit and Ruth nodded her head and smiled, Good idea, Travis, as he walked towards the door.

Come on, boys. Time to go to the meetin’. Newt and Cody rushed to the door. Travis was close behind. Thanks, Jed! Thanks, Ruth! Travis smiled as he walked out the door. Boys, don’t eat all that candy. You’ll ruin your supper, then Mrs. Kirby will be upset cause ya didn’t finish your plate. Save some for tomorrow for the trip home.

Alright, Pa! They both smiled and stuck their bags of candy in their jacket pockets.

Pa, we don’t want to make Mrs. Kirby mad, cause she’s a good cooker. . . . Lil looked at Cody. . . . But you’re a better cooker, Ma! They all chuckled.

The townspeople were starting to gather outside in front of the Schoolhouse.

Look at all those people, Travis! And they’re all your friends! Lil was amazed.

Yeah, and I told ya they’re your friends, too!

The bell began to ring out at the school. Travis and Lil walked arm-in-arm to the Schoolhouse, greeting their friends and making their way to the front door. They walked inside. Travis saw Margret standing in the front. She was waving for them to come up front. The Rev. was sitting in a chair by Miss Carrie’s desk. Travis shook hands with his friends and they welcomed Lil and her two boys as they walked to the front and sat down beside Margret.

More people crowded in the one-room Schoolhouse. There was standing room only. All the chairs were full. A dull roar filled the room with everyone talking.

Clem walked to the front and stood by the desk. Alright, everybody, he yelled, quiet down! Hey! Everybody! Clem spoke in a loud voice, Let’s all quiet down! The crowded Schoolhouse became quiet. You all know by now why we are here. We all have to decide, tonight, if we want and need a preacher, as a town. Do we want The Rev. and his wife to stay and preach to us and become a valuable asset to our community, not only to preach The Good Book but to also give us good and healthy advice on our morals, to better ourselves and our town? And now, our good friend and local hero, Travis, would like to say a few words on The Rev.’s behalf. Travis, come on up! The floor is yours! The crowd clapped and cheered as Clem took a seat and Travis walked up front.

"I want to thank everybody for showin’ up and takin’ an interest in the future of your town. First of all, I’m not a hero! I’m just like any of ya that would of done the same thin’.

When I first met The Rev., he said ‘Son, you’re an answer to my prayers.’ I said ‘Rev., you’re an answer to my prayers and to a little boy. I got a world of hurt – a badly injured boy, a little boy cryin’ for his ma, their ma is missin’ and their pa gone. . . .’

Lil started to sob. Margret put her arm around Lil to console her.

. . . I asked The Rev. and his wife to stay and look after the boys while I went to look for the boys’ ma. I didn’t even know what she looked like. Travis looked at Lil and winked. "The little boy gave me a penny, called me ‘Pa’ and had faith in me to find his ma. He touched my heart.

"I only met The Rev. for about ten minutes, but I trusted him. A week or so later, Lil arrived home, safe, to her two sons. The Rev. and his wife, Margret, were there, too! Thanks to The Good Lord! They blessed Lil’s family. The Rev. told the boys and explained the whole situation to them about life and death, the way that only a preacher could explain to two little boys.

The Rev. and Margret refused to be paid. The Rev. said that seein’ a family back together was a joy to see, and an everlastin’ friendship was made, and I’m proud that The Rev. and his wife, Margret, are true friends and a blessin’ to me and my family. May The Good Lord Bless ya, Rev. and Margret! Thank you! The crowd wiped their eyes and clapped.

Lil stood up. Travis, I would like to say something. Travis nodded. All of you knew John. I thank you, again, for what you’ve done and your help! I was the other half of that world of hurt. Some of you may not of heard, I was beat up, beat down, and had so much hate. I had no willpower to keep on living. After Travis found me, I didn’t trust him. I called him a liar and a bounty hunter, out to make a dollar off me. Lil looked at Travis with tears in her eyes. "I’m sorry I ever said that, and I didn’t believe a word he said.

He was kind and polite. After little tidbits of information he gave me, I started to wonder why, then he told me. I soon realized the truth. I asked him who was watching my boys. I cried. Some of the women, teared up and started to cry.

Travis told me a reverend and his wife stopped by. I asked him if he knew them. ‘Nope! I don’t even know you, but I found you,’ he told me. After I returned home, my boys were fine with the help of The Rev. and Margret. They’re just such a blessing to me. I love them both dearly! Lil wiped her eyes with her hankie, sat down next to Margret, and hugged her. The Rev. sat patiently, wiping his eyes with his bandana.

The crowded one-room Schoolhouse clapped for Lil. Someone yelled, Good luck, Lil!

Is there anyone else? asked Travis.

Pa . . . Pa, can I say somethin’? asked Newt.

Travis quickly looked to The Rev. He motioned for Newt and nodded his head yes. Travis looked back at Newt, with fear and anticipating what Newt might
