The Heaven’s Blessing drifted silently above Pithilee, the ghost of a shadow pulled along by a conspiratorial breeze. With the engines completely cut, they slipped unseen over the dark streets and sleeping homes, the balloon above them blending in with the night sky. Ashtail moored the bobbing vessel to a solitary smoking chimney poking out of Veronica’s palatial mansion on a hill overlooking the city. The pirate lowered the rope over the side of the ship, and then he and his first mate dropped down onto the sloped roof.
The stealthy company had their pick of over sized skylights along the pitched structure. The Captain knelt, and forced one open. He lowered the rope into the light-less room below. With a grunt, he lifted his legs over the lip, and disappeared into the dark chamber below. Yara followed him without so much as a whisper.
Waiting above the furtive pair, leaning over the railing, and squinting into the din, was Callie Winters, understudy turned pirate wench. She wore a dark outfit, a simple tunic shirt and black pants. Beside her, Yureg, the ship’s task master, watched with a calm indifference to the magnitude of the heist they were embarking upon. The silver haired man was busy tying tiny metal ornaments to his beard.
Yara’s head poked over edge of their entry, giving Yureg a thumbs up, then she was gone into the darkness once again. Yureg produced a rope with a loop tied a few inches from the end. He helped Callie step into the makeshift seat. Then he lowered her into the shadowed portal. Yara was waiting to catch her, and with her mission etiquette prevailing Callie didn’t have to worry much about any unwanted advances.
They were in an empty dining hall, huge and ornate. An imposing table stretched from one end of the hall to the other. Large bowls of fruit were set at intervals along the furniture surrounding the dining fare. Shadows darted down the corridors surrounding the room from guttering lanterns left unattended. Around them was silence. It was too early for most of the servants to be awake. Dawn was still a few hours away, and they had plenty of time for mischief.
