The ice shelf was a strange place, even for Kynthia. Her kind rarely traveled along the frozen glacier, which yielded next to nothing in creatures to hunt. The rocky spindles that surfaced above the sea of ice were stone spires barren of any plant life. Leagues below the glacier, too far for anyone to reach by digging into the mantel, was the ocean. Kynthia had heard stories of the deep dark places and what horrors lurk there.

She had lost Crunk's trail a half a day's journey back. When they passed to the other side of Elder Mountain the clouds which were trapped by the stoic range were loosing their fluffy cargo. You're helping plenty, Lazarus. She attempted to soothe his bruised ego.

Why do I feel like you're making fun of me.

No, you really are helping, she reassured him with a chuckle. It was too easy to poke fun at the tinker, and she was going to have to watch her manners in the future.

Coming to a halt suddenly, Kynthia dropped the ropes that pulled the sled. Lazarus, unaware of the pause, continued to push the lump of inert equipment to no avail.

What is it? He asked, peeking over the heap of supplies.

She hushed him, I thought I heard something. The tinker was silent, watching her. He held his breath, waiting for her to give the all clear.

Putting her finger on what had made the subtle noise of drifting snow, ahead of them between the rocks, was difficult. She sniffed the air, but it drifted past them,
